As a couples therapist, I have long suggested Stan Tatkin’s books to my clients as an significant part of therapy and their ongoing journey as a couple. Now Stan has presented the perfect companion for those clients who have not yet paired up, are in the beginning stages of pairing up, or even those who are in relationship but want to deepen their understanding of attraction, commitment and longterm success in relationship. In this new book, Stan offers the “science” of attachment, neurobiology, arousal systems along with practical skill based exercises to guide the reader in the picking, vetting, dating and committing process. Stan’s natural ability to relate his brilliance and interpersonal self is felt on every page of this book! I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the journey of dating.

Dr. Tatkin's Books Helped Us Create the Best Relationship!

I love all of Dr. Stan Tatkin's work and have also read Wired for Love and listened to his entire audio program, Your Brain on Love. I highly, highly recommend his books and have interviewed him on my radio show and YouTube channel 4 times now, which is probably more than anyone else in the 8 years the show has been on the air. Wired for Dating will give you a basic understanding of attachment types, helpful stories that provide some context, and exercises to give you practice and insight into your reactive patterns in dating and relationships. Dr. Tatkin's work has transformed my relationship and I have finally been able to create a "secure functioning" relationship within a "couple bubble" that gives me and my partner the secure attachment we didn't get as kids. We both feel so grateful to have discovered his material and I wish this stuff was common knowledge. Even if your childhood attachments were great and your relationships have been solid, if you're out in the world of dating, you're going to bump into people who didn't have that experience. It's helpful to know how to relate and communicate with authenticity in a way that isn't likely to trigger them. You'll learn a lot about yourself and the people you're dating.

The exercises are explicit and easy to follow

This is very different from other books on dating because of the psychobiological approach. The explanation of different attachment styles and how it relates to understanding the connection between the couple from the beginning to ongoing relationships is so clear and the case examples make it very relatable. The exercises are explicit and easy to follow. I especially appreciated the chapter teaching people how to calm their partner's nervous system as well as their own. I will highly recommend this book to friends and therapy clients, to those are dating and as an adjunct to Wired for Love.

He teaches digital photography at local camera stores and presents seminars and workshops about digital photography. A Little Disappointing

I have Corey Hilz's second edition Lensbaby book, so my expectations for this book were high. This book fell short. The general theme of this book to me was exposure and how to operate your camera. There is nothing wrong with that, but with Lensbaby lenses, you need the hows and whys, which for me didn't happen.

The very last section of the book showed a few pictures taken with Lensbaby lenses, which are beautiful and state the exposure used, but for me it wasn't enough.

If you can afford a little more to buy a book on Lensbaby, I recommend Cory Hilz's second edition "Lensbaby: Bending Your Perspective". I can only give this Kindle book 3 stars.

Lensbaby Secrets Revealed!

As an avid Lensbaby Enthusiast myself---I believe, this is a tremendous resource for experienced and novice photographers interested in unlocking the key to Lensbaby success! Instead of learning everything by "trial and error", Doug Sahlin has provided ideal uses for the various optic systems and beautiful rich photographs that show his artistic talents. He has captured the ability to share the concepts of working with Lensbaby Optics and getting creative results.

Equally valuable are his insights into how to create better images which can be used on any photographic journey. The chapter on composition provides rationale and specific tips on developing ones own style of photography. Being able to develop skills to enhance your results cuts across all lens and is significant for all photographers.

This book and his enthusiasm made me grab my beloved Lensbaby Composer Pro and head outside to reconnect with the wonder and joy using a Lensbaby.

Thanks Doug, for a wonderful resource with such valuable information! It is a staple now in my Kindle Library and I can refer to it often--perfect for when I am on the go and at home.

For those desiring to use the Lensbaby system

I have followed the photography of Doug Shalin and his expertise with the Lensbaby system of lenses, so when he published this Kindle book I purchased it immediately.

Doug gives a considerable amount of basic information on photography generally and builds on this to put a newbie on a successful path with the Lensbaby optics available. He points out differences of operation by the major brands of camera using Lensbaby optics, the variety of Lensbaby lens bodies, Muse, Composer Pro, Control Freak, and Scout, and how the optics work in these bodies, and the accessories available, as well as which optics these accessories work with, and details on the optics design. There are also warnings in the form of Tips to steer a user away from problems of exposure and operational issues with these interchangeable optics.

If you are considering the Lensbaby System of Optics, get this book; it will help eliminate much initial frustration and flatten your learning curve with these lenses.

I wish a book like Doug's have been available when I started with the Lensbaby; much of my initial confusion would have been cleared up.

Thoughtful and insightful explanations of our present moral and cultural decay

Jack Chick and David W. Daniels have been HUGE with my understanding how present day events erode our moral compasses without our even realizing it on occasion. We have been brainwashed to believe that many predicaments occurring around us are, on the surface, "harmless", when in truth they are anything BUT.

I am thankful to Chick and Daniels for all their publications, as these have helped my own spiritual growth as a KJV Bible and God believing Christian, for without them, my road may have been a bit rockier. Thanks Gents!!

Great book that all true Bible believing Christians should read. Our church leaders need to preach these topics and get off the "love gospel" which is not setting anyone free. Paul said I preach Christ and Him crucified. That's what sets men free.

I am at the heart of the increasingly voluble discussion on "conscious leadership" and "culture" in dynamic companies. I have run companies, and I routinely advise early and mid-stage companies on practices to increase effectiveness and develop more transparent communication structures.

