This books is full of information for entrepreneurs who have new businesses. It is smartly written and current. It is a good read. It is full of data on legal issues, how to be a good leader, and strategies for running a good business. I am enjoying reading it.

First of all, I'm not an entrepreneur (I can barely spell the word)--but some of my best friends are entrepreneurs. Lately, I've been pondering the entrepreneurial side of nonprofit organizations, churches and businesses.

You know the drill: A gifted, entrepreneurial nonprofit or church leader returns from his mountaintop meeting with God. He has a new vision. He casts the vision. He recruits more staff. He inspires major donors. He leaps tall buildings.

He falls flat on his face.

What's the deal here? Well, first of all, entrepreneurs are very different animals. In this masterpiece, the leading textbook on entrepreneurship worldwide, Robert D. Hisrich defines an entrepreneur as "an individual who takes initiative to bundle resources in innovative ways and is willing to bear the risk and/or uncertainty to act."

Churches and ministries, especially, desperately need initiative and innovation. Yet for all the talk and enthusiasm for entrepreneurship in the marketplace, those who exercise their entrepreneurial gifts in nonprofit organizations or churches are regularly misunderstood and often marginalized. Why?

Along with co-authors Michael P. Peters and Dean A. Shepherd, Hisrich has created perhaps the most comprehensive study ever of entrepreneurial men and women. In this remarkable 602-page book, filled with fascinating sidebar profiles of in-the-trenches entrepreneurs, the authors uncover every entrepreneurial stone ever imagined and conclude their work with 17 case studies covering 120 pages from the Rug Bug Corporation to "Mamma Mia: The Little Show That Could!"

Hisrich cites a study by Howard Stevenson, a Harvard University professor, that says that "entrepreneurship represents a mode of managing an existing firm that is distinct from traditional management in terms of eight dimensions: (1) strategic orientation, (2) commitment to opportunity, (3) commitment of resources, (4) control of resources, (5) management structure, (6) reward philosophy, (7) growth orientation, and (8) entrepreneurial culture."

Don't let the "textbook" label scare you off. A good book on entrepreneurship must itself be entrepreneurial--and this one is. On page 49, Table 2.2 lists 20 continuums (rate your organization from 1 to 10) on how entrepreneurially your organization is managed. Example: "Our employees are evaluated and compensated based on their responsibilities" scores a one. At the other end, "Our employees are evaluated and compensated based on the value they add to the firm," rates a 10.

About the Author
Chris Carthern (CCNP, CISSP) is a senior network engineer for the United States Department of Defense. He is responsible for analyzing, designing, installing, configuring, maintaining, and repairing of Cisco network infrastructure and application components and for training and mentoring junior network engineers and preparing them for Cisco CCNP and CISSP certification exams. Carthern took his BS (honors) in computer science from Morehouse College and his MS in system engineering from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). He holds the following certifications: Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), CompTIA Security+, Brocade Certified Network Professional (BNCP), and ITIL v3.

Fascinating book!

To see a straight science guy, highly accomplished in his field, delve into metaphysics to answer the eternal questions of humanity is sooo unusual. So few have the cojones to do something like this. Most feel like a move like this would kill their career and reputation. I'm only a quarter of the way through this book, and absolutely love it. I have studied sacred geometry, and Ernst bases his quest on the geometry of the human eye. I'll just say that this study led him on an astounding journey of discovery.
Ernst writes in a straightforward manner, easily understood in an unobstructed flow of action and idea. I recommend this enthusiastically for all ages. It is very mentally stimulating and satisfying.

Good book. What I found weak was the amount ...

Good book. What I found weak was the amount and type of references used. The author mirror his conclusions on mainly two references: Blavatsky, Roerich and Lobsang Rampa. Even though I like these authors, the community has some strong opinions about them. This puts his book in the same place as those. If his thesis is true, his experience searching for the meaning of was revealing.

Cookie-Cuttering Organizational Culture into a One-Size-Fits-All Pyramid of Buzz-Word Ubiquity.

• Executive Summary
This is a review of Change the Culture, Change the Game: The Breakthrough Strategy for Energizing Your Organization and Creating Accountability for Results, by Roger Connors and Tom Smith. The target audience of the book is business professionals interested in developing a culture of accountability within an organization. In my opinion the strengths of this book are few, though conceptually the authors propose a foundational, though rudimentary, structure describing how one might go about inciting cultural change. That said, there are too many weaknesses to justify suffering through the long winded “real-life” examples that compose the bulk of most chapters; specifically the outdated concepts that are the core of the material presented, the oversimplification of the information’s utility as applicable to all business cultures, and the incessant lists, methods and systems the authors advertise as essential to the process of instilling a culture of accountability. There are so many better choices in this field of study that I cannot comfortably recommend the book; not even as foundational reference material.

• Who is the book written for?

