Running away from madmen

It is enough to just read the first chapter. Here Carl Sagan points out in two letters that there is a huge difference between a priori and a posteriori statistics. Problem is, the author simply does not understand. He still tries to make his 'point'. After the second letter Carl Sagan just gives up, if the author is incapable of understanding a simple thing any high school student would, what is the point of discussing? Needless to say that this is claimed to be some kind of 'running away'. The same way one simply does not discuss with mad people.
And he does even more: Muslims are compared to the worst of 'Non-believers', those who actively try to destroy Islam, just... because they do not believe the strange 19-theory of the author. Not because they do not believe in God, Quran, Messengers etc. This is madness at best.

About the Author
Alan J. Stolzer, Ph.D. is Chair and Professor of Doctoral Studies at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, Florida, USA. He holds a Ph.D. in Quality Systems from Indiana State University, and several professional certifications: Quality Engineer, Quality Manager, and Quality Auditor from the American Society for Quality; Project Management Professional from the Project Management Institute; Airline Transport Pilot, Flight Instructor with Instrument and Multi-Engine Ratings, and Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic from the Federal Aviation Administration. Dr. Stolzer has several thousand hours in more than 40 makes and models of fixed-wing aircraft. His research interests include safety, quality, flight operations quality assurance, safety management systems, and emergency preparedness. He is a prolific author and has been awarded and managed numerous grants and contracted training programs. Dr. Stolzer is involved in academic accreditation activities and has served as an expert witness and legal consultant on aviation accidents. Carl D. Halford has wide experience in many aspects of airline operations, including safety and quality, airline flight and simulator instruction, maintenance, management and union representation. Mr. Halford holds an Airline Transport Pilot certificate, with an assortment of type ratings, and has over 9000 hours of flight time in a variety of aircraft. Mr. Halford has held a variety of airline positions, including Manager of Voluntary Aviation Safety Programs, Manager of Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA), Manager of Aviation Safety Action Partnership (ASAP), and Manager of Part 121 Training. He has also been an Airline Pilots Association Master Executive Committee Chairman and holds several professional certifications. Mr. Halford has completed a Masters degree from DePaul University, with a specialization in Safety Management Systems (SMS). He has assisted in the construction of the Distributed National Archive for airline safety information, and is presently engaged in research with MITRE Corporation in this endeavor. John J. Goglia is an active consultant, author, and educator in the field of transportation safety. Mr. Goglia served as a Member of the National Transportation Safety Board from August 1995 to June 2004 and was the first Board Member to hold an FAA aircraft mechanic's certificate. As a Board Member, Mr. Goglia distinguished himself in numerous areas of transportation safety. In particular, he was instrumental in raising awareness of airport safety issues, including the importance of airport crash fire and rescue operations and the dangers of wildlife at airports, and played a key role in focusing international attention on the increasing significance of aircraft maintenance in aviation accidents. Mr. Goglia has been recognized many times for his contribution to aviation safety; awarding bodies include the National Air Disaster Alliance, Aviation Week and Space Technology, The Society of Automotive Engineers and the Air Transport Association (ATA). He currently serves on a number of Boards, including the Aviation Technical Training College in Singapore, and advises a number of organizations, including the Professional Aviation Maintenance Association.

