Tootsie's review: Lynn Kelling is one of my most favorite authors in the m/m genre. I have read almost everything she has written so when I saw this new story, I knew I had to read it. Twin Ties 1: My Brother’s Lover is the first in what appears to be a 2 book series. It seems to me, most people, try to steer clear of this subject, And really, you can’t blame them because it seems to be a taboo area few want to take on. I think you are only human though to wonder about it, if for no other reason, than most, if not all, identical twins have such a closeness and a bond that most other people will never experience. I always felt it would be so wonderful to have a person, that in tune, with my own needs, know when I needed comfort, strength, guidance, whatever it may be, and they already knew and were right there to offer and give freely, anything you needed.

In this story, we have Evan and Brennan, identical twin brothers, who for whatever reason, their parents separated them at birth. The parents divorced, and each one took a son to live with them. It kinda makes sense that each parent would want a child to raise and love, but what they didn’t understand or take into consideration, was how it would affect the boys as they grow and mature. Identical twins have a bond that allows them to feel each other’s pain, joy, and heartache. As the boys were growing into young men, they felt something, they just didn’t know what it was because they didn’t know the other existed. This led for some very hard struggles in Evan’s life. He never felt complete or whole, but he didn’t understand why. His father never told him about his brother so this emptiness he felt was always a mystery to him. Brennan lived with their mother. He had an easier time because he had a wonderful relationship with him mom but he too, was missing something. When the boys are 18, some devastating things take place, and this brings them together for the first time ever.

Your heartstrings are really being pulled in this story. You are cheering them on when they meet because, you as the reader, only want what’s best. We are always striving for that happy ending. As Evan and Brennan are learning about each other and what makes the other one tick, by accident, they meet another set of identical twins. Luca and Alek have always been together and they share a very close, special bond. They are always loving on each other, no matter how small or big the gesture. They thrive on touch and feel from the other one. They are not ashamed for how they feel, but they know also, everyone is not always comfortable being a witness to their need. As Evan and Brennan pair off with Luca and Alek, they make some interesting discoveries. The love and commitment that Alek and Luca have, make it easier on Evan and Brennan to experiment and understand that it’s okay to love your brother. How could you not when this person is the other half of your soul and your heart.

I admire Lynn Kelling for telling this story and showing us, her audience, that it’s okay to love, regardless who the recipient is. While there is sex and much exploring, it is done tastefully. To me, it was very erotic at times, being a bystander, to see the brothers come together, in all ways, and express such love and compassion for each other. You can truly feel the need they have, the passion they share, the obsession, for lack of a better word, that connects them all and turns them into, what once was a half person, now is whole and their life finally starts to make sense. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to see love come together. Open your mind and your hearts and understand that it doesn’t matter they are brothers, what matters is, they are soulmates, destined to be together before birth, and it is a beautiful thing to experience such a bond and connection. Lynn Kelling has given us that gift, so enjoy it as it was intended.

Just...WOW! I'm hooked!

I swear, I've just finished Twin Ties in a state of post coital book bliss with an urge to light a ciggy...and I don't even smoke!!! I loved, loved, LOVED this story and I'm still not sure how the series has managed to escape my notice for so long.

This certainly ranks way high amongst the hottest books I've ever read but as amazing as the sex was...and believe me it was OFF. THE. CHARTS. It was the dynamics and intense emotional connection between the main four characters that shone for me. Yes, it's twincest and a taboo situation in the eyes of society, but this is Ms Kelling we're talking about and if anybody can take subject matter as controversial as this, and give it substance and depth outside of the expected heat factor, then Lynn can.

The story is based mainly around a small cast of seven...Evan, Brennan, Alek and Luka: the four MC's...Presley, Carter and Jimmy, three really likable supporting characters, whose friendship with both sets of twins is integral to the structure of the story...and an absentee father, who may not be present in person during the course of this book but his influence and past actions play a big part in why Evan is such an emotional mess to begin with.

Two sets of identical twins but four completely distinctly different characters, by the time eighteen year old Evan and Brennan and twenty five year old Alek and Luka had been fully introduced, if their names had never been used again I would have known each of them just by personality and temperament alone and fell hard for each one of them and their individual quirks and traits.

This isn't about intricate plots or complicated storylines, it's quite simply a character lead love story involving four conflicted men, coming together by an almost psychic connection that we know for a fact can exist between identical twins because they're so closely tied. Lynn Kelling uses that intense connection and portrays it in a way that nothing about their finally coming together as a foursome ever felt sordid or corrupt. It's not a choice made casually, but it's four consenting adults whose bond is so close, it transcends what we perceive as 'normal, and in a way just becomes a natural progression for these guys.

