This book has weight due to excellent British concern for paper and binding quality
By M. Gallegos
First, this book is manufactured to a high standard; it will last a very long time. I received a copy with a clear, book jacket cover, which protects the published book cover. This book has weight due to excellent British concern for paper and binding quality. From a point of view, as if it were a work of art, the publication is handsome. Pictorial representations are good; some being rather small but that due to lack of space: a reduction of size is required and thus forgivable. Line drawings of most things to have been built in the 1600s is a lost art. Today's computer based software generate construction drawings not of art but of precision and so, lack a certain élan probably unknown even to the drafters of the vessels of the 1600s who would never know computers. The depths of appreciation include the world of mathematics peculiar to the Naval Architect also calculated automatically by modern computed aided drafting. It was done long hand. My point is, if you don't know what a vessel's righting moment is, not to worry: your eye will scan for hours about these several vessel's sweet and fair lines. If a Naval Architect, your appreciation will be long. In between? This is a fascinating read with plenty of Appendices to answer questions and define meanings. It would be a waste of genius if this book were left on the coffee table, unread, unopened, unappreciated for it's fine publication construction, it's hand drawn art and beauty, and the science still in use in ship building. Any difficulty reading this book is well worth the effort to understand and gain a knowledge of the art and science of ship building from about 1750 to 1810.