I found this book to be invaluable in terms of laying out a clear and directive structure regarding core principles companies can deploy to create a more aware and effective workplace. Although it seems obvious -- and although words like "authenticity" are bandied about quite a bit in management discussions -- this book offers direct guidance on what it means to create an organization where candor and authenticity are the very lifeblood of the company. Where gossip is not present. Where being "right" is less valuable than being curious.

This book is more than just theoretical, although it's immensely thoughtful. It is real and it is executable. As our workforce changes and as millennials increasingly are demanding roles in companies that put "growth" of people as a guiding principle, using this book and these commitments as guideposts will be invaluable.

Weeks is an Approved Supervisor and a Clinical Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, as well as certified by the American Board of Sexology. He has currently completed his 16th professional textbook having published in the fields of sex, marital, and family therapy. Each chapter addresses common mistakes made in the area that chapter covers and offers suggestions on how to avoid those mistakes. The authors include examples of counseling situations where mistakes were made or avoided to demonstrate what they are talking about. Mistakes may be philosophical/conceptual or applied. Philosophical or conceptual mistakes refer to incorrect assumptions. Applied mistakes refer to a poor use or no use of theory. Mistakes are often hard to recognize.
Mistakes can be made in any one of the following areas:
Structure
If there is no structure, the couple replays the dynamics of their interactions at home in the therapy session.
The therapist must demonstrate that he/she is on the side of the relationship, not the side of one individual.
Confidentiality
Therapists can choose models of confidentiality when seeing couples ranging from sharing everything from individual sessions with both spouses to sharing nothing from individual sessions with the other spouse. The authors recommend a model they call accountability with discretion, in which the therapist maintains information from individual sessions in confidence unless it is detrimental to the goals of the couple. In that case, the therapist asks the individual to share with his/her spouse. If the individual refuses, the therapist tells the couple that he/she is aware of information that makes it impossible to do couple therapy.
Neutrality
Partners often want the therapist to side with them against their partner, whom they see as more emotional, "sick," less articulate, etc. The therapist needs to maintain neutrality and must probe to know if the couple views the therapist as neutral.
Getting a full list of the clients' problems
Past and present must be held in balance.
Listening for a full range of problems
The therapist must be aware of indications of abuse, affairs, addictions, and severe pathology, as couples often try to hide such problems.
Completing the assessment before intervening
Intervening too quickly or too slowly is a problem. Therapists need to be aware of therapist issues that interfere with treatment, such as uncomfortable topics, blind spots, avoiding or minimizing issues, and lack of training.
Attending to the process
Therapists need to teach clients the process of resolving conflicts, as opposed to focusing only on content. Tone of voice, body language, and use of language ("I" vs. "you") are things that couples need to pay attention to. Process can be made explicit in the course of therapy.
Conflict
Conflict can be covert, overt, or a combination. The intensity of conflict may be high or low. The therapist must manage anger and conflict in the session.
Continuum of how couples perceive situations
Some couples can agree on most things, some couples have some disagreements, and some couples disagree on almost everything.
Reframing
A reframe is a statement designed to change the perception or emotional meaning that the client attaches to a behavior or event. Reframes often prepare the client for additional interventions.
Evaluating commitment
Commitment should be discussed when the couple raises the issue or when there are clues that one or both partners are thinking about leaving the relationship.
Spirituality
The therapist should not overlook or impose spirituality.

This book is a valuable resource to anyone who is practicing couples therapy. Of particular interest to me was the list of statements designed to foster closeness and statements designed to create distance, as these could be used as examples in working with clients. The section on dealing with conflict was also helpful, as the following steps for dealing with conflict were explained: normalize, recognizing individual roles, questioning the meaning each partner assigns to the other's behavior, and instilling hope that the couple can learn new ways of coping. Therapists also need to remember that symptoms serve some type of useful function. Reframing can change the focus of therapy from the individual to the couple. Therapists can learn from the mistakes of others by reading this book, as well as learning some things to watch for to know when they have made a mistake and what they should do about it.

A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY THERAPIST

I wish I had more time to write a detailed review. This is by far the best book I have ever read on couples therapy. I just came back to Amazon to purchase other books that Gerald Weeks has written. If they are as complete, pleasurable to read, in depth and useful as this one, I will be quite satisfied. This book would have been great to have a novice therapist but even now the writing articulates problems and solutions in such a clear helpful manner. I have hundreds upon hundreds of books on couples and family therapy and I could not put this one down. It was highlighted and weathered the night it received it. A real gem.

Weeks and his collaborators offer help to beginning as well as seasoned therapists regarding avoidance or correction of the most prevalent mistakes made when treating couples. The general categories addressed are:

This is another one of those books I wish had been around when I was a young therapist. It provides clear guidance in many situations where couple therapists are often stuck. It also serves as a reminder to all therapists that therapeutic mistakes are common. That is encouraging to both young and older therapists. I intend to recommend this book to all my therapist friends because of its clarity and practicality.

Excellent mid-sized Medicine text

Excellent mid-sized Medicine text. Besides Kumar and Clark's (another British text), there do not appear to be any texts of this size for medical students in their clinical years, after Stobo's The Principles and Practice of Medicine was discontinued. I found Andreoli and Carpenter's Cecils Essentials of Medicine (7th edition) to be too simplified at times (seemed to be more relevant for 2nd year students rather than those on rotations) as well as full of errors. Harrison's is at times too long and dense for students to absorb while on their rotations, as are specialty-specific texts. Although written for British medical students, the practice of medicine is largely the same in the United States, and despite the differences in spelling of some words, Davidson's is extremely readable as well as being concise.