Evan is the most openly broken of the four. Never knowing he had an identical twin, his separation from Brennan as a baby and a dysfunctional relationship with a father who never really understood what his confused, emotionally battered son was coping with, has left him closed off emotionally. Self destructive in nature because all his life he's felt that 'something' important has been ripped away from him and never understanding what it is he's been missing all those years, his emotional sanity is barely hanging by a thread. Until his life is turned upside down the day a stranger with his face walks into his life, and around the same time, a hot and heavy hook up in a club bathroom with a relative stranger (Aleks) breaks the on going cycle of closeted, anonymous sexual encounters he's been indulging in. Encounters he’s been using to drown out the traumatic event in his past that left him the damaged soul he presently is.

Brennan however is a different fish altogether. On the surface he's more put together than Evan. More worldly and open about his sexuality, but he too has insecurities. He's desperate to get closer to the brother he also never knew he had, but getting through Evans tightly wound defences is not an easy task, especially when the accepted sibling love they can't help but feel for each begins to turn to morph into unexpected sexual attraction. Missing his recently deceased mother, who Evan never knew, Brennan is lonely and craves affection; which he gets from the exuberant, animated, bi sexual Luka, who the moment he sees the pretty blonde twink at the gym, pursues him with a passion...never realizing that at the same time, his more brooding, sexy, intense twin Alek is also just as enthusiastically attracted to the carbon copy of his current infatuation!

The two older twins might appear to be more emotionally stable, but in their own way they're also dealing with demons of their own. Only ever having had each other after their parents pretty much abandoned them, they've already taken their innate closeness as twins into forbidden territories. Sharing a house with two other guys, Presley and Carter (who have their own little drama playing out in the book) they're openly physical in front of their roomies. Sexually active together for years, they never broadcast it to the outside world but within their close circle of friends are comfortable enough to show that side of their relationship. They love each other deeply, but they're not 'in love' with each other. They just accept their form of fraternal love has moved into something more physical as a further extension of the intrinsic attachment they share as identical twins, and incorporate it into their life together. But there is a shadow hanging over them that lies heavy on Alek's shoulders in particular. A past guilt about that side of his and Luka's relationship that he's never been able to come to terms with, and when Evan and Brennan decide to take that taboo leap, it leads to some deep introspection for all parties involved.

Even though it does move into a poly relationship of sorts towards the end, you never lose sight of the fact that throughout the story, outside of the double twincest angle, this is still initially two separate couples falling in love. The twin twist of fate doesn't always make it an easy ride for any of them but there was never any duplicity or secrets, and I loved the honesty between the four of them. When things happened they met it head on and talked it out, and because of that it ends on a HFN note that does bring them some form of healing and closure at the finish… but… what’s next for the boys? What drama lies ahead? I'm pretty sure more conflict awaits these four because that's the nature of a situation like this, but that’s what makes this such an amazing read. So I’m jumping straight into book two of this engrossing series ASAP and on countdown for the third instalment.

Not the usual 'darkness' I've come to love from this author, but definitely an emotionally charged, drama that will push boundaries...this was reading heaven for me. Personally, I love twincest stories, and My Brothers Lover has to be my favourite up to now. It has everything I look for in a satisfyingly, emotive read and I am so fan girling Lynn Kelling right now! Plus, going back to the sex...FUUUUUCK! This book should come with a fire extinguisher attached to it and a warning that states..."reading this book may result in spontaneous combustion of the kindle…and reader"!

What a sexy, naughty, emotional roller coaster!!

What a sexy, naughty, emotional roller coaster!!

I really enjoyed this book. I don't think I put it down until I had finished it. I don't want to give away the plot, so I won't go too much into detail for this review. From the cover, I wasn't expecting what was inside, but with this type of book, a cover would be hard to fit. Do not judge this one by it's cover.

First off, this is a very taboo storyline. It isn't for everyone, but for those of us who do like the darker side of things, there is a box full of tricks to get your mind going. We get TWO sets of gorgeous twins, taboo and steamy sex, crazy surprises, and an emotional depth to capture your heartstrings. There is even a side romance between two other characters that had me rooting for them. I enjoyed that especially because it reminded me of my favorite author and I love how other characters can really bring to a storyline.

