The book contains information that cannot be found in any one place on the internet. It is a unique book in the sense that it covers information on the ELF binary format, Linux virus infection techniques, process memory forensics, kernel hacking, reverse engineering concepts, hot patching, binary encryption, and more. In some places the formatting of the code (As in tabs/indentation etc.) is not so great, but overall the book gives a very good presentation and summarizes knowledge that cannot be found from very many sources. The author is very experienced in his knowledge of ELF, security, virus design, forensics analysis and much more. It is great for a wide spectrum of people, from software engineers who are building ELF linkers, to security analysts who are designing Virus detection, and binary protection software. The author has also left a note on his web page describing some of the problems with the book: (...)

Grandmaster Larry Evans is a 5-time USA champion, author of 25 books, and the “dean” of American chess. His national syndicated column, Evans on Chess, has appeared continuously since 1971. A good approach to increase your rating !

First of all I would most recomend this book for average chess players and players who are starting to learn chess, but who has not access to any experienced chess player to guide them through the exciting world of chess. A commom wisdom within chess is that when you have lost a game, you should analyse your game and try to find out what went wrong. Then you should try to learn from your experience. This is the best way to improve your game. This is also the idea behind this book, Larry Evans a GM from the US, has selected from a wide variety of different players, from amateurs to world-class players like Kasparov, Karpov, Anand and Fischer. Each page within this book gives examples of a position and the reader is given the task to pick between two moves, one which is right and one move which has actually occured during a game which is wrong. Reading through this book -I used a chess board in front of me , altough i must admit it was a bit boring to setup all the postions - was a fascinating journey to a lot of interesting positons. I am absolutely sure that I become a much better chess player by working through this book, some situations were familiar from my own games and I learnt what I did wrong, the book thought me a lot about opening, midddle game(especially) and when it comes to end game there is a lot of entertainment from examples from different positions. What I didn't like about the book was that Evans commentary sometimes were with a humiliating tone for some players involved. The fact is that we all make mistakes -as this book clearly demonstrates- but there should be no reason to be upset about it. Chess should after all be a friendly game which is fun. Right now I have started to repeat the book , this time without a board in front of me;).

Purpose is Enjoyment not Improvement

I reject the oft implied notion that each chess book should be judged by how many Elo points you gain as a direct result of reading the book. Reading a chess book rarely increases one's Elo rating. In this regard most chess books are the same.

Yet chess books differ greatly in how enjoyable they are to read. This book by Larry Evans is more enjoyable than is the average chess book. I am glad I own this book.

The enjoyable-ness of this book comes in part from the ready access it gives to the two move choices presented to the reader. The two moves to choose from are presented immediately under the diagram. The reader's task is to determine which move is a big blunder. The explanation of both moves is presented in paragraph format at the bottom of the same page.

This avoids the under-criticized tedious hassle of having to flip thru pages in the back of the book. This is a handy book to keep by your throne at home.

However, it would have been better for the explanatory paragraphs to have been printed two pages ahead. That would have kept them nearby, and yet helped you avoid accidently reading the answer.

Evans' prose is usually pleasant to read, especially when he discusses diagrams from his own games (true feelings, less need for cliche as when discussing games he was not involved in).

My only criticizm of this book is that Evans rarely attempts any educationalor summary explanation beyond giving variations. The book is also a little pricey considering how few puzzles are in it.

It worked for me!

I like this book. Despite the other reviewers' negativity, I have found it helpful. I am relatively new to chess, I know the basic rules and enjoy playing, but I haven't played any tournaments or been rated. This book is helping me to think out the positions and analyze them more seriously than I did before. If you are (relatively) new to chess, this is a good book. If you are an advanced player, this is not the one for you.

About the Author

Thomas Barta is an internationally recognized thought leader on marketing leadership. Practical Help - Great Ideas, graphics, templates

I am usually apprehensive about books like this but this books graphics tuned me in. As I thumbed through the book, I kept stopping at the graphics and what they were telling me. Those ideas drew me in to read the book more carefully. It's a good book with good ideas.

A great theme is that Doing Marketing is very different from Leading Marketing -- there are 12 major themes of the book. They're worth reading for marketing leaders. Some of the stuff, you'll be familiar with but the book gives you a solid baseline. I'm carrying it across the country a few times as I get through it.

The 12 Powers of a Marketing Leader: How to Succeed by Building Customer and Company Value is entertaining as well as informative. The other day I looked at a box of mints and wanted to show off what i read in the book about how the 50 size was borrowed from the success of that size in other countries. The book is funny in the way it shows how marketing leaders should be the drivers and how they currently are not and how to make that happen.
With reference to a company with customer feedback gathering portals right at point of service. (I was reminded of a supermarket in India where I had to select emoticons as feedback of the visit.) Walk the Halls is a good advice for many roles. The book has some interesting thought points with related studies in terms of percentage. for 'Contribution to Marketer's Impact and Success'.

