About the Author
Born at the turn of the century, W. E. Butler studied in India among Hindu spiritual teachers and with the well-known mystic Annie Besant. In England, he worked closely with Dion Fortune in the Society of the Inner Light. Butler is the author of numerous works, including How to Read the Aura and Practice Psychometry, Telepathy, and Clairvoyance. At Butler's request, Lords of Light was edited from his Ibis Fraternity lectures by his longtime student and friend, M.A. Geikie.

True Initiation in the Western Mysteries

Excellent! This is one of the best, if not THE best, book on the Western Mysteries that I have ever read ( and believe me I have read a LOT in 30+ years) Mr. Butler's style of writing is so easy to understand and follow. The author is, in my opinion, one of the best teachers in the Mysteries that I know of. It is a great lose that he has passed on so soon. The chapters on "The Western Tradition - The Withdrawn Order - Woven Paces and Waving Hands" or very informative and enlightening. There are five chapters on "Training the Personality" which are priceless! Everyone who is searching to "Know Thyself" should read and study this over and over again. Also, there is a "Questions and Answers" at the end of each chapter which helps to clarify some of the points made in the lectures. This is a wonderful book and I would recommend it to all.

A True Classic

I think this is one of my all time favorite books on the Western Mystery Tradition. Mr. Butler's unassuming tone and incredible wealth of knowledge make this an important stepping stone in understanding the mysterious. As a person you will fall in love with his demeanor; as a teacher you will be in awe of his skills. This is one you won't be disappointed with.

Must BUY!

I have to agree with the other reviewer. This is indeed a true classic and worth keeping in your library. The tone of these Lectures which he gave at the Ibis Fraternity in Devon England just 6 months before he left this world, is unasuming and self deprecating. There is so much wisdom in his words that it is precious worth reading and reading again.This is definitely a must buy

About the Author
Phyllis Reid, MSW, CPP is a Clinical Social Worker who works as a Psychotherapist with adults, children and families in various inner city schools and communities in Miami for over a decade. She holds a masters degree in social work, bachelor degrees in Psychology, Behavioral Sciences and is a trained Traumatologist. She is a strong proponent of cultural diversity, something she states is as natural to her as the skin that covers her body. She attributes this to being born and raised in her diverse cultural and ethnic island home of Jamaica, with its motto, Out of Many One People. Miami s multi-cultural make up was one of the reasons she decided to reside there for over thirty five years and continues to serve its diverse population.

Powerful Positive Message

As I prepared myself to read this book, I was under the assumption that it was "just a children's book", but as I began reading, I realized that this book was backed by a powerful message that would speak volumes about the author and it would relate to people of all walks of life. A message about a group of friends "brothers and sisters", that share their world, and their view of how its all relative, while enjoying a day out at the park, you learn that these children are full of faith and love, and have come to share their strong moral values by empowering another group who could benefit from their beliefs and positivity. The book brings everything of the world together and puts unity into focus. One Diverse Universe is an amazing read, with beautiful, colorful and vivid images and graphics, that appeal to the senses and imagination. The Puzzle that isn't complete without each individual unique piece, we come together, problem solving, analytic thinking, imagination, inspiration, beauty and faith, this book has a wide combination of positive aspects that anyone reading it can walk away feeling at peace.
Moral of the story: "Accept, respect, spread peace and love..." and "the answer is one, oneness; we are all one, one God, one universe, one world, one family of man." Very enjoyable read.

Great Teaching Tool

This book has an amazing outlook on bringing everyone together. With small children teaching the lesson, This is a great way for children to connect with them and see the world as they do. For me and my children this helps bring it to life.
This book also is a great jumping off board to talk to your children about the world being one place and we are all connected. My children learned so much as did I about the greater good and understanding of Gods plan for us to live in harmony as a One.

I recommend this book to all parents of school aged kids. It will help them understand that we are one in this big world and should take care of each other.

Ronald B. McKerrow's An Introduction to Bibliography for Literary Students has been the classic manual on bibliography, showing how the transmission of texts might be affected by the processes of printing, but he concentrated almost exclusively on "Elizabethan" printing - the period from 1560 to 1660. However, in recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the textual problems of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, and, although McKerrow covered the period up to 1800, he did not describe the technology of the machine-press period. Gaskell incorporates work done since McKerrow's day on the history of the printing technology of the hand-press period, and he breaks new ground by providing a general description of the printing practices of the machine-press period. Little has been previously published about the techniques and routines of nineteenth- and twentieth-century book production, making this book essential to students of literature, scholars, printing historians, librarians, and booklovers.