Theory not practice

Perhaps this should be titled `The Theory of Implementing SMS in Aviation'. While the 14 chapters generally do cover their allocated areas competently with relatively original material, they are however primarily focused on theory not practice, limiting the value to a reader who has the real world challenge of establishing or developing an SMS. The greatest exception is Chapter 10 on safety reporting by Nick Seemel, a Canadian pilot, who shares his personal experience and enthusiasm. Only a couple of other chapters attempt to leverage any case studies, but in most cases the authors do not make use of the first hand experience they no doubt have. Despite having three editors, the chapters flow unevenly with frequent overlaps that readers new to the subject will find frustrating. For example the pillar of safety promotion has its own chapter but one of just 8 pages, the auditing chapter focuses on IOSA/IS-BAO etc rather than actual internal auditing and a chapter on information-sharing focuses on industry-wide schemes. Chapter 6, by Bill Yentis on `SMS implementation' (perhaps un-surprisingly) is probably the most comprehensive and balanced overview, though still focusing mostly on theoretical models. This is also one of the few chapters to acknowledge developments outside of the US. The book also lacks a solid concluding chapter, simply stopping at a short chapter on SMS aviation maintenance. As in the editor's previous collaboration, the book starts with a well written fictional safety story. This would have benefited from subsequent comment. Of the 17 authors, 16 are from the US. Five are consultants, five are researchers, three are from FAA/TSI and four work for air operators.

About the Author

EMMANUEL GUIBERT has written a great many graphic novels for readers young and old, among them the Sardine in Outer Space series, The Professor's Daughter with Joann Sfar, and Alan's War: The Memories of G.I. Alan Cope. Another of Guibert's recent works is The Photographer. Showered with awards, it relates a Doctors Without Borders mission in 1980s Afghanistan through the eyes of a great reporter. Guibert lives in Paris with his wife and daughter.

Sweet!

Bizzbilla is a fly who has a giant crush on Ariol. He doesn't know though as he has a crush on a cow named Petula. Bizzbilla only appears twice in this collection, and stars in both stories, but that was a little disappointing as I thought with the title and all she'd be featured throughout. A comprehensive and algorithmic approach to nonlinear system identification

This book is truly comprehensive in many different aspects: it covers most of the model classes currently used in black-box nonlinear system identification (an exception to this is fuzzy-logic models), it discusses time-domain and frequency-domain techniques for nonlinear systems, it deals with temporal (lumped-parameter) and spatio-temporal (distributed-parameter) models. Although most of the final models in the time domain are discrete-time, the author also addresses continuous-time models. Although it is hard to find all this for linear systems in a single book, the reader will find all such topics covered (with varying degrees of detail) in this book in the context of nonlinear systems! Two features stand out: i) an easy-to-uderstand overview of the specific problem at the beginning of each chapter and ii) an algorithmic approach to the problem of black-box system identification. In other words, the author provides step-by-step procedures for implementing the methods discussed in the book. On the other hand, the book does not provide fundamental system theory and some fundamental discussions are quite superficial, which is not surprising given the breath of the book. Therefore if you plan to implement and try some methods on your own, this is the book to go for, but it would be hard to teach a course following this book.

A Useful Text for System Identification, particularly NARMAX

The author of this book has contributed much to the field of Nonlinear System Identification. While the book seems short on theoretical development, it does provide a number of good algorithms for both linear and nonlinear system identification. Therefore, it has value to the reader who wishes to apply a method for developing a NARMAX model. The methods are well described with supporting examples. However, I wished the author had discussed over sampling further and methods to resample as needed for a NARMAX model. I have personally used algorithms similar to these described in Chapters 3 and 6 and have performed validations similar to the methods of Chapter 5. I am not a fan of Principal Component Analysis discussed in Chapter 4 as it tends to obfuscate and hide the key variables of a model when it then becomes necessary to apply the model in an attempt to control the system.

The development of Generalized Frequency Response Functions discussed in Chapter 6 for performing frequency domain analysis is intriguing. I have not encountered some of the technique used before but I look forward to exploring the subject further. While I was generally disappointed with attempting to used a Volterra approach a few years ago for this, the parametric method described deserves further examination. Unfortunately for the controls community, insufficient work has been performed in analyzing frequency response of nonlinear models. This is one of the few authors that has performed some exploration in this area.

Then the author gets into areas that could better, in my personal opinion, be omitted from the book. These include his discussion of Neural Nets and Automata Theory. The author's treatment of this is cursory and generally not useful in the vein of attempting to identify models for further control system work. However, if one is attempting to perform model identification for purposes other than control system development, there may good reasons and arguments for considering these chapters.