The book is written in such a way that makes me suspect that the authors were providing high level leaders something to distribute among their subordinate managers as required reading when approaching the topic of change management through cultural development. Therefore, I was not surprised at the many customer reviews stating that they were, in fact, encouraged by a manager or boss to give it a read and explain the large brush strokes to their direct reports and teams. Of course, the publishing company, hoping to sell a copy to every business person on the planet, touts it as useful material to the everyman business person who desires to instill the virtue of accountability in the souls of their organizations.

• Specific Strengths of the Book

I believe that Change the Culture, Change the Game would be best suited as an introductory read for managers within an organization that has become so stagnant in their culture that they require immediate and drastic alterations to abate disaster. It presents some basic concepts and fills in the blanks with descriptive, though, as previously stated, long winded, allegory that fail to construct a complete plan of action. This being the case, one would expect that it might spark an interest in some of its audience and encourage them to look deeper into the topics presented, thereby becoming the initial stepping stone that might provide a manager the tools necessary to understand and effect real change in an organization’s culture.

• Specific Weaknesses of the Book

The material presented is dated, and as far from the forefront in the field of organizational behavior as VHS tape is to media delivery methodology. I was extremely disappointed to find that the 2012 edition didn’t add fundamentally to the original printing of the book in 2001, even though so much progress has been made in this field in the past decade. I very much dislike books that present themselves as ‘the’ authority on a topic, promising innovative techniques and cutting edge strategic insights, but deliver nothing more than a regurgitation of outmoded information. I found the recommendations of the authors to be elementary, effectively cookie-cuttering something as complex and unique as an organization’s corporate culture into a one-size-fits-all pyramid of buzz-word ubiquity.

• What Other Reviewers Have Said for and Against the Book and Your Reply

As one would expect, the majority of reviews on Amazon.com are generally positive, some of which appear to be contrived by those who stood to benefit from book sales. However, I did notice that in many of the positive reviews, my sentiments were echoed in part or in their entirety, but for whatever reason, the reviewer still gave the book the coveted 5 star rating. The 1 star ratings seemed more sincere and in line with my own experience. The endorsements pages within the book itself ~ 4 pages of praise from renowned business leaders and industry heavy hitters comprise the first 4 pages of the text~ are all resoundingly positive and recommend it highly as a must read. Then again the publisher wouldn’t have been doing a very good job of marketing the product had they used anything but the shiny polished ones, therefore I discount them wholeheartedly. And finally, the initial 2001 edition received recognition as both a New York Times and Wall Street Journal Best Seller. Frankly, way back then, I might have personally helped them achieve that standing.

• Recommendations
Though I would not recommend this particular book, I feel that this is a continuously evolving and exciting field of study with value and practical application to every organization, large and small. Therefore, I might suggest that people start where I did in my journey of behavioral discovery, and read anything written by John Kotter; starting with the revamped edition of Leading Change, while being sure not to miss The Heart of Change: Real-Life Stories of How People Change Their Organizations, or Our Iceberg Is Melting: Changing and Succeeding under Any Conditions all of which available on Amazon.com. Save a tree and buy them used.

Truth is simple and we have heard it more than once, not what is counts, what it looks like counts. And culture is part of look and feel inside and out. Even more, it duplicates itself, it spreads and grows.

As any growing force, culture needs guidance. Change the culture, change the game gives valuable insights how to direct the culture in an organisation, how to mobilize your people for the good. It's a must hear (and read) when you lead a team or organisation and it challenges you to proceed.

Great work, highly recommended for leaders in any field. Give your team the force of a direction and they'll love it.

Simply astounding and mind boggling !

My last two weeks have been most stimulating as I finished this remarkable series. From the first book, "Neverness" to "The Broken God" to "The Wild" and finally "War in Heaven", I just could not put the series down. Yes there are times when Zindell tend to be repetitive in his philosophical views but the intensity of the story and characters more than makes up for it. "Neverness" is simply exquisite with spectacular world building and intriguing characters. The protagonist, Mallory, a brilliant and complex personality is definitely one sci-fi character I will remember. "The Broken God" is simply profound though at times Zindell tends to be overboard with his philosophical views. At first I miss Mallory's narration as the first person. However by the middle of "The Broken God", I found myself engrossed with Danlo's fate and liking this protagonist immensely. From the negative reviews of "The Broken God", I perceive that some readers have stopped reading the series due to the slow pace of "The Broken God". That is a real pity because no sci-fi die-heart should miss "The Wild". Here Zindell displays his remarkable world building skills and vivid imagination once again. The pace here is fast and I found myself imprisoned by Danlo's adventures. "War in Heaven" is equally though provoking and captivating. Danlo's loss here is intensely written and I found myself moved to tears. "War in Heaven" is a sastisfying conclusion to the series as Danlo completes his soul searching and finally "sees" his role in the universe or should I say universes. As usual with any great stories, I am sad that the end comes too quickly. I will miss Danlo, Mallory, Soli, Bardo and the Solid State Entity but am glad to have discovered Zindell's world. I am please to add Zindell to my list of must read writers and look forward to reading his new fantasy series. It is a pity that this brilliant writer is not more widely recognized.

