Good book, but not a bible

This book is a good way to get familiar with online social tools. The author covers ways to use email, social networking tools and publishing tools. He has good information about establishing some goals and determining a strategy for meeting the goals. He also has a lot of useful references if you want to get more familiar with a particular topic.

I only gave it three stars for the following reasons:
- Too much coverage of the history of the internet, email, and web pages. If I was interested in that, I'd get a book on the history of the internet, email, and web pages.
- Misinformation on some tools, and missing information about other tools. For instance, the author mentions Joomla, a content management system that can be used to create websites and blogs. He mentions it in a way that may mislead people as to its uses when he states that it can pair with any number of applications. It might work with other applications, but that may require coding skills or money to pay someone to make them work together. He also ignores the multitude of other open source content management systems that are out there.
- A serious amount of repetition in sections one and two. A lot of what is stated in the second section is already in the first, so it added a few hundred pages without saying a whole lot.

This is a good book. It's less complete than the title suggests.

A Comprehensive Social Media Resource

Ask a hundred people what "social media" is, and you may get a hundred different definitions. Frankly, social media doesn't just connect people--it baffles them, too. The authors of "The Social Media Bible," however, have made a considerable attempt at creating a resource that helps readers gain an overall understanding of the social media "ecosystem" (to put it in the authors' terms) and how the social media phenomenon relates to business.

First, I think it's in order to discuss what this tome covers. Part I, Background Basics and Tactics, comprises the first 23 chapters. This section of the book defines social media, explains the different types of social media, and helps you understand why it's important. You get coverage here of everything from social networks to microblogging to virtual worlds. If you've read other books about social media, you may already be familiar with some of this content. If you're brand new to social media, you'll find it especially helpful.

Part II, Tools, comprises chapters 24-38 and revisits the different categories of social media, focusing on current popular tools. The authors discuss each tool, focusing on who should use them and why; you'll even find some more technical information in these chapters. Although I appreciated the broad look at all the different types of the social media, I felt that the sections could have gone into more detail. However, you could easily write an entire book on each type of social media presented, so the authors clearly had to limit coverage of each type of social media resource.

Part III, Strategy, includes the final chapters of 39-43 and offers some excellent advice on how to apply everything learned in the book. I appreciated the bits of advice spread throughout as well as the cohesive strategies presented. I especially found the chapter "The Four Pillars of Social Media Strategy" helpful, which discusses how a social media strategy should have goals of communication, collaboration, education, and entertainment.

Although some of the principles in this book will endure, much of the descriptions for current social media tools will quickly go out of date (as some already have). However, the authors clearly recognized this and intended it to be a timely book. If you're new to the concept of social media and seeking how to apply social media to your business, the "Social Media Bible" is a great resource. If you're already familiar with using social media, you may find yourself skipping some of the basic information in the book. Overall, I believe there is wisdom for everyone to find in this useful guide--the kind of wisdom that will help you to give new life to your company's online marketing efforts in the social media world.

This book is an 800-pound guerilla when it comes to social media marketing. Four thumbs up!

Great book! Loved it! It's huge and heavy and not particularly pricey. I found it to be well organized and well written. And it was certainly packed to the gills with content. There are 43 chapters split into three different sections: (1) Background basics & tactics, (2) Tools, & (3) Strategy. The chapters in the first part provide an introduction and framework regarding the book. The numerous chapters in the second part cover 100+ social media tools. And the last five or six chapters in the third part can help you do an audit of the social media marketing your company does (or doesn't do).

The book is comprehensive. I haven't seen a book that covers so much and in such depth on the topic of social media marketing (or Internet Marketing). There were a ton of "Expert Insights" sprinkled throughout the text that really made the book shine. And each chapter ended with three summaries: (1) Commandments, (2) Conclusion, & (3) Readings & Resources. Each were well done. In particular the Readings & Resources for each chapter were better than most books have at the end of an entire book. 6 stars!

