Printable questionnaire's?

Having bought the book and just started reading it, it seems to be well written and clear, the issue that I have encountered is that there are many questionnaires in the book and obviously on the kindle edition there is no way of marking one's responses. I am not sure if there is a companion website where one could download the questionnaire portions, print them out and mark them up as this would really increase the utility of the book since this is positioned as a practical guide and the participation of the reader is crucial to understanding the concepts in 'Night School'.

If such a site or resource exists would be great to have a link to that on the purchase page or in the item description, as otherwise the usefulness of the book is diminished greatly!

The Book's a WOW!

I'm a retired psychologist so the subject of sleeping and dreaming has been of interest to me throughout both my career and my personal life. This book is the best organized and written one on the subject I've ever come across. The author has taken a great deal of in-depth research that could have been dry and overwhelming, but he has organized it and presented clearly and easy to read and understand. As is his style, tucked in here and there are delightful touches of humor that add to the pleasure of reading it. In addition, this book is one that a person having difficulty with sleep could benefit from as it includes steps a reader can take to improve sleep, concentration and learning. I think Professor Wiseman is a unique contributor to our understanding of human existence. This book on sleep fits right in with his other winners such as Quirkology, 59 Seconds and The Luck Factor all of which are available on Amazon.

good book

I came across this book by accident, on youtube.
But I am happy I did!

I love any neuroscience type book and you can't more into brains than sleep.

But it is an easy read and full of information.
I appreciate it because I work graveyards and need every bit of info.

Thank you Mr. Richard for such a nice book.

I refuse to believe it's over

I don't think I'm ready to say goodbye to this phenomenal series. A few years ago, fresh after getting my first Kindle (which was a big deal for an English language reader not living in an English speaking country) I randomly chose "Johannes Cabal: The Necromancer" as my next read. Oh boy, I was in for a ride. The adventures of a necromancer of some little infamy quickly became on of my favourite book series ever. A series which is now coming to a close (at least for the time being, as the author claims).

The fifth and final (?) book doesn't make this farewell easy - it might be the best in the series. It has everything that drawn me to Cabal's world in the first place, and much more. It's hilarious, well paced and action packed, with great dialogue and fantastic characters (can I get a Zarenyia spin-off series, pleaaase?). It's relentless, endless fun, and for that alone I encourage everyone to grab a copy. However, what really elevates the series for me is how well the author constructed our (anti?)hero Johannes Cabal, and how he lets him evolve. Creating a character that never fails to deliver laughs is one thing, but giving him depth displayed so naturally, in a way that never seems forced is a real accomplishment. Bravo, Mr. Howard!

So, my life of a reader will feel a bit emptier now that I have no Cabal novel to wait for (I am hoping for some short stories in the coming months, though). Nevertheless, I am grateful to Mr. Howard for sharing this five part awesomeness with us, excited about his other, future works and hoping that someday Cabal will return.

**Spoilers**The Cabal series is (in my opinion) one of the best fantasy series of the last decade. But this book fell short of the rest in this series for me. I feel like it got bogged down in its own style, and I ended up skipping half of it on my first read through and still understood the last chapter just fine. I thought Horst's characterization was a bit odd, I had never thought of him as an idiot before but this book took every opportunity it could to say "Oh yes, by the way, Horst is dumb". I get that he's in the company of Leonie and Johannes, but I always enjoyed how Horst was people-smart while Johannes was book-smart.

And I was really let down by the Red Queen, especially considering how much she was built up in the previous book. I was expecting an actual nemesis for Johannes, someone who could really challenge him, and even win in the end. It just left me going "eh" at the end.

I would still recommend this series to anyone who loves fantasy, the other books are still great enough to make it worth the time. And even this one had some great sections, I just don't think it's as good as the rest of the series.

Fair Warning: This review will include major spoilers for the previous four Johannes Cabal books, as well as several of the short stories. If you haven’t read any of the previous books, you really should stop now and click HERE.