I would advise reading Chapter 14, Case Studies, in depth, as there is good information contained within. In my first reading, I more or less skimmed this chapter to my detriment. However, a later reference to it caused me to revisit this chapter. I wished the author had put some of the information contained therein in earlier chapters where, I believe, it belongs.

In my opinion, the book is overly referenced. Since the author has performed seminal work in this area and documented such in archival journals, he makes liberal use of this work and references it as such. It is my belief that the author does not need to make these references in the text of the chapters as the people to whom this book should be of interest already have awareness of the author and his work. Listing these papers in the Reference Sections of the chapters should be sufficient in most cases. In part, this is why I haven't rated the book as high as possible.

I could recommend this book to a practicing controls engineer. It is readable and the algorithms are generally clear and executable. I would not recommend this as a text for a graduate course. However, clearly, parts of the book could be used as references for a course in System Identification.

A love story unlike any other..Loved it! Recommended

There's Something About You by Yashodhara Lal is the story of Trish (Trishna). She is overweight, single, the sole caretaker of her Alzheimer suffering father and nosy mother and then jobless!

Adding more fuel to her already chaotic and troublesome life, enters Sahil. He is geeky, lean and normal in all sense except that he is sure that he has superpowers!

Can Trish handle all this trouble and succeed in bringing her life in order?

What is that feeling she gets with Sahil?
I fell in love with the cover of this book and could not help myself from checking it out! The blurb is interesting and had me agreeing that this was a book I wanted to read.

Right from the start, my attention was captured by the story which starts with an ordinary girl trying to stay afloat in a metropolitan city like Mumbai. Trish's quirks, eccentricities and her dysfunctional family had me grinning and enjoying as I stayed glued to my seat.

The plot is seemingly plain but it surprises us when we really get down to reading the book. The author's writing style is engaging, witty and expressive. I could visualize the scenarios, feel the emotions and couldn't help myself as I got transported to Trish's life.

The characters feel like real people with real problems. I loved Trish with all her insecurities, her parents especially her mother irritated me in the beginning but then slowly I started seeing the normal Indian mother pattern in her. She is like so many other Indian mothers, pestering their daughters to loose weight, get married then have children and always having a say in their personal lives. Then when the daughters get angry, they, like Trish's mother, make sweets and other delicacies to please them.

Sahil had me falling in love with him. He is so cute with his geeky look but mature enough to know how to handle situations. He complemented Trish perfectly and had me rooting for their happily-ever-after.

Trish's friend and neighbor is also a very interesting character and had me feeling like she was my best friend too. The other characters are also tastefully developed and provide an insight into the varied facets of human personality.

The pace of the story is perfect and the story carried forward fluidly. The suspense and the interconnecting of events had me feeling impressed with the author. The many subplots in the story are beautifully executed and closed. The whole Agony aunt column gave me a new perspective to Trish's character and also to the fact that people listen to sarcasm better than they do to kind words.

All in all, There's Something About You is a love story unlike any other. It has emotional play, suspense, relationship study, some mischief and whole lot of love. 4 out of 5 to it and recommended to everyone. Go read the book and enjoy. I loved Yashodhara's writing style and look forward to reading her other books soon.

Mindful love

A loser, fat, just fired, on the wrong side of twenties girl who is trying to find her calling and her zone. Who wants to read about losers, right? Wrong, we all want to know, what did she do right to be in this situation first?

The initial chapters build up to the actual love story and I found that very interesting. The moment she rescues a guy while almost drowning and then gets followed by a stranger, nearly pulverizing him!! The story warms up to a love a story very slowly, almost as if love is already there, it just needs to be accepted.

The novel has a lot of masala, magic and madness! Yes, never a dull moment. Right from the time Trish gets fired, almost dies and resurrects herself. The story of a girl trying to find herself and a guy who wants to forget himself till they find each other – could have been the tag line of the book. Two very different people but they just click the moment they meet. How they meet is another feather in Yashodhara’s cap!! Never have I read a book with not one but two meetings of this kind, well third time was indeed a charm for them! The one thing that pulled me in the book was the language. The way Trishna shares her thoughts about the things around her was so crisp, caustic and pretty much the voice of youth today.