A great book

Mr. Simburger has written an outstanding book. I do want to correct a couple of points in the main review. the book does not cover all of Southern California rail. In particular, it has relatively little information about the Coaster [Oceanside- San Diego] or the San Diego Trolley. It also does not talk much about intercity Amtrak in the Inland Empire and the Mojave Desert. The bus maps are a little hard to read, and Mr. Simburger could use an editor to correct some typos but this is an outstanding well researched reference. I never travel anywhere on the Metrolink without reading up the relevant chapters in this book first.

Includes the Metrolink commuter rail lines between Los Angeles and cities such as Oceanside, and the heavy rail Los Angeles Metro Rail subway system. I highly recommended this book for rail transit fans, like me.

Endocrine "Secrets"

Overall this is a useful book to provide a rapid overview about practical aspects of general endocrinology. It is a great starting point for internal medicine residents and fellows. "Secrets" may not be the right word: it is a good overview of essential practical knowledge about pathophysiology, diagnostic approaches and therapeutic modalities.
The chapters are somewhat uneven in terms of depth: some are quite detailed (e.g. diabetes in pregnancy), others would warrant slightly more detail and updating (as well as elimination of mostly minor errors that could probably be easily be eliminated by a reading by peers).
While this has nothing to do with the content, one very weak point is the size of the print, which is way too small! Many will need a magnifying glass to read the text. The publisher would be well advised to fix this - otherwise it is not worth buying future versions of this book or other "secrets".

I chose this rating because it's a very practical book and updated. It has very concise summaries of the different endocrine pathologies , it is very easy to read with the main questions we want to be answered. It is not a book to go deeper into a subject but that is not the objective of the book. I really recomend it.

A superb study

This is the English publication of Ratzinger's second doctoral dissertation. It's topic is clear from the title but Ratzinger focuses on two sub-topics of great interest: Bonaventure's embrace of the medieval belief that St. Francis ushered in the eschaton and Bonaventure's so-called Augustinian tradition. Both are carefully discussed in light of Bonaventure's theology of history, which is centered primarily around Christ being the pivot of history rather than its end. It is a refreshing piece of the Ratzinger corpus.

The Seeds of a Master's Thought

This text is most definitely a "must read" for anyone who is seriously interested in the theological background of Pope Benedict XVI (henceforth referred to under his published name for this title, Joseph Ratzinger). In many ways, it was most excellent for me to read this text after having read a variety of titles by Ratzinger. Having had a decent background in his various later works, it was very easy to detect where his thought was born in his dissertation studies. Primarily, these become visible in the categories of eschatology, revelation, and Love.

In this essay, Ratzinger primarily investigates the eschatological thought of Saint Bonaventure, placing the aforementioned topics into relation with the thought of the Seraphic Doctor. The eschatological development of Bonaventure with respect to the Franciscan order is compared with those of his day, particularly Joachim of Fiore who had an eschatological outlook which was more progressive and historically-directed than even that of Bonaventure. It is here that we see Ratzinger's personal development of the realization of Christ as the midpoint of history by means of Bonaventure's work. Additionally, he appropriates the conceptual framework of revelation which was developed by the Seraphic Doctor (although it would be more appropriate to refer to this as a "theology of revelations"). Finally, while looking at the dialogue (and polemics) between Bonaventure and the Aristotelians of his day (including, to a degree, the Thomistic school of thought), one is able to see the seeds which Bonaventure sowed into Ratzinger's mind, reflecting on the temporary character of scholastic/philosophical/rational theology which makes it subservient to full supra-intellectual Love of God.

As a whole, the text remains a great contribution to the overall corpus of material available about Bonaventure's thought on eschatology and the role of the Franciscan order therein. However, I think that the most profitable reading of this text will ascertain those latent predispositions in Ratzinger's work which remained with him through the years. In order to understand the overall theological vision of Pope Benedict XVI, this text is fundamental for seeing the foundational lenses through which the master views the issues of eschatology, revelation, and Love.

Interesting insights into Ratzinger's thought

Former Cardinal Ratzinger, now the current Pope, has experienced an interesting if not meteoric rise in the senior ranks of the Catholic Church. By virtue of his office, it is essential for every serious Catholic to understand Ratzinger's theological thought and the basis for his ideas and pronouncements.