Now, on with the show.

If H.P. Lovecraft and Douglas Adams had a lovechild, that gibbering lunatic is surely Jonathan L. Howard. Howard (who does borrow from the Lovecraft mythos) uses a sense of cosmic horror, peppered liberally with dry ridiculousness and wry humor to create something truly unique and fantastic. We are speaking here of Johannes Cabal.

Readers of the previous books will know Johannes Cabal as a necromancer, formerly also the ringmaster of an infernal circus, foiler of despotic maniacs, wanderer of Dreamlands, and foiler of despotic maniacs’ daughters. He is the kind of cold-blooded analytical soul who makes Sherlock Holmes (and also Professor Moriarty) look like puppy hugging imbeciles in comparison.

This fifth book finds Cabal hot on the trail of his ultimate goal: a cure for death. Clues left behind by an old defeated enemy point to a metaphysical path which leads (theoretically) to the fountain of youth. Cabal, never one to be turned from his goal once his mind is set, must recruit the help of his vampire brother, Horst, along with what allies he may call upon (you’d be right in guessing that the list is not long) to tread this path and finally achieve his heart’s desire.

I am (obviously) a fan of Howard’s previous Johannes Cabal stories, and have been waiting quite (im)patiently for this one to come out. I’m pleased to say that I was not disappointed. Howard brings back a few beloved characters from previous books, and it is always delightful to watch the misanthropic Cabal navigate the world of human social interaction.

So bottom line: if you’re a fan of the series, you’ll be quite pleased with the latest book, and should begin reading immediately. If you’e never heard of the series, you really shouldn’t have read this far. But as you are reading this, you should go get the first book in the series: Johannes Cabal the Necromancer, and begin reading immediately.

I sat down to read this piece of dystopian fiction expecting and eagerly anticipating a book similar
To the the novels I've come to expect of this genre(Hunger Games, World War Z, etc). Instead, what I read was a book that made me think, not just entertain; a book that truly frightened me because, unlike other books in this genre, we're already beginning to live this future. Splinterlands is both thoughtful and entertaining. I would hope that readers are sufficiently informed by Splinterlands that they are compelled to take action our future depends on it

The Splintering

This short speculative novel by John Feffer presents a chilling view of a global collapse just around the corner. A literal splintering. For those paying attention to the direction globalization is taking us, the narrative is convincing. Not so appealing is the “presentation” of the “content.” Therein lies the problem: the narrator, an academic and acclaimed author Julian West describes his literal displacement by Hurricane (ahem) Donald in 2022 which floods and decimates Washington, D.C., forcing West to his roof. Thank you, global warming.

It is not clear at the outset why, but some twenty-five years later, aged and in ill-health, West is bedridden and decides to contact his three estranged children and wife, all scattered across the globe. He does this with a virtual headset and avatar, Virtual tours plus “face to face” meetings in venues as diverse as Brussels, China, and Africa. West’s children have all taken separate paths, adjusting to the collapse in their own ways, but all have misgivings with their father. So we basically have three separate dialectics which doesn’t make for fully fleshed out drama. The splintering of the family is directly analogous to the splintering of the geopolitical landscape. Like the Syfy series, “Incorporated,” there are green and red zones.

This is less of a problem in the concluding two chapters where human interaction is more compelling. West contacts his estranged wife of 25 years, Rachel, also once a scholar researcher, who turned her back on academia to join a commune in Vermont, quite successfully as it turns out. West is receiving some experimental treatment for a pandemic staph infection. Rachel is ill, too and Julian wants them to be together to share the treatment. The transmission is cut off before she can answer.

In the final chapter we learn why West is receiving the treatment and from whom as well as other ulterior motives for contacting his family. It’s worth a look and makes for a quick read.

Another Short History of the Future

[Full disclosure: I have known the author for several years and had a small part in a production of one of his plays, in which he also performed. Our acquaintance has not led me to soften this review -- if I hadn't liked the book, I just wouldn't have reviewed it.]

