About the Author
R. Michael Furr is Professor of Psychology and McCulloch Faculty Fellow at Wake Forest University, where he received the 2012 Award for Excellence in Research. His methodological work focuses on the measurement of similarity between psychological profiles, on the measurement of behavior, and on contrast analysis. His substantive research focuses on personality judgment and on the links between personality, situational forces, and behavior. He is a former associate editor of the Journal of Research in Personality , a former executive editor of the Journal of Social Psychology, and a consulting editor for several other scholarly journals. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in psychometrics, psychological testing, personality psychology, statistics, and research methods at Appalachian State University and Wake Forest University.

Verne R. Bacharach is professor of psychology at Appalachian State University. He has held faculty appointments at the University of Alabama, Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, and Acadia University in Nova Scotia and has chaired the departments at Appalachian State and Acadia. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics, tests and measurements, and research methods for nearly 40 years. He has a long journal publication history of research and review articles. Dr. Bacharach obtained a Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Kansas in 1971.

Francine Prose may never surpass Joyce Carol Oates in the Prolific Olympics, but she is one of those omnipresent writers whom failed writers hate. And surely she'll make new enemies with her hilarious and cruel 10th novel, Blue Angel, a satire of academia, specifically of English and writing departments. The setting is Euston College in rural Vermont, a place kids go to if they don't get into Bennington; a place where desperate novelists teach creative writing to rich kids who don't seem to read. Prose, who has taught at all the hotshot workshops, skewers both teachers and students in the way only a true insider could.

Swenson, her writing-teacher protagonist, once published a well-received novel but is now consumed by neuroses and repressed lust, and instead of writing tends to get drunk or morose, or both. But when a gifted student named Angela Argo enters his class, he feels like he is coming back to life. His resurrection into "believing" in writing again, and his eventual disappointment, form the core of the novel.

Prose's gift for satire is stunning as she directs her caustic wit at all the current academic debates: sexual-harassment policies warning against all manner of "touching"; deconstructionists versus Old School fuddy-duddies; women's studies teachers who bring everything back to the phallocentric Man killing us all. But Blue Angel's best passages come when the author is describing truly rotten writers. Here's a Connecticut rich girl, a member of Swenson's workshop, who likes to write about all those poor unfortunate nonwhite people. Her story is called "First Kiss--Inner City Blues" and is written from the point of view of a Latino woman who lives in a trash-strewn neighborhood full of gunfire and bad people. Here's the opening line: "The summer heat sat on the hot city street, making it hard for it to breathe, especially for Lydia Sanchez." It's a sentence so bad, it's almost a revelation. --Emily White

In this astutely observed, often laugh-aloud funny and sometimes touching academic comedy, she proves more skeptic than cynic, with an affection for her central character that is surprisingly warm. He is Ted Swenson, a happily married and reasonably content novelist who teaches creative writing at a much less than Ivy League college in darkest Vermont. Stuck on his own latest book, he is nevertheless charmed and intrigued by the writing skills of the unlikely, ungainly and punky Angela Argo. (Prose takes the considerable risk of offering chunks of Angela's work, and the reader can see in it what poor Ted does.) Out of the best intentions--and an only half-acknowledged but not compelling concupiscent itch--he encourages the girl, who is soon hanging on his every word of praise and hinting that if only Ted's editor could see her work... One moment of lustful madness that is not even consummated (a broken tooth intervenes), a disinclination of Ted's editor to see Angela's novel-in-progress and Ted's goose is cooked. Suddenly, every tiny hint of lechery or unfairness toward his students, an outburst at an unbearable dinner party, a kindly gesture are all evidence against him, dragged out in a climactic academic hearing that is at once farcical and horribly realistic. A slightly indeterminate ending--for where does poor Ted, sans wife and job, go from here?--is the only minor blemish on a peerlessly accomplished performance, at once tinglingly contemporary and timelessly funny. YA-Professor and novelist Ted Swenson's life is just about perfect. The publication of a well-received novel years earlier earned him a light teaching load at his small college, and if his fiction-writing students show little talent, that means there's plenty he can teach them. His troublesome daughter has left for college, and he and his wife are enjoying their cozy country home, where Swenson occasionally-very occasionally-works on his long-overdue second book. Enter Angela Argo, a quiet young woman with orange-and-green hair, multiple facial piercings, a dog collar, and more talent than he's ever seen in a student. Swenson's feeling generous-he'll take some time from his unbusy life and give her a little extra attention. The fact that the subject of her novel is a student with a crush on her teacher makes him a little nervous, but it's not like he's going to have an affair with her. He wouldn't do anything that stupid and besides, he loves his wife-. Prose's tightly written satire of college life and its new code of morality will have sophisticated teens laughing out loud. They might also do some serious thinking about love and sex, and about the many ways people can fall prey to one another. Note: the cover photo of a girl's exposed buttocks can be more problematic than the book itself.