Effective Delivery of Lots of Great Info I Could Put to Immediate Use

This book has tons of great info and I love the way it's presented. It can be read in small chunks or all the way through front to cover. The theories in here are tested and true advice and guidance backed up by facts. For instance there's a specific area I really know I could do better and this book not only points it out but convinces me to work on it by telling me why. I really enjoy books like this that make a real difference and make me better at something or as a person and this book does both for me. It also kept my interest visually and explained things in lots of ways (grouping of the subjects, presenting statistical info, including lots of graphs and illustrations, etc.) so I could really get a grip on the information and put it to immediate use. Lots of books have great info but the delivery on this book is what makes it appeal to my style.

Very clever intro into series

I hadn't heard of the Breaker series before I came across the novella Outcome as a free promotion. It's set in the world of the Breaker series, but is a standalone. I snapped it up and read it in one setting. The story works quite well on its own (how a man, his daughter, and a woman from the man's past) deal with the outbreak as they try to flee New York.

I've read a lot of both self-pubbed and dystopian fiction. I was very pleasantly surprised at Robertson's solid writing chops. He writes clearly, gives the reader distinctive characters, and moves the plot along as well as any traditionally pubbed writers. He's also great at world-building, creating a post apocalyptic world that is both familiar, but fresh, not something easy to do in the well trod dystopian genre.

Needless to say, I was eager to read the first book in the actual series. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I went to buy that book and found that it and the next two books in the series were 99c. Needless to say, I snapped them up and am already halfway through the first one, which is just as good. If you're into dystopian novels, I think you'll enjoy this series.

Lots of Potential

I found this novel to be quite frustrating! It began with a great deal of promise and potential with a strong female lead character who chooses to follow her heart and try to save at least a couple people more than just herself when she foresees the end of the world. It began with a good pace and a lot of potential, but then the story seemed to just get stuck in the rut of the search. If I had known that I was going to read an entire book, minus the first and last chapters, that was solely about hunting down people rather than choosing to actually get out of Dodge when the SHTF I would never have begun the book. I only stuck with it all the way thru because I just couldn't believe the WHOLE book would be such a narrow scope with very limited drama or adventure. I would probably give this author another chance because I felt there was a lot of potential, but this book was not one I would recommend.

About the Author
Albena Stambolova is the author of three novels. She has also published a collection of short stories and a psychoanalytical study on Marguerite Duras. She currently lives in Bulgaria, where she works as a psychological and organizational consultant, and is working on a book about fairy tales.

Olga Nikolova completed her PhD at Harvard University, with a dissertation on modern poetry, graphic design, and academic writing. She's been translating the works of Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein in to Bulgarian.

It does not happen as it does...

I was not thrilled with the story as much as I was interested in the title of the book. I felt that the character's lives between the stories of the novel were not tied together well. The first character that is introduced does not really come back into the story until the end and this was disappointing. However, i liked what the author attempted to do when illustrating human beings daily lives whether they are mundane or not the vocabulary to describe each character was satisfactorily.

About the Author
John W. Hill received his Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas. As an organic chemist, he has published more than 50 papers, most of which have an educational bent. He has authored or coauthored several introductory level chemistry textbooks, all of which have had multiple editions published. He has also presented over 60 papers at national conferences, many relating to science education. He has received several awards for outstanding teaching and has long been active in the American Chemical Society, both locally and nationally. Now professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls, Hill authored the first edition of Chemistry for Changing Times in 1972. Revising and updating this book has been a major focus of his life for four decades.

Terry W. McCreary received his B.S from St. Francis University, his M.S. from University of Georgia, and his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. He has taught chemistry at Murray State University since 1988, and was presented with the Regents Excellence in Teaching Award in 2008. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Kentucky Academy of Science, and has served as Technical Editor for the Journal of Pyrotechnics. In his spare time he designs, builds, and flies rockets with the Tripoli Rocketry Association; he was elected president of the association in 2010. McCreary is the author of several laboratory manuals; General Chemistry with John Hill, Ralph Petrucci, and Scott Perry; and Experimental Composite Propellant, a fundamental treatise on the preparation and properties of solid rocket propellant.

Good e-resources... at a cost.

The book was required reading for my College intro chemistry course. I found it readable, but some of the more technical elements leave a little to be desired in the way of explanation. They do assume that you have some foundation, which isnt necessarily a bad thing.
The Masting Chemistry addition to the text- also required for my class- was a pretty good e-learning resource. I don't typically like E-text as I like to flip back and forth when working on homework and referencing different things, but I found the search function amazing.
If you are on a homework question and you can't find where in the text it is referencing you can type in key words like "pollution" as an example and it will give you different chapters to quicklink to where that term is references and also give you the definition if it is a glossary term. Really useful!.
The downside was of course the price as I feel that $160 for a class book is a little overboard, but that is about par for the course in this genre... doesnt make paying it any easier though.

Great Book and Seller

This book is the perfect substitute for the 14th edition if you don't wish to shell out $168 to buy a used one. There is no difference in the content besides a couple of changed pictures and the slight change in the format. The Book had some issues regarding it but the seller was very understanding and handled the situation immediately. Thank you very much for the unbelievable service!