Not "Neverness"

David Zindell's first novel in this series, "Neverness," is nothing short of astounding. His imagination - and the incredibly rich world that has sprung forth from it - is boundless. But "War in Heaven," the fourth and final book in the "Requiem for Homo Sapiens" series, does not match up to the breathtaking "Neverness," nor even to its own promising beginning.
At the start of this book, the protagonist Danlo wi Soli Ringess has just returned from a perilous mission. His goal was to convince a well-meaning but badly misguided religious order (the "Architects") to change its doctrine of advocating endless procreation - a doctrine which is slowly but surely killing the galaxy. Danlo is successful, but at a price: a splinter group (the "Iviomils") determined to preserve the old ways has broken off & threatens terrible violence.
Danlo, back at "home," finds himself not in the city of Neverness but in Lightstone, a new city on a new planet. Danlo's enlightened academic Order has created a mirror of itself on a distant, hidden planet as a hedge against the possible destruction of Icefall, where Neverness and the original Order are located. Soon, we find out, a new schism is brewing between the new & old Orders, with religion (this time, a controversial new faith called "Ringism" has made inroads into the old Order) again being the cause.
And finally we learn that even the galaxy's gods are at war. A super-entity called the Silicon God has slain two of his kind, and the gods who oppose him are banding together to stop him.
In short, as the title rather explosively proclaims, there is war in heaven.
But we get to see little of it. The Architects and Iviomils barely appear for the rest of the book, and except for a couple of oblique references, the gods don't show up at all. The two academic Orders do fight a pair of bloody, spectacular space battles, but nearly all of the "action" (such as it is) is centered on Neverness. Danlo (who, as an ambassador to Neverness, is utterly unable to prevent the impending war) spends hundreds of pages in a virtual holding pattern - he does almost nothing except bide time while hatching a new plan.
I won't reveal any more of the plot. I will say that the book has its merits - Zindell's world is still intensely interesting, and he still has some new, mind-bending ideas to share. (How about an ethereal ecosystem that thrives in the near-vacuum at the edge of space, or a perverse, megalomaniacal god intent on consuming all the matter and energy in the universe?)
Just expect some disappointment after the first 150 pages, but enjoy the ride anyway.

STILL answering questions with questions

Danlo alas keeps this sporadically annoying habit that's so much a part of his nature throughout what I think is probably the last in the series of books that began with Neverness (for everyone but Danlo) or The Broken God (for Danlo himself). While the last book was a strange, yet oddly intoxicating mixture of philosophy and SF, it lacked the intrinsic cohension that the first book had somehow managed to convey, maybe because of the sublime setting of the city of Neverness, about the finest and best detailed futuristic city in all of SF. Here, after a brief start, we're back in Neverness as Danlo tries to keep war from breaking out and tries, to various degrees of success, to also piece together all the fragments of problems he's either been involved in or created. Zindell sets up quite the dilemma for all the protagonists, not only has the Order of Pilots fragmented and is threatening to fight the other (one part's in exile, the other part is falling sway to a new religion started by Danlo's former best friend and based on the fact that his father might have become a god), the Warrior-Poets are trying to kill anyone who might become a god, Neverness is falling into riots as the Ringists are killing all the nonbelievers. Danlo has never seemed more human and less human here, his very much tries to keep to his vow not to harm anyone and for the most part keeps it, but he's sorely tempted otherwise. He runs into old friends and enemies and enemies who used to be friends (yeah, we're talking to you, Hanuman). This is the most brutal of the three books and Danlo doesn't have an easy time of things, however, as exhilerating as it is to have him succeed, the efforts almost make him seem superhuman and as the book winds to a close, you wonder if ANYTHING can stop this guy. Some points of the book also fall prey to Philosopy Syndrome, where Zindell drowns you in pretty prose depicting Danlo debating some inner struggle, which while great to read and has some absolutely beautiful writing, makes you want to shout at the book "Get on with it already!". But I can't say I didn't like this book, heck, I more than just liked it, this was a satisfying end to the cycle that builds on what came before and takes it to new places. Danlo is one of the best characters to appear in the last decade, and the rest of the people are all lovingly detailed, no one is all good, no one is all bad, everyone has reasons and motivations, some you agree with, some you don't. The clarity and scope of Zindell's ideas, enough to make you think without making your head hurt, are fascinating and his attention to detail, both in dialogue and description and philosophy, will make you want to read the entire series again and again. Even with Danlo's annoying question habit, this has to rank as one of the finest series of the last couple of years, without a doubt.