I will admit that I was a little turned off by the instant "I love you." moments, but that lasted all of two seconds before I was sucked into the rest of the story. It had me laughing, nearly crying, surprised, and even blushing at moments. I was happy that it wasn't predictable and I found myself surprised more than once. The characters weren't just stereotyped and typical. They didn't respond and react the way I though they might, and I loved that. I also enjoyed the balance between the characters. They may be twisted and messed up, but the author worked that perfectly to create a deliciously deep and stable relationship base.

This is definitely another book that had me falling in love with some gay men! I will definitely recommend this book to all taboo, M/M, and twisted book lovers. I want to tell anyone reading this review to please just read this book. It's definitely worth it.

About the Author
Yosry Morsis area of expertise is in tissue engineering of heart valves, and mathematical modelling and processing. The research into tissue engineering of heart valves in Australia is deemed a niche area of research due to the high complexity of simulating a natural heart valve. The research conducted by this group is ultimately aimed at the creation of living heart valves as replacement entities rather than using the current option of artificial heart valves. Biocompatible and biodegradable materials will be used as scaffolds to reduce the risk of host rejection. Thus far, a polyurethane tri-leaflet heart valve scaffold has been created and the design is constantly refined to achieve the optimal haemodynamic characteristics so as to simulate natural heart valves. Work of the BTE group has been nationally and internationally recognised in the areas of modelling mechanics, biomechanics and soft tissue engineering of heart valves. He has over 150 publications with H Index of 14 and is Member of the Editorial Boards of three international journals.

Anupam Shukla is an Associate Professor in the Information and Communication Technology Department of Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Gwalior, India. He has 21 years of teaching experience. His research interest includes Artificial Intelligence, Soft Computing, Biometrics, Bio-Medical Engineering, Bioinformatics Robotics, Animation and Signal processing. What Should the Focus of Worksite Wellness Be?

What should be the focus of worksite wellness is probably the biggest question facing the worksite wellness community today.

Knowing the focus or purpose of your program is critical as this sets the stage for everything else to follow – branding, infrastructure, tools, strategies, programming/initiatives/interventions, etc. Today, the overwhelming focus is on controlling employer health related costs. But should that really be our focus? Can worksite wellness programs focused on direct health related costs really ever make a cost difference? Have we over promised and under delivered in our ability to bend the cost curve? Personally, for many reasons, I think we have.

I think it is very unfortunate that a book titled Surviving Workplace Wellness even needs to be written. Workplaces today should be about thriving, flourishing, enabling, etc., not just surviving. Yet, unfortunately, many workplaces are far from being positive, supportive, enabling, healthy (in the broad sense) workplaces. Worksite wellness programs should never, ever contribute to an already toxic, unhealthy workplace. Yet might that not be just what is happening with today’s “pry…poke…and prod” wellness programs?

Al and Vik are often accused of being anti-wellness. While they make a strong case and challenge to HRAs and biometric screenings, does this mean they are anti-wellness? I think not. Just take a look at Chapter 8.

Like Al’s other book, “Why Nobody Believes the Numbers,” this book should be a must read for every worksite wellness professional. As a burgeoning field, we need to encourage and welcome dissenting views from today’s accepted practices. To not do so would be fool hardy on our part.

In my mind, Al and Vik have made their case against “pry, poke and prod” worksite wellness programs. If they are wrong, or misinterpreting the “facts” now is the time for today’s worksite wellness leaders to put forth an alternative argument along with their supporting “facts.” Beliefs are not facts. Worksite wellness programs should be based on the best available evidence, not beliefs about the way things should be.

As the debate surrounding the efficacy of today’s worksite wellness programs rages on, it is important to keep in mind HRAs and biometric screenings are just tools (among many) in the worksite wellness coordinator’s toolbox. They alone do not a worksite wellness program make.

Like any tool (copier, printer, production machinery, etc.), it always comes down to buyer beware. Make sure any tool you use is the best available and most appropriate tool to help you best achieve your worksite wellness program’s purpose. You do know what your program's purpose is don’t you?

Piercing the veil of political correctness

One of the fastest growing sectors in health care comprises the firms that promise that wellness programs will make your employees healthier, will save you (as an employer) money, and will help bend the curve for health care costs in general. The folks who have undertaken this line of work--and the employers that are complicit with them--are skewered in this new book by Al Lewis and Vik Khanna. The authors use a new technique in characterizing these programs: Analytic rigor, based on actual data, actual costs, and actual results. They pierce the veil of political correctness on this topic, explaining how human resources departments align with vendors and insurers to exploit the understandable hope of all of us that there is a holy grail in the health care world.

Yes, Virginia, many wellness programs are part of the medical-industrial arms race. Thanks to Al and Vik for making the truth evident to those who are willing to keep an open mind.

