GREAT book!

As a newer paramedic I often found myself wishing I was better at differential diagnosis. Progressing through my career I've learned things through experience and sometimes wished I could learn more about diagnosing what's going on with my patients prior to coming across it in the field and just making an educated guess. This book is full of very good information about how very specific conditions will present to you. I purchased it to take the AMLS class and would definitely recommend not only this purchase, but the class to any EMS providers out there!

Excellent!

I am a paramedic in Texas and I work for 911 in a large, multi-demographic population. This book expanded my knowledge and gave me more clinical "tools" to assess and treat my patients. I would recommend this book and class offered by NAEMT.

Too much info

We were hoping the book would provide more ideas about how a child can appropriately express and deal with their anger or being mad. The book excessively addresses what can cause someone to get mad, but not enough solutions for our needs. The artwork was a bit too "busy" but could definitely spark some conversation. However, the content is geared to the age range listed in the description. Most of the solutions are suited to a child that is mature enough to stop themselves to talk it out. Again, the book is probably much more helpful to a child 6-8 years old.

This book has a good message for children regarding expressing anger appropriately; however, it is a little long and detailed for younger children. I would say it's better suited for ages 7+. The illustrations were good and the writing was well done.

Back in the 1990s, when Pais ("Subtle Is the Lord...") began to seriously consider writing about Oppenheimer, there was no full-scale biography of the scientist who led America's effort to create the atom bomb. But with a surfeit of books about Oppenheimer in the last year, this one comes too late—and suffers greatly in comparison to Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's more comprehensive and cogent American Prometheus. Though Pais, a physicist as well as a science writer, was a close colleague of Oppenheimer's at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Studies, he is largely incurious about the parts of his subject's life that he didn't observe personally. He does little more than acknowledge the Manhattan Project, for example, noting that it has been covered elsewhere, and dismisses Oppenheimer's wife as despicable with barely any supporting evidence. Some chapters are assembled by lengthy quotes from secondary sources, others by anecdote, some barely developed past outline form; none are particularly engrossing. Pais died before he could write about the political hearings that cost Oppenheimer his security clearance and public reputation. The final chapters covering this period, written by Crease, a historian at Brookhaven National Laboratory and author of The Prism and the Pendulum, are such a marked improvement that one wishes he'd produced a biography on his own. In the present book, Pais (who was a distinguished theoretical physicist) once again combines his sophisticated understanding of the science and his insider's knowledge of the man (he was Oppenheimer's next-door neighbor for many years) to produce a stunning portrait. Historian of science Crease completed the book after Pais's death.

Pais, a longtime colleague of Oppenheimer, long postponed the writing of this life study because of deep personal ambivalence toward the man who presided over the making of America's first atomic bomb only to fall victim to McCarthy-era hysteria. As a consequence of that delay, Pais died before finishing his book. Surprisingly, readers may find that an unintentionally truncated book actually highlights the troubling incompleteness that Pais perceives in Oppenheimer's character. For although Pais details Oppenheimer's rare achievements as a researcher, teacher, and administrator, the portrait he finally delivers is that of a brilliant but arrogant mind falling short of lofty expectations. To the end of his life, Oppenheimer harbored a bitter consciousness of having himself failed to achieve any epoch-making discovery in the science he tirelessly promulgated. Pais' account of the personal contradictions within the man makes an excellent counterpoint to Bird and Sherwin's American Prometheus (2005), the award-winning, full-dress biography of Oppenheimer in which the emphasis falls on the more public side of his life, the Manhattan Project and its aftermath. The best book on Oppie at IAS

There have been several good biographies of Oppenheimer in the past few years. As biographies the others are probably better. This book though has two real advantages over the others:

First, Abraham Pais was a physicist himself. He worked with Oppenheimer and knew all or most of the significant physicists involved with atomic energy during and after the war. His insights on the physics being done at the time is very insightful.