This early work on the historical theology of St Bonaventure helps give one some understanding of Ratzinger's often deeply conservative stance on many issues. Indeed Ratzinger might be said to stand in the Augustinian tradition of the Church, while Pope John Paul II was firmly in the tradition of Aquinas. Ratzinger's monograph focuses then on how Bonaventure thought about history and where the history of the world was leading, and what this meant for the Church, from the time of Adam to the final eschaton at the Last Judgement.

While Raztinger writes this book mostly with academic theologians in mind, the non-theologian can get useful insights into the theological orientation of his later works and stances as the Prefect for the 'Inquisition' or Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith.

About the Author
Cecil Scott "C.S." Forester was the pen name of Cecil Louis Troughton Smith (27 August 1899 - 2 April 1966), an English novelist who rose to fame with tales of naval warfare. His most notable works were the 12-book Horatio Hornblower series, depicting a Royal Navy officer during the Napoleonic era, and "The African Queen" (1935; filmed in 1951 by John Huston). His novels "A Ship of the Line" and "Flying Colours" were jointly awarded the 1938 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction.

The true Royal Navy by an acute observer

C.S. Forester, perhaps best known for his HORNBLOWER series, wrote three iconic books about modern warfare: THE SHIP, THE GUN and THE GENERAL. But of the three THE SHIP stands out as particularly effective.
The book traces a sea battle fought by a British light cruiser in WWII under difficult circumstances. Forester used a simple story-telling device: he picks disparate men of varied ranks and traces their lives as they do their jobs and wrestle with war at sea. War at sea may not seem to the casual observer to have the immediacy of air and land war, but it demands just as much skill, courage and determination as any other form.
THE SHIP was written in 1943 but remains eminently readable to this day. It has aged well. Its authenticity is extraordinary, and provides excellent insights into the men, the ships and their armor. Having served in the Royal Navy, I can vouch for the quality and integrity of the work.
If a reader only knew of HORNBLOWER, he or she might not be aware of Forester's other works. He was an outstanding writer who richly deserved the encomia he received, and THE SHIP is right up there in the top level of his achievements.

The Naval War Vessel as an Organism

If you're used to Forester's more character driven novels, specifically the Hornblower series as opposed to books like 'The Gun' you may be a bit put off by this. You need to realize that the people are not the characters here, the Ship itself is.

This is the story of a British supply convoy to Malta during WW2 which is attacked by an Italian force of far superior strength. The convoy must get through, but the Italians have two battleships, several destroyers, and various other ships while the British fighting force consists of only six destroyers and some light cruisers (and all the supply vessels as an albatross around their necks). A light cruiser or destroyer is merely an annoying little dog to a battleship, so strategy is called for.

The central character of this book is the light cruiser Artemis of Her Majesty's Royal Navy. It has a complement of several hundred, but the conceit here is that Forester treats them as cells or organs in the body of the ship. A typical chapter will involve a focus on some function on the ship (the Captain, the navigator, the chief engineer, all the way down to sailors doing tedious and seemingly trivial but necessary work). You'll be given the back story of the life of the man who performs that task and a fairly detailed summary of the job involved - Forester actually spent time on a naval ship doing research for this.

Now you are either going to find it fascinating to see how all these men of varied backgrounds and talents mesh together into a coherent organism or it's going to drive you crazy when Forester takes a several page diversion into the life of a Torpedo Gunner's Mate in the thick of a heated naval battle. At one point when the Artemis is in dire peril he even takes half a dozen pages on how a shell is made and the path it takes to reach a gun. The entire book takes place over the course of only a few hours, but the the back story and detail stretch it out substantially. I appreciated the approach, but be warned not to get too attached to the people - the very point of the book is that they're all important, but bit players. You may never see them again or they may die horribly. You can't expect substantial character growth as in the Hornblower novels, though there's one character who achieves some; the Captain's secretary is the only man in here who's really 'human'.