beautifully written but ultimately frustrating

I'd never read Francine Prose, but I'll definitely look up her backlist. Her writing is smooth and easy and immediately hypnotic. Also, the novel's premise is hilarious: here is a respected woman writer and academic, writing a book that oh, so delicately skewers the fervent feminists, the sexual harrassment hysterics, and the panderers to politically correctness that infest the average college campus. Now THAT's brave. Doesn't she know she can lose tenure for this?
So why the 3-star rating? The first three-fourths of the book were terrific -- but it seems that, in the end, it topples under the weight of its own conceit. You suspect where Prose is going from the get-go (familiar with the Marlene Dietrich film "The Blue Angel?"), and she goes there in style. The characters are quickly but fully fleshed out, especially anti-heroine Angela Argo. But just when you're REALLY interested in these people, all the actors file on stage for the end you knew was coming and the book is over. Why the heck did Angela do what she did? We don't know. Maybe if I were an academic -- if I was more familiar with campus politics -- I'd think the satire was worth the price of admission. It's those who live in Prose's world who will get the most out of this book.
This is not a book I would dismiss out of hand; nor would I pass it over based on a customer review. Read it for yourself.

In June, I attended a David Sedaris reading, part of his latest book tour. At the end, he held up Francine Prose's "Blue Angel" and said it was the funniest book he's read in a long time. So, knowing his work, I went into this novel expecting laugh out loud hilariousness. This novel is so much more though. Prose writes with such a clever hand that you don't often laugh out loud, but chuckle inside at her deft use of language and humor and wordplay. I loved the characters, especially Swenson, his wife Sherrie, and of course, the Angela, the Blue Angel herself. If you've ever taken a college creative writing class, you'll appreciate the numerous scenes where student stories are workshopped. Francine Prose captures college life and student attitudes perfectly. This novel made me want to read other Prose books.

A Tour-de-Force Satire

This page-turner packs quite a punch. It is the story of a college creative-writing professor struggling with his attraction toward one of his students. He is happily married, but can't seem to shake his desire for this young, jittery, tattooed and punkish girl with enough facial piercings to make her head look like a disco ball. Meanwhile, he is trying to cope with a disenfranchised daughter, a class full of would-be writers, and a college environment that is growing increasingly wary of sexual misconduct and gender warfare.
In Blue Angel, Francine Prose skewers campus politics and this country's return to the sexual mores of the Victorian Era. Her writing is authentic, unaffected, and sharp, and she manages to do what so many other writers cannot... tell a compulsively readable story that has depth, meaning, and insight. For a deeper understanding of the story, look for Prose's many telling references to other authors and novels (Chekhov, Lolita, Jane Eyre)... none of these references are without implication.
I have noticed that a number of people who have written about this book here did not like the book, particularly the ending. It is important to remember, however, that the best of satires do not leave readers feeling satisfied. They leave us feeling frustrated and dissatisfied, not only for the characters, but for the reality that these characters represent. This book is no exception. It is easy to see why nearly every newspaper and magazine in this country has taken its turn praising Blue Angel to the high heavens, and why this book was a National Book Award Finalist. I am very much looking forward to reading more of Francine Prose's work.

As a couples therapist, I have long suggested Stan Tatkin’s books to my clients as an significant part of therapy and their ongoing journey as a couple. Now Stan has presented the perfect companion for those clients who have not yet paired up, are in the beginning stages of pairing up, or even those who are in relationship but want to deepen their understanding of attraction, commitment and longterm success in relationship. In this new book, Stan offers the “science” of attachment, neurobiology, arousal systems along with practical skill based exercises to guide the reader in the picking, vetting, dating and committing process. Dr. Tatkin's Books Helped Us Create the Best Relationship!

I love all of Dr. Stan Tatkin's work and have also read Wired for Love and listened to his entire audio program, Your Brain on Love. I highly, highly recommend his books and have interviewed him on my radio show and YouTube channel 4 times now, which is probably more than anyone else in the 8 years the show has been on the air. Wired for Dating will give you a basic understanding of attachment types, helpful stories that provide some context, and exercises to give you practice and insight into your reactive patterns in dating and relationships. Dr. Tatkin's work has transformed my relationship and I have finally been able to create a "secure functioning" relationship within a "couple bubble" that gives me and my partner the secure attachment we didn't get as kids. We both feel so grateful to have discovered his material and I wish this stuff was common knowledge. Even if your childhood attachments were great and your relationships have been solid, if you're out in the world of dating, you're going to bump into people who didn't have that experience. It's helpful to know how to relate and communicate with authenticity in a way that isn't likely to trigger them. You'll learn a lot about yourself and the people you're dating.

