He has a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from SUPELEC in France, and a Master's degree in Microengineering from EPFL in Switzerland. He has more than 5 years of experience working in the domain of electrical engineering. His interests gravitate around electronics, home automation, the Arduino and the Raspberry Pi platforms, open source hardware projects, and 3D printing. For many of you Arduino enthusiasts, the project you work on will need a way to connect your hardware to a network. As a practical matter, that network is likely to be your local network or the Internet. This text gives a means, using the Arduino Ethernet shield. The slender nature of the book hints at how straightforward this can be.

Given the hardware, the steps in the text's examples show how to upload data, including how to plot this in a rudimentary way on a terminal window. Back to basics indeed. For debugging, this makes the mininum needed. No fancy interactions with a web server. At least initially. But the text then goes onwards, to explain to to hook up to a web server. Chapter 3 actually makes the web on the Arduino motherboard. Impressive use of the memory and CPU now commonly available in Arduino !

Another key variant is later in the book, when it shows how to use a web server on the Internet to remotely control your device. The advantages and uses are manifold. Albeit with the requirement that the device needs to be accessible from the Internet.

As much fun as it is connecting sensors to an Arduino, and displaying data on a LCD, lighting LED's, or other local actions, the real power is when you connect to a network. Whether it's a local network and you are communicating between them or collecting data in a central database (Raspberry Pi), or connecting to the internet and contributing local weather data to a server, or broadcasting data with email or Twitter, even pulling down information like emails, tweets, or scraping other websites for data for local display, there's a lot of fun to be had.
One book that explains how this all works, and gives you easy to replicate (and understand) projects is "Arduino Networking" by Marco Schwartz. This book delves into the abilities of network connectivity, explaining how and why it works, and leaves your mind swirling with new applications, and the ability to execute them. It's a must have on any maker's shelf!

A Great Work

If you are interested in Ethics and/or Value theory/Axiology; this is a must have. Feldman provides the best formulation and defense of hedonism I have ever seen. Feldman writes in such a clear and entertaining style that you really don't need to have a lot of background to understand what is going on. However, if you are studying seriously, you cannot go wrong with Feldman. He lays out arguments and comments on them in such a way that you cannot help but follow along. He is very fair but also a bit cagey. He may not be explicitly advocating any form of hedonism, but you can figure out where his heart is at.

We have been UConn fans forever (it seems ) and we loved watching Caron Butler when he played for the team. I have to say I was so blown away by his story that I immediatly ordered more copies and gave them out to friends kids in both middle and high school to read. We are all aware of some of the backgrounds of basketball players (Allen Ivetson comes to mind) but I have never before read or heard a story so raw and expressive on what some of these players go through and what they overcome just to make it into college, much less into the pros. An amazing-can't - put- down book that should be in every middle school reading list and library. Thank you, Caron Butler!!

Redemption!

For those of us who enjoy college basketball, we know, when watching a game, that many of the players did not have easy childhoods, perhaps scarred by poverty, drugs and other problems. Caron Butler ended up in prison before he was 16 years old for selling drugs. If you expect a story about this player's exploits at UConn and in the pros, you will be disappointed, there is only one chapter about each. But if you expect a book about redemption, about turning things around, this is a wonderful book for adults and for high school students.

An amazing story of an amazing young man

This is an amazing story of an amazing young man. I watched him play at UCONN but never knew his story. What he has done to overcome his adolescent life is a tribute to him, his mom, his grandmother and some other caring people along the way. What he gives back shows his character. This is a story for everyone.

Good song. Bad quality.

This is a good song composed by Mithoon and sounds good played on the piano or keyboard. However, the image quality is horrible and is a taxing task to read and understand. I hope the publishers will try to improve the definition of the sheets. Otherwise well done.

Enjoyable F/F Fantasy Romance (3.5 stars)

I enjoyed this quick slice of fantasy. It has a fairly standard setting – dragons, mages, combatants/knights, a pseudo-Medieval European setting – which most readers will be familiar and comfortable with. Fans of Sasha L. Miller will also be familiar with her style of pitching a grumpy character against a much more easy going one. In this case Devi is the grumpy combatant who is fed up of rich, whiny mages getting in the way when she’s trying to do her job.

I would have liked to have known more about what happened between her and her previous mage partner, since the potential reprimand weighs on Devi’s thoughts a fair bit throughout the book, and perhaps a bit more about the other mages she’s clashed with. Devi’s not the most likable character, being very prickly, with a hefty chip on her shoulder regarding wealthy mages and her own personal reasons for becoming a combatant, so it might have been nice to know what really went on (even from her pov) to see whether she really was to blame in all cases.

Luckily, Noeme is her complete opposite. Not that we get to know her all that well, but she tends to smile and maintain a cheerful attitude even when Devi’s being her most anti-mage. She also proves herself to be competent, which is nice. However, it seems she too has frequently been partnered with less decent combatants, making it seem as if these two are the only professional people out there.

I liked the different classes of dragons that the pair discuss on their way to deal with the threat, but I have to admit it might have been nice to have had more dragons. Or at least more dragon time. Still, this is only a novella and the plot is definitely split between dragon threat and romance, so I suppose the romance trumped any more dragon action. The romance itself is sweet and fairly straightforward, showing a softer side to Devi – which is definitely needed.

Overall this is an enjoyable read with a standard fantasy world and a sweet romance. It’s not my favorite of Miller’s tales, but if you’re looking for an easy, F/F romance with fantasy elements, this definitely fits the bill.

Good Reading

Constantly traveling for work-related reasons doesn’t leave a lot of time for a personal life. Is this about to change for Devi?

One of the things I enjoyed the most about reading this book was learning about the different types of dragons and what it takes to defeat them. The plot took the time to explain this part of Devi’s occupation in detail every time the pace slowed down enough to talk about topics other than what was happening in the moment. Her work is dangerous and unpredictable. Knowing so much about what she was trying to accomplish on her mission with Noeme only made me like both characters more.

There were a few minor pacing issues. Conflicts that I thought were going to carry on until the end were resolved much more quickly than I expected them to. Their solutions did make sense, but the transition from the old conflicts to what worried the characters later on was a little abrupt at times. With that being said, this is a minor criticism of an otherwise fun and engaging tale.

The narrator gave Noeme and Devi the opportunity to get to know each other before anything even remotely romantic began to occur. I liked seeing them interact as colleagues and friends first as it added an extra layer of meaning to later scenes. This was a smart decision. It really made me hope they’d end up together.

I’d recommend Slaying Dragons to fans of romance and historical fantasy stories alike. It blends both genres together beautifully!

Sexy Magic Action

I absolutely loved it. I wished it was longer...I wished I could delve more in the characters. There was such a contrast between the two major female characters that some more background would just have added more depth to it all.
The story was well structured. Reminded me of Harry Potter, that is magic as an everyday happening with an infrastructure to it. This time not a school but sort of a military force.
Liked the idea of combining mages and warriors, the ethereal with the brute forces. And obviously the romance, which was quite credible and sexy.
Honestly I couldn't get enough.
Can we have a sequel please of where the story finished? There can be many! Or a prequel?