Also, as you might expect from a book written during WW2 it's a bit effusive about how well trained and brave all the British soldiers are, but the British /were/ extraordinarily brave during WW2 and in the spirit of the book I'm willing to believe that everyone on the Artemis did their job perfectly, even though Forester's books usually allow mens' foibles more severe consequences. Just let yourself sink into the book and you'll be turning the last page before you know it.

A Great Perspective on the importance of doing every job well...

The book starts with the story of the officer who's task is to feed an entire ship's crew while they are at action stations. That's an unusual perspective, but you soon realize how important this job is if the ship is going to win the battle it's about to engage in. The book is filled with the stories of men of every rank and the challenges they face of doing their duty during the fight. The stories range from the Captain, who must anticipate the enemies actions and instantly make critical decisions to an ammunition handler who's only task is to move the shells from one point to another. Every man's job is critical to the overall effort and it's both surprising & uplifting to see who fate has called upon to be a hero. I also learned a lot about the naval tactics of the time. The ships in this story did not have radar and it was interesting to learn how they interacted and how smokescreens were used during a battle.

Overall, this book is a chronicle of shipboard life, a study of naval tactics and a lesson in teamwork all seamlessly blended together into a great action story.

Paul Leinwand is Global Managing Director, Capabilities-Driven Strategy and Growth, with Strategy&, PwC’s strategy consulting business. Cesare Mainardi is the former CEO of Booz & Company and Strategy&. How and why getting strategy and execution in cohesive alignment is a worthwhile legacy for any leader in any enterprise

Those who have read Cut Costs + Grow Stronger (2009) and/or The Essential Advantage (2011) already know that Paul Leinwand and Cesare Mainardi are among the most insightful business thinkers now publishing books and articles that provide information, insights, and counsel of incalculable value to senior-level executives as well as to those who aspire to reach that level. That said, I think Strategy That Works (written with Art Kleiner) is their most important work thus far. Why? Because I think it will have a wider and deeper impact on any organization, whatever its size and nature may be.

Just as Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert Sutton focus on the “knowing-doing gap,” Leinwand and Mainardi focus on another, equally important gap. As they explain, “There is a significant and unnecessary gap between strategy and execution: a lack of connection between where the enterprise aims to go and what it can accomplish. We have met many leaders who understand this problem, but very few who know how to overcome it…Some business leaders try to close the gap on the strategy side, looking for a better market position. Others double down on execution, improving their methods and practices. Despite their efforts, both groups struggle to achieve consistent success.” Alas, few companies have solved this problem. I agree with Leinwand and Mainardi that the problem cannot be solved with conventional wisdom and I also agree with Albert Einstein: “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” Five acts of unconventional leadership are needed:

1. Instead of focusing on growth, commit to an identity: Differentiate and grow by being clear-minded about what you can do best
2. Instead of pursuing functional excellence, translate the strategic into everyday life: Build and connect the cross-functional capabilities that deliver your strategic intent
3. Instead of reorganizing to drive change, put your culture to work: Celebrate and leverage your cultural strengths
4. Instead of going lean, cut costs to grow stronger: Prune what doesn’t matter to invest more in what does
5. Instead of becoming agile and resilient, shape your future: Reimagine your capabilities, create demand, and realign your industry on your own terms

“The five acts of unconventional leadership take different forms in different companies, but there is a family resemblance across all of them. They are all critical to engendering management habits that keep strategy and execution closely integrated, so there is no gap between them. Together, they comprise a playbook for creating sustainable value.” All five are discussed in some detail (Pages 12-19).

Leinwand and Mainardi correctly stress the critical importance of organizational and operational coherence in terms of alignment among three strategic elements: “A value proposition that distinguishes a company from other companies (we sometimes call this a ‘way to play’ in the market); also, a system of distinctive capabilities that reinforce each other and enable the company to deliver on this value proposition; and, a chosen portfolio of products and services that all make use of those capabilities.”