Incredibly Specialized Tome Not for Everyone

Gaskell (as it is known) was the textbook I used at UCLA for an Analytical Bibliography class which was a prerequisite for a class on Handpress Printing. It's not for wimps (UCLA, the Analytical Bib class, OR this work!). Hint: if you don't know what the term "analytical bibliography" means, do not buy this book (exception: if the book is required for your class in Analytical Bibliography!).
Gaskell is an astonishingly thorough one volume overview of almost everything about the transmission of printed text. It consists of only 438 pages, yet manages to cover book production from 1500 to 1950. Included are sections on printing type, composition, paper, imposition, presswork, warehousing, binding, decoration, the American and English book trades, machinery, etc., ad infinitum (it seems). The "Reference Bibliography" following various appendices thoroughly lists the resources to which one would refer for more indepth analysis (e.g., watermark catalogs, surveys of the book industry during historical periods, Stationer's Records ...).
The final section on "Bibliographical Applications" is probably the most complex, and also my favorite part of this work. It gives a fair overview, with examples, of bibliographic description of the kind one would find in an antiquarian bookseller's catalog.
This book is NOT a standalone resource for all aspects of analytical bibliography, though I can't imagine anyone working in this activity starting anywhere OTHER than with Gaskell. The only improvement would be an expansion to a 10 volume encyclopedia on the subject of analytical bibliography.

History maybe, not Bibliography

I thought I was buying a book like the MLA, or Tarabian book on the proper way to cite references, but this book is nothing useful for College students. Unless you are studying to be a printing expert, because they have all kinds of historical information about different kinds of print face from old England and others.

Chris Hart is a Genius--This Book is Not

Christopher Hart is a genius when it comes to teaching art. Unfortunately, this book doesn't quite live up to the bar he's set with previous works. It teaches elementary figure drawing, along with faces, hair, hands, feet, and clothing. But his previous books did a much better job. This one skims over the basics, never quite giving enough information. The only element that sets this book apart is the fact that it touches on clothing and fabric, which his other books skipped.

Its one redeeming quality is that it doesn't limit you to drawing stick-thin models. Some actually have curves! As for the clothing and hairstyles, much of it looks vague, lacking in detail. And the looks are seriously dated. The author's comic origins show through quite a bit, too. One model is wearing a cape with a triangular turtleneck collar, looking exactly like some alien superhero.

I would not recommend this book if you're serious about learning fashion illustration. I know it's intended for girls who are learning to draw, but I wasted years of my life being unable to draw the way I wanted to, simply because I read books like this, instead of books that actually taught good drawing skills. I hate to be so critical, since Christopher Hart's other figure drawing books are so good. But this one just isn't.

Recommended instead:
* Figure It Out! (Christopher Hart Figure It Out!) Christopher Hart's essential book on figure drawing.
* Human Anatomy Made Amazingly Easy Christopher Hart's other essential book on figure drawing. It focuses more on anatomy, so you learn which ankle bone is higher, how to shape collarbones, and so forth. Very useful if you want your drawings to look realistic.
* Contemporary Fashion Illustration Techniques The text is translated, so it doesn't always make sense, but the illustrations are self-explanatory.
* Fashion Illustration for Designers A high-end textbook for designers who want to learn fashion drawing, very in-depth.
* Character Costume Figure Drawing: Step-by-Step Drawing Methods for Theatre Costume Designers Intended for theater costumers who need to design and draw their own costumes. Especially good for learning to draw dancers.

A great book for aspiring fashion designers that rivals the 9 Heads book FIDM uses as a textbook. I had initially purchased this for a pre-teen as a gift and will be purchasing another copy for myself! It explores various fashion poses and explains how to draw fashion figures as well as how to draw fabrics and accessories. Worth every penny for someone interested in fashion design or simply wants more practice drawing figures.

I'm pretty pleased with this book, I'm a long time Chris hart fan and I have quite a few of his book. I find the tone of this book interesting in that its part of the for For Girls series but I don't really think thats a fair generalization of the material. anyone can be into design, I'm not, but it does have practice pages on heads and such which the other books don't. In all I'm happy with it.

Great investment

This book is great, it is very detailed and the MRI images are extremely helpful. It is a great way to review your anatomy especially when it comes to MRI images. They did a great job with the dissections, it helped me a lot in school to have this reference for all of the tendons and ligaments in the equine limb. Having been done with anatomy for a while now, I find this book most helpful for the MRI images. I also use it for a review for surgery because the images are so great. I had this on my wish list for a long time and now that I own it I have no complaints about this book.

This is a beautiful text - a real work of art. I've been using it for a course on equine locomotor anatomy and it has been an invaluable resource. The price is steep, but I think I will get a lot of continued use out of this text as my veterinary studies advance.