Second, Oppenheimer is most known for Los Alamos and the Manhattan Project. But after that, after he lost his security clearance Oppenheimer was head of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton. This is where Pais knew him and it is in this part of his life that this book excells.

Oppenheimer was an enigmatic person. He was certainly an accomplished physicist. Not perhaps the equal of the very best, but clearly on the first string. Oppenheimer's work in physics earned him what might be called an honorable mention in the history books. Oppenheimer's work as a manager of the project and as director of the institute required not brilliance in physics but managerial capabilities far beyond those exhibited by other physicists of the time (with the possible exception of Edward Teller).

Oppenheimer's expulsion from Government service over security issues was one of the travesties of the McCarthy era. It seems though that his subsequent work at the IAS gave him enough pleasure that he was not unhappy. He continued to work at the forefront of physics.

If you want to know more about Oppenheimer's life before and during the war, look to other books. If you want some insight into his later life and into the depth of his character, this is the best book I have found.

Not For The Non-Professional

While I generally agree with the authors of the reviews below that this book provides insight into Oppenheimer's character, the development of IAS, and the inner workings of the Manhattan Project, I did not find this biography helpful in understanding either Oppenheimer's scientific work or the wider scientific research in quantum theory in which he played a role. I took to reading the "science" chapters with my laptop, set to Wikipedia, at my side, because -- perhaps because he died before revising or expanding the chapters that he had completed -- Pais does not define, let alone explain, any of the concepts and theories underlying Oppenheimer's research, but merely summarizes those ideas as though he were addressing an audience of science professionals. While no scientist, I'm not a science illiterate. Yet I understood very few of the descriptions in this book of Oppenheimer's actual scientific work. Therefore, I'd recommend this bio to readers interested in learning more about Oppenheimer's life, the history of IAS and the birth of the atomic age, but not to those nonscientists who want to learn more about Oppenheimer's research.

Grade 2-6?As he did in Beast Feast (1994), On The Wing (1996), and In the Swim (1997, all Harcourt), Florian offers 21 short, inventive poems and paintings that create playful images of animals. Here, the subjects are arthropods such as the mayfly, praying mantis, hornet, black widow spider, and weevils. The verse form is as varied as the creatures presented. Shaped or pattern poems about the inchworm, whirligig beetles, and mound-building termites work particularly well. The words are arranged in pleasing patterns and the rhythms fit the characteristics of the subjects. The design adds to the overall appeal. Each selection is given its own page, allowing for the use of large type and plenty of glossy white space, and paired with a full-page watercolor with a neat border of white. These portraits build on the imaginatively integrated realistic and anthropomorphic images created in the text. A pure delight!

As a children's author myself, I look at a LOT of picture books each year. INSECTLOPEDIA was one I simply had to have. The poems and art are equally witty, and it seems to me the perfect gift book, to be enjoyed and appreciated by children (and adults) of all ages. Every time I show it to someone, we find something new to delight us in the art work. A wonderful book!

Great fun, even for kids who aren't "insect lovers"

This is a book of poems about insects. The poems are great; their content is funny and rhythmic. Through the poems we learn about the various insects. Some have very creative text formatting such as the inchworm; the text is shaped like a humped-up inchworm. The illustrations are very creative collages that are unique compared to most other children's books.
I began reading this when my first son was 2 years old and he loved the poems then and he loves them now. Neither of my children are otherwise very interested in reading about insects but this book captures their interest and they laugh hysterically at some of these poems. After reading these they have found some of the more unusual insects such as the walking stick outdoors and called it to my attention. We've owned the book for 3 years, every once in a while my now-5 year old will find it and get excitedly proclaim "we haven't read this in a long time" and begs me to read it again (and again and again).
Some of the insects featured are the inchworm, tick, walking stick, praying mantis, monarch butterfly, daddy long legs spider and army ants.
The poems are so much fun I don't mind reading the entire book two or three times in a row. A fun book to read to young children. This is good reading for just plain fun or to introduce poetry or to enhance learning about insects and nature.