The exercises are explicit and easy to follow

This is very different from other books on dating because of the psychobiological approach. The explanation of different attachment styles and how it relates to understanding the connection between the couple from the beginning to ongoing relationships is so clear and the case examples make it very relatable. The exercises are explicit and easy to follow. I especially appreciated the chapter teaching people how to calm their partner's nervous system as well as their own. I will highly recommend this book to friends and therapy clients, to those are dating and as an adjunct to Wired for Love.

A Little Disappointing

I have Corey Hilz's second edition Lensbaby book, so my expectations for this book were high. This book fell short. The general theme of this book to me was exposure and how to operate your camera. There is nothing wrong with that, but with Lensbaby lenses, you need the hows and whys, which for me didn't happen.

The very last section of the book showed a few pictures taken with Lensbaby lenses, which are beautiful and state the exposure used, but for me it wasn't enough.

If you can afford a little more to buy a book on Lensbaby, I recommend Cory Hilz's second edition "Lensbaby: Bending Your Perspective". I can only give this Kindle book 3 stars.

Lensbaby Secrets Revealed!

As an avid Lensbaby Enthusiast myself---I believe, this is a tremendous resource for experienced and novice photographers interested in unlocking the key to Lensbaby success! Instead of learning everything by "trial and error", Doug Sahlin has provided ideal uses for the various optic systems and beautiful rich photographs that show his artistic talents. He has captured the ability to share the concepts of working with Lensbaby Optics and getting creative results.

Equally valuable are his insights into how to create better images which can be used on any photographic journey. The chapter on composition provides rationale and specific tips on developing ones own style of photography. Being able to develop skills to enhance your results cuts across all lens and is significant for all photographers.

This book and his enthusiasm made me grab my beloved Lensbaby Composer Pro and head outside to reconnect with the wonder and joy using a Lensbaby.

Thanks Doug, for a wonderful resource with such valuable information! It is a staple now in my Kindle Library and I can refer to it often--perfect for when I am on the go and at home.

For those desiring to use the Lensbaby system

I have followed the photography of Doug Shalin and his expertise with the Lensbaby system of lenses, so when he published this Kindle book I purchased it immediately.

Doug gives a considerable amount of basic information on photography generally and builds on this to put a newbie on a successful path with the Lensbaby optics available. He points out differences of operation by the major brands of camera using Lensbaby optics, the variety of Lensbaby lens bodies, Muse, Composer Pro, Control Freak, and Scout, and how the optics work in these bodies, and the accessories available, as well as which optics these accessories work with, and details on the optics design. There are also warnings in the form of Tips to steer a user away from problems of exposure and operational issues with these interchangeable optics.

If you are considering the Lensbaby System of Optics, get this book; it will help eliminate much initial frustration and flatten your learning curve with these lenses.

I wish a book like Doug's have been available when I started with the Lensbaby; much of my initial confusion would have been cleared up.

Thoughtful and insightful explanations of our present moral and cultural decay

Jack Chick and David W. Daniels have been HUGE with my understanding how present day events erode our moral compasses without our even realizing it on occasion. We have been brainwashed to believe that many predicaments occurring around us are, on the surface, "harmless", when in truth they are anything BUT.

I am thankful to Chick and Daniels for all their publications, as these have helped my own spiritual growth as a KJV Bible and God believing Christian, for without them, my road may have been a bit rockier. Thanks Gents!!

I am at the heart of the increasingly voluble discussion on "conscious leadership" and "culture" in dynamic companies. I have run companies, and I routinely advise early and mid-stage companies on practices to increase effectiveness and develop more transparent communication structures.

I found this book to be invaluable in terms of laying out a clear and directive structure regarding core principles companies can deploy to create a more aware and effective workplace. Although it seems obvious -- and although words like "authenticity" are bandied about quite a bit in management discussions -- this book offers direct guidance on what it means to create an organization where candor and authenticity are the very lifeblood of the company. Where gossip is not present. Where being "right" is less valuable than being curious.

This book is more than just theoretical, although it's immensely thoughtful. It is real and it is executable. As our workforce changes and as millennials increasingly are demanding roles in companies that put "growth" of people as a guiding principle, using this book and these commitments as guideposts will be invaluable.