Most Illuminating Psych Book I've Read

As a psychiatrist, I have yet to read a more illuminating book on how mental illnesses can develop, and how to help patients' to become free of them.
Existential Psychotherapy presents a theory of the existential forces that drive all human beings--knowledge of death, of our aloneness in the world, and of "meaninglessness" (the utter inconsequence of our one life in the entirety of the universe). It shows how these forces are powerful influences in shaping human mental health and illness.
Other reviewers here point out that the basic existential issues Yalom presents are well-known to academics and to many literate people who are exposed to them in that good, broad, liberal arts education we (still?) get in college. But what Yalom achieves in this book, has not to my knowledge been accomplished before (nor since): a presentation of these ideas to an audience of clinicians in a lucid, beautifully written, way that is salient to the daily practice of psychotherapy.
Yalom is a rare psychiatrist who is not only a master of the art of teaching and practicing psychiatry, but for this book, ventured into philosophy, literature, history, and sociology, and then integrated the wisdom each brings to the study of human nature, into a clear and cohesive whole, a beautifully written theory of the existential dimension of men's fears, drives, and actions, and how this dimension creates mental illness or health, depending on how each person handles it.
What is amazing is how such a book is now buried in the archives of (relative) obscurity, while others, recycling the same old tired ideas, reign on.
So what do these lofty insights in Yalom's book contribute that is unique and powerful to us lowly practitioners toiling daily in our offices in the (seemingly more banal) task of helping patients with daily crises, complaints, resistance to change, and painful repetitions of self-destructive life choices?
One very important tool: a true understanding of the power of existential concerns, not only in creating mental illness and self-destructive life paths, but, by shining a light on them-- capturing that elusive force of change: MOTIVATION. This force, and how to harness it to help patients overcome their suffering, has for me been one of my greatest challenges as a doctor. And one for which most books on psychotherapy have fallen short in helping me tackle.
In the sections "death" and "will", (two of the four main sections in the book), Yalom forges a path that I could follow, to help my patients free themselves of the fears that block motivation for change. In short, Yalom shows how the anxiety about, (and thus avoidance of) awareness of our death and aloneness, can cripple us into denial, and resistance to changing those of our behaviors that shield us from these truths. But, these very fears, when faced and reframed--as the awareness of one's finite limits, and of the freedom that comes along with one's aloneness, become extremely potent engines for change. Other peoples' judgements, and fear of failure, lead us to believe that the human "judges" are the most important threat in our lives. But in Yalom's world, these feared judgements pale in comparison to the the consequences of inaction. When we live with acute awareness that we waste our only life when we are beholden to judges who are after all, mortal and alone just like us, this can shake us up to MOVE and LIVE, in this finite life, in a way other insights cannot.
This example of how avoidance of existential fears leads to anxiety, low self-worth, and depression, is but one vignette in this book. Yalom applies his theory to the gamut of mental illness, and includes discussion of how narcissism, perversions, obssessions, masochism, sadism, ...the list goes on, are fueled by existential concerns. Yalom argues that they all boil down to one of two main strategies we humans employ to "forget" Death, Aloneness, and Meaninglessness: Either we escape too much into the protective cover of the GROUP, and become mindless group robots who drone through life until illness, or loss forces us to suddenly face our mortality, at which point many of us panic, or become depressed, OR, we get sucked into this defiant delusion : "I am SPECIAL"...smarter, more rebellious, unfettered by the social conventions of meek men, thus free of death's jaws". This reaction then can lead to reckless, impulsive, pseudo "powerful" behaviors that are often the fuel of many "acting out" mental problems: addiction, sociopathy, sadism, and narcissism.
Enough of my words-read and feel the power of Yalom's words in this great book.

This book is a very enriching and expanding experience, not only for the person reading the book, but also for the people around the reader, as you simply can't help discussing the themes with friends and family. It is admirable how Yalom treats the subject without neither moral judgement nor dogmatic lecturing, opening a challenging universe, leaving it to the reader to find his or her own way through the chaos of life. Compulsory reading for anyone interested in psychology, philosophy or simply oneself and other human beings.

I really like this book

I really like this book. I found this when I was looking for resources to rebuild my own transmission but it wasn't yet available. I purchased the tech manual for the AOD/AODE transmission and have done a lot of research while waiting for this to become available. Having done probably over 50 cumulative hours of research I'd say this is the closest thing to an AOD/AODE bible available.

Currently I am in the middle of my rebuild but have performed removal/reinstall twice. (bought a used tranny for $125 so I could take my time on the rebuild). My experience so far is that it leaves little for me to figure out and the pictures are awesome. Most resources discuss the clutch packs and assemblies but leave the novice/home mechanic hoping they understand. With the pictures I can see exactly which assemblies come out together and how the clutch packs go together with much greater confidence.

I don't regret buying the tech manuals and still review them as supporting documents but if I had it all to do over again I'd have saved $90 and bought this book only. (The shop/tech manuals run about $40 plus tax and shipping and you need to buy 2 of them to cover the design changes)

In summary this is the only book you need to rebuild this very common tranny. It is well written and the detailed photos are a god send. Compared to the price I paid for the "official" shop manuals I would have gladly paid a lot more for this resource.

Great book for a novice rebuilder

The book covers all the details very well. I used it while rebuilding a 4R70W and although it was written for the AOD, it does have a chapter that details the differences. It also has pictures for each step that make things pretty clear. But if you are going to rebuild your transmission, be sure and keep all the parts grouped together by sub-assembly. The valves in the valve body can be confusing otherwise.

purchased to rebuild a junk yard transmission

I purchased this book to buy a junk yard transmission and rebuild it so I can put in my lincoln and make the swap without taking my vehicle down and then rebuilding it. The book came fast and was everything I could've wished for. Seems very thorough and exactly everything I will need for the job ahead.