Florian created a wonderful book of poems that captured the youthful joy and echantment of the insect world. Each poem is unique and the accompanying illustrations are whimsical and fun. Both parents and children will love this book.

Kat Goldin started to sell her designs and finished projects online in 2011. She made a strong impact in the online craft community and has sold over 300 finished designs. Her crochet workshops in her home in Alloa, Scotland sell out within days of being announced. Her popular blog slugsontherefrigerator has won the UK’s MADS 2012 Blog of the Year and Best Blog Photography awards. Kat is originally from America and currently lives in Scotland with her husband and three children.

A must-have for the beginner who wants to make things that will be worn

It is hard to describe this book objectively, because I have followed the journey of its genesis from the very first Facebook double-dare to design a dinosaur hat. I have envied Kat Goldin's children's crochet and knitwear since our firstborn boys were toddlers. It was Kat Goldin's amazingly thoughtful, wearable and fun children's designs that inspired me to learn to crochet in the first place. I helped test her first patterns and have made her designs as baby gifts in my very beginner crochet hand. They were warmly received because Kat's designs are beginner-friendly and accommodate the odd stash yarn combinations, skew seams and miscounted stitches of the busy, novice, crochet-while-nursing-the-baby Real People who make them.

As a reader of Kat's blog, Slugs on the Refrigerator, since its inception, I have followed this book through the deadline-fueled haze of creating these designs, caught sneak-peeks of the contents, watched Kat Molesworth's preview video of the book on YouTube, and have seen countless other online friends in the UK, Europe and Downunder bring her designs to life on children whose names I know. I see photos of Kat's children in the book and remember the anguish of infertility that came before one, and the shock of unexpected fertility that preempted another. My connection to this book is most certainly emotional. However, that emotional connection forged largely in the online domain, is not what has brought this book to my bookshelf on the day of it's US release.

I didn't buy this book because I like Kat and I want her to do well, although I most certainly do. Kat's career as a crochet and knit wear designer has a kind of momentum that cannot be derailed by the success or otherwise of her debut book in her homeland. I bought this book because I know, from cutting my crochet teeth on her early designs, that Kat's patterns are things I can make. I spend hours scouring Ravelry, admiring designs, looking at other people's projects to see if they turn out as well as the designer's photos, and frequently download a pattern to assess if it is makeable by me. I have tried crocheting slippers, and after creating the flat sole, found the construction of the upper to be utterly incomprehensible. However, I have never failed at making a Kat Goldin design I set my heart on. Kat anticipated the struggles of the novice, included thoughtful direction and if you really come unstuck, she will answer your questions via email or the contact form on her blog.

I will freely admit that I find the Mermaid Tail to be quite daunting. I am quite nervous to tackle the cable on the Wolf Cardigan, but I have salivated over that cardigan and owned the yarn to make it for months already. I know I can create that cardigan in stitches I can do, leaving out the ones that are new to me. However, Kat's design, and Rachel's wooden buttons on the ones Kat's boys wear in the book, call out to me and tell me that I CAN do it, and inspire me to stretch my crochet skills and TRY. I might one day even graduate beyond Kat Goldin's designs, but if and when I do, it will be because Kat has taken me on that journey, step-by-step, carefully constructing designs that inspire the beginner, stretching their skills in bite-size chunks, building confidence and raising overall skill.

The main reason that this book now resides inside my crochet bag, however, is because it is brim-full of things I can make now, with a stitch repertoire I can count on one hand, that will make my boys the envy of people we meet in the park this Fall and fill the stockings of friends and loved ones this Christmas. I might even be giving away some of the quicker-to-make items to kids on the Baltimore City bus, because that's where I do most of my crocheting.

What a find!

I love this book. I mean, I really, really, love this book! I rarely give a book a perfect score, but this one deserves it. Why? It is so clever!! I would make just about anything in the book as the patterns are playful, cute, and any child would love them! I cannot wait until cooler weather to make the little wraparound shawl for my baby daughter - it has a very "Outlander" look about it.