Each chapter addresses common mistakes made in the area that chapter covers and offers suggestions on how to avoid those mistakes. The authors include examples of counseling situations where mistakes were made or avoided to demonstrate what they are talking about. Mistakes may be philosophical/conceptual or applied. Philosophical or conceptual mistakes refer to incorrect assumptions. Applied mistakes refer to a poor use or no use of theory. Mistakes are often hard to recognize.
Mistakes can be made in any one of the following areas:
Structure
If there is no structure, the couple replays the dynamics of their interactions at home in the therapy session.
The therapist must demonstrate that he/she is on the side of the relationship, not the side of one individual.
Confidentiality
Therapists can choose models of confidentiality when seeing couples ranging from sharing everything from individual sessions with both spouses to sharing nothing from individual sessions with the other spouse. The authors recommend a model they call accountability with discretion, in which the therapist maintains information from individual sessions in confidence unless it is detrimental to the goals of the couple. In that case, the therapist asks the individual to share with his/her spouse. If the individual refuses, the therapist tells the couple that he/she is aware of information that makes it impossible to do couple therapy.
Neutrality
Partners often want the therapist to side with them against their partner, whom they see as more emotional, "sick," less articulate, etc. The therapist needs to maintain neutrality and must probe to know if the couple views the therapist as neutral.
Getting a full list of the clients' problems
Past and present must be held in balance.
Listening for a full range of problems
The therapist must be aware of indications of abuse, affairs, addictions, and severe pathology, as couples often try to hide such problems.
Completing the assessment before intervening
Intervening too quickly or too slowly is a problem. Therapists need to be aware of therapist issues that interfere with treatment, such as uncomfortable topics, blind spots, avoiding or minimizing issues, and lack of training.
Attending to the process
Therapists need to teach clients the process of resolving conflicts, as opposed to focusing only on content. Tone of voice, body language, and use of language ("I" vs. "you") are things that couples need to pay attention to. Process can be made explicit in the course of therapy.
Conflict
Conflict can be covert, overt, or a combination. The intensity of conflict may be high or low. The therapist must manage anger and conflict in the session.
Continuum of how couples perceive situations
Some couples can agree on most things, some couples have some disagreements, and some couples disagree on almost everything.
Reframing
A reframe is a statement designed to change the perception or emotional meaning that the client attaches to a behavior or event. Reframes often prepare the client for additional interventions.
Evaluating commitment
Commitment should be discussed when the couple raises the issue or when there are clues that one or both partners are thinking about leaving the relationship.
Spirituality

This book is a valuable resource to anyone who is practicing couples therapy. Of particular interest to me was the list of statements designed to foster closeness and statements designed to create distance, as these could be used as examples in working with clients. The section on dealing with conflict was also helpful, as the following steps for dealing with conflict were explained: normalize, recognizing individual roles, questioning the meaning each partner assigns to the other's behavior, and instilling hope that the couple can learn new ways of coping. Therapists also need to remember that symptoms serve some type of useful function. Reframing can change the focus of therapy from the individual to the couple. Therapists can learn from the mistakes of others by reading this book, as well as learning some things to watch for to know when they have made a mistake and what they should do about it.

A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY THERAPIST

I wish I had more time to write a detailed review. This is by far the best book I have ever read on couples therapy. I just came back to Amazon to purchase other books that Gerald Weeks has written. If they are as complete, pleasurable to read, in depth and useful as this one, I will be quite satisfied. This book would have been great to have a novice therapist but even now the writing articulates problems and solutions in such a clear helpful manner. I have hundreds upon hundreds of books on couples and family therapy and I could not put this one down. It was highlighted and weathered the night it received it. A real gem.

Weeks and his collaborators offer help to beginning as well as seasoned therapists regarding avoidance or correction of the most prevalent mistakes made when treating couples. The general categories addressed are:
Failing to acknowledge that mistakes exist
Failing to use theory when intervening
Failing to use a chosen theory or theories correctly
Failing to discard a theory when it is not applicable
Failing to act when action is clearly warranted
Failing to restrain oneself from intervening when it is not time

Weeks is also the co-author of Couples In Treatment: Techniques and Approaches for Effective Practice, a Standard textbook for couples therapy. This volume serves as a complement to that earlier work.

Issues of domestic violence, affairs, addictions, when to see clients individually or as couples, severe psychopathology, secret keeping, managing conflict in session, dealing with level of commitment of the couple, and assessing and dealing with spirituality in couple therapy.

This is another one of those books I wish had been around when I was a young therapist. It provides clear guidance in many situations where couple therapists are often stuck. It also serves as a reminder to all therapists that therapeutic mistakes are common. That is encouraging to both young and older therapists. I intend to recommend this book to all my therapist friends because of its clarity and practicality.