Five practices of winning companies

Most companies fail to create a compelling strategy, or if they do have such a strategy they fail to put it into practice; however, a small number of companies naturally combine strategy and execution in everything they do. According to Paul Leinwand and Cesare Mainardi in this book, the products and services of these companies have an enviable position in the markets they care about, and the firms reliably deliver on their promises. They each have their own unique way of competing, but they all have one thing in common: their success is clearly related to the distinctive way they do things: their capabilities.

The book goes on to describe the distinctive capabilities of a number of firms which have achieved unusual success in their fields, including Apple, CEMEX, Danaher, Frito-Lay, Haier, IKEA, Inditex, Lego, Natura, Qualcomm, and Starbucks. Through analysing these and other companies, the authors have come up with the “five acts of unconventional leadership”, which are the practices enabling the companies to win repeatedly:

• Commit to an identity: resolve to act in a distinctive and clearly differentiated manner
• Translate the strategic into the everyday: structure your organisation around implementation of your strategy
• Put your culture to work: use your organisation’s cultural strengths to enhance your strategy
• Cut costs to grow stronger: be ruthless about funding only initiatives which further your strategy
• Shape the future: create your own terms for the future of your industry, rather than trying to follow anybody else

Although the authors have clearly done a lot of research, the principles which they have distilled appear to be hypotheses supported by case studies, rather than statistically verifiable results of empirical research. Nonetheless, the principles seem to me to have a ring of truth. In my opinion, anyone who is responsible for the strategy of a company which seeks to achieve significant success would gain a great deal of insight and inspiration from reading this book.

In Strategy That Works: How Winning Companies Close the Strategy-to-Execution Gap Paul Leinwand and Cesare Mainardi make a significant advance in management theory and practice, in this reviewer's opinion the most significant advance since Elliot Jaques concepts and practices were introduced. Both focus on execution of strategy by organizations. Jacques recognized that the judgements required to cope with different levels of complexity, essentially associated with the levels in the organizational hierarchy, require different mental processes and provided the means allowing the organization to link them. Leinwand and Mainardi identify value proposition and the distinct corporate capabilities required to deliver on the value proposition's promise and provide the means allowing the organization to link them.

Jaques took strategy as given while Leinwand and Mainardi provide guidance on how to develop it, making it executable through development of a supporting capabilities system, valuable by making it the source of competitive advantage hard to replicate by others, establishing a right to win. In so doing they provide new depth and intellectual rigor to development of the ubiquitous Business Canvas.

Both base their point of departure from recognition that organizations are social not mechanical in nature. Leinwand and Mainardi neatly extending the description of corporate culture from the way we do things around here to, " … the reservoir of behaviours thoughts feelings, value and mindsets shared by people in an enterprise."

To not read their book is to choose to increase your risk of failing, to avoid the challenge they pose, transform your company from an army to an elite special forces organization. Take five minutes and read the estimable Robert Morris' Amazon review to glimpse how Leinwand and Mainardi do it

This Book Is Amazing

I picked up Exploring Auras and could not put it down. There is no other book with this information anywhere. This book has everything any healing practitioner would need for their clients to heal and cleanse their energy field. Shumsky has obviously experienced all the anomalies in the auric field first-hand and has found easy, universal, repeatable ways to heal them. I highly recommend this book to help any psychic sponge or overly sensitive person to take control of their life. And to help any person who is plagued with problems originating in their own mind or in the environment. With this book anyone can heal the mind, body, and environment by working with the human energy field. I love the illustrations. They helped me understand many of my own experiences and those of my clients. I also loved Shumsky's other books, Exploring Chakras, Exploring Meditation, and Divine Revelation.

This is probably Susan G. Shumsky's best book yet. It teaches dozens of incredibly effective healing affirmations and other techniques for cleansing the human energy field, as well as the mind, emotions, and environment. These methods are extremely effective, and results are instantaneous. Anyone who has trouble picking up undesirable energy from the environment will greatly benefit from this book. Also, the book teaches how to measure the energy field and how to increase its energy. As a person troubled with energy vampires, this book has been a Godsend for me, and I know it will also benefit you.
