Wish I had liked it more.

Goodness, this book made me nuts. I did finish it, but was not fond at all. If you like characters who constantly fall into predicaments because of making bad choices, then you may like it very much. I do realize that not every book is written for every reader, and that has to be the case here.
First, Prudence has had two seasons. How can she still be considered a debutante?
deb·u·tante
ˈdebyəˌtänt/
noun
an upper-class young woman making her first appearance in fashionable society.
Second, she has reached the end of her patience. She is not married, has no prospects, and is pretty much blaming her sisters for their wild schemes for putting her on the shelf by virtue of the scandals they have both brought upon the family. She is incredibly whiny to begin with. And she keeps mentioning how she has been the good girl, always obeying the rules. So, after kissing Roan at some point, she mentions having kissed someone else. When would that have happened? She's been a wallflower because of her sisters since her come out!
Once she decides to step away from that role, by riding on a coach so she can keep her eyes on the gorgeous Roan, she never steps back into the good girl role. One mishap after another, brought about by her bad choices, and Roan's, too, mean that the scandals her sisters created might be considered pale compared to hers.
Roan is an American. He is in England to drag his sister back to her betrothed in New York. He is quite thrilled and flattered when he realizes Prudence has followed him because she likes him.
There were many people and situations that didn't work for the times. Roan's aunt and uncle have just left his sister in some strangers' hands. She only wanted to stay an extra month. Why didn't they stay with her?
Time lines: It took the aunt and uncle 40 days (about) to get back to NY. Then it took Roan about that long to get back to England. So...80 days when Aurora was "on her own." Really?
Prudence's sisters and her step-brother. Okay, they all married well. Why didn't they trot some nice young men around so that Prudence could choose one? None of them did anything to help her find a husband. Weird.
Sigh. I wish I had liked it more. It felt too contemporary, instead of historical. And too many mishaps just made it feel cluttered and overwrought. So many other reviewers have loved this, so this has to be a case of this book not being written for me.
I do thank Harlequin and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book.

Excruciating
By J B Jackson
So very disappointed in this story. It was really hard for me to believe that this was in the same series as books 1 & 2. Best-case, Prudence was an ill-defined character. Worst-case, she was a TSTL flibbertigibbet. Best-case, Roan was a level-7 susceptible. Worst-case, he was patronizing, condescending and incredibly stupid. It kind of felt like a Lifetime RoCo modified for the HiRo setting. The lovers were too modern, but everyone judging them were of the time. It can work when the characters are more savvy (like in Honor's book), but these two thought they were much smarter than they actually were. So many of their plans started out with, 'Oh, I totally know what I'm doing! I've thought this through,' only for them to fall apart with the slightest of prodding. I imagine that all of that was supposed to be farcical, but they just fell flat. Don't even get me started on their utter failure of a ruse at Howston Hall! The book did get better towards the end, but I have my doubts as to whether I'll bother finishing out the series.

this book really sucked me into the story
By Nikita @ Plot Twist Reviews
Prudence Cabot – sensible, courteous, impeccable Prudence – has always done exactly as society demands of her. Unfortunately for her, the antics and scandals created by her two older sisters overshadow all of Prudence ‘s attempts to be the “good one.” While waiting for the carriage that will take her to an out-of-town friend, she is provided an opportunity for adventure and spontaneity in the form of a handsome stranger in need of help – Mr. Roan Matheson. Roan is in desperate search for his missing sister who failed to return with the other family members on the boat from England to New York. Last he knew, his sister was in West Lee. Or was it Wesleigh? Or perhaps it was Weslay. Thankfully, Prudence steps in to help and the two begin a journey that will change their lives forever.
Wow, this book really sucked me into the story! I started and finished it all in one afternoon. Prudence is stuck in a rut with her family and I felt so bad for her. She feels trapped and helpless, desperate to rise above the scandals of her sisters and carve out a place for herself. Roan is charming and sweet, but feels the pressures of both society’s and his family’s expectations of him back in New York. I honestly didn’t know what he was going to choose to do and this tension kept me glued to the chair turning page after page. Together, these two make an excellent couple, two halves made whole. From the start, you could see how well these characters complimented each other. Their love is slow to develop and packs a powerfully emotional punch.
THE SCOUNDREL AND THE DEBUTANTE is the third in The Cabot Sisters series and while reading the previous two books would provide some better context for some of the plot, it really isn’t necessary to read those books to enjoy this one – it stands on its own. That said, the other two books in the series are also very good and come highly recommended.