Lewis Does It Again

I've read all of Al Lewis' other books (I think), and this one is just as exceptional as the others. With his usual charm and wit, Lewis tackles yet another oft misunderstood, overlooked element of our daily lives. His analysis -- both empirical and qualitative -- is impressive and resonates with anyone who has a basic understanding of the health industry and wellness plans. Just a few months ago, I kid you not, after jumping through hoops to complete my biometric screening, online evaluation, health checklist, and employee education portal for my company's wellness initiative, the data revealed that...I should eat less buffalo chicken. If that doesn't scream "good allocation of resources" then I don't know what does!

Lewis' literary style is totally engaging, and this book will not disappoint. In fact, Lewis has so many good ideas about how to fix things that aren't working in America that we should give him his own currency. We could call it "Al bucks". Ha! While that quip is not worthy of Lewis' acute humor, this book is definitely worth your time if you have been through this comically broken wellness process before.

Printable questionnaire's?

Having bought the book and just started reading it, it seems to be well written and clear, the issue that I have encountered is that there are many questionnaires in the book and obviously on the kindle edition there is no way of marking one's responses. I am not sure if there is a companion website where one could download the questionnaire portions, print them out and mark them up as this would really increase the utility of the book since this is positioned as a practical guide and the participation of the reader is crucial to understanding the concepts in 'Night School'.

If such a site or resource exists would be great to have a link to that on the purchase page or in the item description, as otherwise the usefulness of the book is diminished greatly!

The Book's a WOW!

I'm a retired psychologist so the subject of sleeping and dreaming has been of interest to me throughout both my career and my personal life. This book is the best organized and written one on the subject I've ever come across. The author has taken a great deal of in-depth research that could have been dry and overwhelming, but he has organized it and presented clearly and easy to read and understand. As is his style, tucked in here and there are delightful touches of humor that add to the pleasure of reading it. In addition, this book is one that a person having difficulty with sleep could benefit from as it includes steps a reader can take to improve sleep, concentration and learning. I think Professor Wiseman is a unique contributor to our understanding of human existence. This book on sleep fits right in with his other winners such as Quirkology, 59 Seconds and The Luck Factor all of which are available on Amazon.

I came across this book by accident, on youtube.
But I am happy I did!

I love any neuroscience type book and you can't more into brains than sleep.

But it is an easy read and full of information.
I appreciate it because I work graveyards and need every bit of info.

Thank you Mr. Richard for such a nice book.

I refuse to believe it's over

I don't think I'm ready to say goodbye to this phenomenal series. A few years ago, fresh after getting my first Kindle (which was a big deal for an English language reader not living in an English speaking country) I randomly chose "Johannes Cabal: The Necromancer" as my next read. Oh boy, I was in for a ride. The adventures of a necromancer of some little infamy quickly became on of my favourite book series ever. A series which is now coming to a close (at least for the time being, as the author claims).

The fifth and final (?) book doesn't make this farewell easy - it might be the best in the series. It has everything that drawn me to Cabal's world in the first place, and much more. It's hilarious, well paced and action packed, with great dialogue and fantastic characters (can I get a Zarenyia spin-off series, pleaaase?). It's relentless, endless fun, and for that alone I encourage everyone to grab a copy. However, what really elevates the series for me is how well the author constructed our (anti?)hero Johannes Cabal, and how he lets him evolve. Creating a character that never fails to deliver laughs is one thing, but giving him depth displayed so naturally, in a way that never seems forced is a real accomplishment. Bravo, Mr. Howard!

So, my life of a reader will feel a bit emptier now that I have no Cabal novel to wait for (I am hoping for some short stories in the coming months, though). Nevertheless, I am grateful to Mr. Howard for sharing this five part awesomeness with us, excited about his other, future works and hoping that someday Cabal will return.

**Spoilers**The Cabal series is (in my opinion) one of the best fantasy series of the last decade. But this book fell short of the rest in this series for me. I feel like it got bogged down in its own style, and I ended up skipping half of it on my first read through and still understood the last chapter just fine. I thought Horst's characterization was a bit odd, I had never thought of him as an idiot before but this book took every opportunity it could to say "Oh yes, by the way, Horst is dumb". I get that he's in the company of Leonie and Johannes, but I always enjoyed how Horst was people-smart while Johannes was book-smart.

And I was really let down by the Red Queen, especially considering how much she was built up in the previous book. I was expecting an actual nemesis for Johannes, someone who could really challenge him, and even win in the end. It just left me going "eh" at the end.