The parents add a lot of reality and value to this book; it is not your typical fluffy romance. This story has a strong core, Trish might feel stifled with her life but this is the life she chose and will not have it any other way. The moments between the father – daughter were very endearing. The squabbles with her mom; well I think we all know why they read so familiar. Have we all not fought like that with our moms, grumbling yet grudgingly admitting defeat – can’t fool mom; can’t win from mom!!

The only odd point was the amount of medicines she gave to her Dad, a bit much but then her mother did cook a lot too! This story has a lot going on; the free loader, rich friend Akanksha and her sweet child Lisa add more layers to the story. And how can I forget the ‘Muscular Raj’ :) Will he get his own story? Maybe if he tries hard enough, he will find his sweet spot yet again!

Even though I was able to figure out what Akanksha was up to by her second appearance! It was a bit of a bummer there but still Lisa more than made up for her mother and I think for a secondary character Lisa was the best out of the lot.

Now the part that I really liked, well the letters were cool. I have read similar ones in a few magazines and they are all the rage. How Trish writes them and how they affect her helped me understand her character a lot better. Zee was so cruel for want of a better word but she was also the wind that helped Trish rise against the odds. Most of her growth was due to the treatment meted out to her by Zee. In life we do need a sudden push to get into action and so did Trish. So the clashes were like the fuel she needed to move ahead.

Sahil, now how can I not like him, cute, well mannered, kind and plays a guitar; he is so endearing. From all that he has been through, he turns out to be quite the stabilizer in the novel. The only thing I did not like was he not giving his readings of people to Trish! And I wanted to know more about him, have them alone for more conversations and just sea gazing! The charm of “You are still really irritating," and the sweet familiarity. Their friendly banter and faith in each other speaks volumes about love, much more than a testosterone charged exchange can. Sweet, practical and very endearing love; Sahil is all about embracing love in all its shades and moods.

All our lives are complicated but how we sort them is what matters most and if the companion is supportive & non-judgmental, it gets a lot easier. There’s Something About You is a breezy read with lots of “Something” – read and find out what?

Also I loved the page numbers in the middle of the page, so much easier to find where I was and the quirky arrow was cool, stylish too.

Excellent Clinical Resource

I am a licensed independent clinical social worker and addictions professional working in a unique environment. I have noticed the significant increase of clientele who have entered our institution with not only a pornography addiction, but it had escalated into viewing of child porn. I have decided to develop an educational course solely for our pornography addicts and purchased three books to review. "The Porn Trap" is not only an excellent resource for those who are overcoming problems caused by pornography, it is a excellent resource for the actual development of my group; along with the educational DVD I purchased.

I bought this book for my b/f that is trying to quit porn and he read a bunch in just a couple days and said he really likes it. Its such a relief to me!! And i looked for this book b/c as part of my homewrk in my human sexuality psychology college class, we had to read topics on the authors website and write about them. And i saw she has several books and it was exactly what i was looking for to help my b/f's and our situation. I havent read it yet but im looking forward to it.

My expectations when I bought the book was to learn about how pornography affects the dynamics of relationships. From a personal perspective I have used pornography and before I even picked up this book I knew that it affected how I interacted with other people because of guilt, shame, and the sexual objectivity I place on women. It was very enlightening to read about the many different situations individuals went through in the book. Pornography is a very scary thing and the stories in this book showcased the tragic impacts it has on people. Not only how it can result in a lost job, wife, or family, but many of these men use pornography as an outlet of intimacy and rob themselves and their wives of a fulfilling intimate relationship. It is very tragic to realize this because so many people will walk through life and not experience the abundance of joy that could come from that. I am not married, but I hope to experience that one day too. In today's culture I would recommend everyone read this if I could... God bless