"Splinterlands" is about "Splinterlands", a popular political tome of the early 2020s on a par with books by authors like Francis Fukuyama and Thomas Piketty in terms of its popularity and notoriety. And it's also about the Splinterlands, the disintegration of the interconnected post-Cold War liberal consensus world of international organizations and commerce that takes place between roughly 2018 and the middle of the 21st century, when the action of this short novel takes place. It's a first-person narrative by the largely sidelined author of "Splinterlands" after the fall of the current order, both a political account and an account of his own broken life and family.

There are elements of Whitley Strieber and James Kunetka's "Warday" here, in that "Splinterlands" is a tour of a post-catastrophe realm, spending sections on the fates of various cities and nations and how they got there. (Unlike "Warday", the Armageddon here wasn't wrought by bombs but rather by climate change and neo-nationalism in the form of Trump, Farage, Le Pen, and company.) Those seeking a traditional novel may be disappointed, as these aspects of "Splinterlands" are essentially a journalistic-style account of recent history from the perspective of about forty years hence. (In that respect, "Splinterlands" follows in the tradition of "A Short History of the Future" by W. Warren Wagar, another progressive writer.)

One of the most compelling aspects of "Splinterlands" is the set of endnotes, intended to have been appended later by a skeptical scholar. These reminded me of the notes in Nabokov's "Pale Fire" -- they tell an entire story on their own, greatly enriching the whole.

"Splinterlands" is a pessimistic work, but one that rings true. Feffer leaves it to the reader to decide whether it presents a world that is inevitable, or one that can yet be avoided.

I specifically like the changes in the terminology to cultural competence; the additions to Chapter 5 on assessment; the addition of the importance of addressing spiritual strengths/needs; the inclusion of websites; and the addition of action steps in Chapter 6. My reaction is very positive…I plan to use the 3rd edition when it is published!"

About the Author
Karen K. Kirst-Ashman is Professor Emerita and former chairperson in the Social Work Department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she taught for 28 years. She has written six social work textbooks in multiple editions and numerous publications, articles, and reviews on social work and women's issues. She also has served on the Editorial Board of AFFILIA: Journal of Women and Social Work, and as a consulting editor for many social work journals including the Journal of Social Work Education. Dr. Kirst-Ashman has been a member on the Board of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and has served as a CSWE accreditation site visitor on various occasions. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Wisconsin. She has been the recipient of both the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Roseman Award for Excellence in Teaching and the University Outstanding Teaching Award. She earned her BSW degree and MSSW degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Ph.D. in social work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has worked as a practitioner and administrator in child welfare and mental health agencies.

Grafton Hull is a full professor at the University of Utah College of Social Work. He founded and directed the College's BSW Program. He has 38 years of experience teaching at BSW, MSW, and Ph.D. levels. His practice experience includes work in human service agencies providing mental health, child welfare, and juvenile justice programs. He holds a BS in sociology, an MSW, and a doctorate in education (counseling, guidance, and personnel services). Hull is the co-author of seven texts and numerous articles in social work journals. He has served on the CSWE Board of Directors, Commission on Accreditation, and Nominations Committee; and as a President of the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors (BPD), from which he received the Significant Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. His biography is listed in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA.

A preview of cancer books 20 years from now

A close relative of mine is a cancer survivor, and the shadow of this horrific disease has become a new member in our family. Weinberg's book is a quick and very well written primer for the layman on cancer and the history of oncological research. Not only does it contain up to date information about the latest genetic discoveries in the field, but it also presents them in a didatic and lighthearted style only an insider could offer. Reading this book, I felt like having a glimpse of the kind of books that will be written abou cancer in (hopefully) 20 years: books in which all the mechanisms leading to tumor formation will be laid bare for the student, and effective therapies will be available for all kinds of cancer, with minor burden of side effects. Books in which all the suffering caused by cancer nowadays will be as part of medical history as polio is. I felt enpowered by this book and actually enjoyed reading it (the account of how a virus can cause cancer by stealing proto oncogenes from normal cells is fascinating). The only reason I have not given 5 stars is some difficulty in the last chapters due to the complicated naming conventions of genes, but I guess this is a fault of the unfinished status of genetic oncology and my ignorance. If cancer or the history of medical research in general interests you, I strongly recommend this book.

Excellent overview for the nonscientist and scientist

As a scientist, I am familiar with most of the discoveries in cancer research discussed in the book. Weinberg nicely ties them together and explains how one exciting discovery in cancer research led to another. This is an excellent overview of what has been discovered about cancer and what is not known. Weinberg points out that many of the discoveries were from areas of research not directly related to cancer. This book should help the nonscientist understand the complexities of research and why so much time and resources have been required to uncover the mechanisms of cancer. I also highly recommend this book to students at all levels that are interested in any type of research.

Another Magical Animal Adoption Agency Story

This is the second book in the Magical Animal Adoption Series. It was a cute story which deals with the importance of caring for animals, believing in yourself and others as well as looking beyond what is right in front of your face.

Clover works at the Magical Animal Adoption Agency. They have brought in a mysterious egg and do not know what will hatch. Mr. Jams goes off to bring back an egg expert and leaves Clover in charge. While he is gone, lots of things happen. The egg hatches, but Clover can not find the animal. She sets all kinds of traps but has no success. What she does find are things being chewed up, food eaten and items destroyed. She must catch the magical animal before Mr. Jams returns. Meanwhile a box of kittens is left on the doorstep. One floats, one tumbles, one send sparks from its tail and the last freezes things with looks from its eyes. She is becoming very worried that she is not able to do the job Mr. Jams has given her. Luckily her pet kitten, Dipity, is able to calm the kittens. She handles a couple of adoptions (a unicorn and a fairy horse) quite successfully. She meats a giant couple who want a pet, but she has nothing for them at the time. The Vetranarian, the giants, the ghost and the Leprechauns all let her know what a great job she is doing. In the end, everything turns out just right. A great story with simple black and white illustrations that give just enough visuals to appeal to children.

Fun read - good sequel.

10yo daughter was so excited to finally get this book and find out what was in the egg! She loved the first book and loved this sequel. She has read it a few times already. Overall and fun read for younger kids. .

A Book for both Boys and Girls

I'm looking forward to more books in this series. It will appeal to the children I babysit- a 7 year-old princess and magic-loving girl and a 5 year-old animal-loving boy! Looking forward to reading both books to them.

Darker and deeper as the series gets to a close

As expected from Joseph Delaney, this latest installment in the Wardstone Chronicles is just as thrilling as all the others. And as the series comes closer to its end, it is darker. Slither, a haizda mage who farms humans for his needs, is introduced and comes to question whether a fierce warrior such as he is beginning to grow soft as he attempts to fulfill a dying farmer's wish (actually, a trade) while at the same time facing ruthless adversaries, the circumstances being a direct result of the actions he took while on a journey with the farmer's three daughters. He meets and works with the witch assassin Grimalkin to prove his innocence in a trial by combat, and what follows seem to lead that we will be seeing him again. Delaney also hints that there might be a connection with one aspect of this story with the final battle that is coming.

I liked how the author dealt with a serious issue such as slavery in this book. Although I liked this story just as much as the others, I miss the Spook, Tom, and Alice. This isn't their story, after all. But, Delaney still gave us a character that we would love to read and know more about.

Good Book, don't yet see the point of it, maybe I will in later books in the series.

This book was a different turn from the series, like I Am Grimalkin it is not all focusing on Thomas Ward, Alice and John Gregory.

I found I Am Grimalkin a good move for the series but right now I don't see this book doing the series justice.

Overall it was a good book but i just wont be able to fully understand this book until I read upcoming books in the series.