I would still recommend this series to anyone who loves fantasy, the other books are still great enough to make it worth the time. And even this one had some great sections, I just don't think it's as good as the rest of the series.

Now, on with the show.

If H.P. Lovecraft and Douglas Adams had a lovechild, that gibbering lunatic is surely Jonathan L. Howard. Howard (who does borrow from the Lovecraft mythos) uses a sense of cosmic horror, peppered liberally with dry ridiculousness and wry humor to create something truly unique and fantastic. We are speaking here of Johannes Cabal.

Readers of the previous books will know Johannes Cabal as a necromancer, formerly also the ringmaster of an infernal circus, foiler of despotic maniacs, wanderer of Dreamlands, and foiler of despotic maniacs’ daughters. He is the kind of cold-blooded analytical soul who makes Sherlock Holmes (and also Professor Moriarty) look like puppy hugging imbeciles in comparison.

This fifth book finds Cabal hot on the trail of his ultimate goal: a cure for death. Clues left behind by an old defeated enemy point to a metaphysical path which leads (theoretically) to the fountain of youth. Cabal, never one to be turned from his goal once his mind is set, must recruit the help of his vampire brother, Horst, along with what allies he may call upon (you’d be right in guessing that the list is not long) to tread this path and finally achieve his heart’s desire.

I am (obviously) a fan of Howard’s previous Johannes Cabal stories, and have been waiting quite (im)patiently for this one to come out. I’m pleased to say that I was not disappointed. Howard brings back a few beloved characters from previous books, and it is always delightful to watch the misanthropic Cabal navigate the world of human social interaction.

So bottom line: if you’re a fan of the series, you’ll be quite pleased with the latest book, and should begin reading immediately. If you’e never heard of the series, you really shouldn’t have read this far. But as you are reading this, you should go get the first book in the series: Johannes Cabal the Necromancer, and begin reading immediately.

I sat down to read this piece of dystopian fiction ...

I sat down to read this piece of dystopian fiction expecting and eagerly anticipating a book similar
To the the novels I've come to expect of this genre(Hunger Games, World War Z, etc). Instead, what I read was a book that made me think, not just entertain; a book that truly frightened me because, unlike other books in this genre, we're already beginning to live this future. Splinterlands is both thoughtful and entertaining. I would hope that readers are sufficiently informed by Splinterlands that they are compelled to take action our future depends on it

The Splintering

This short speculative novel by John Feffer presents a chilling view of a global collapse just around the corner. A literal splintering. For those paying attention to the direction globalization is taking us, the narrative is convincing. Not so appealing is the “presentation” of the “content.” Therein lies the problem: the narrator, an academic and acclaimed author Julian West describes his literal displacement by Hurricane (ahem) Donald in 2022 which floods and decimates Washington, D.C., forcing West to his roof. Thank you, global warming.

It is not clear at the outset why, but some twenty-five years later, aged and in ill-health, West is bedridden and decides to contact his three estranged children and wife, all scattered across the globe. He does this with a virtual headset and avatar, Virtual tours plus “face to face” meetings in venues as diverse as Brussels, China, and Africa. West’s children have all taken separate paths, adjusting to the collapse in their own ways, but all have misgivings with their father. So we basically have three separate dialectics which doesn’t make for fully fleshed out drama. The splintering of the family is directly analogous to the splintering of the geopolitical landscape. Like the Syfy series, “Incorporated,” there are green and red zones.

This is less of a problem in the concluding two chapters where human interaction is more compelling. West contacts his estranged wife of 25 years, Rachel, also once a scholar researcher, who turned her back on academia to join a commune in Vermont, quite successfully as it turns out. West is receiving some experimental treatment for a pandemic staph infection. Rachel is ill, too and Julian wants them to be together to share the treatment. The transmission is cut off before she can answer.

In the final chapter we learn why West is receiving the treatment and from whom as well as other ulterior motives for contacting his family. It’s worth a look and makes for a quick read.

Another Short History of the Future

[Full disclosure: I have known the author for several years and had a small part in a production of one of his plays, in which he also performed. Our acquaintance has not led me to soften this review -- if I hadn't liked the book, I just wouldn't have reviewed it.]

"Splinterlands" is about "Splinterlands", a popular political tome of the early 2020s on a par with books by authors like Francis Fukuyama and Thomas Piketty in terms of its popularity and notoriety. And it's also about the Splinterlands, the disintegration of the interconnected post-Cold War liberal consensus world of international organizations and commerce that takes place between roughly 2018 and the middle of the 21st century, when the action of this short novel takes place. It's a first-person narrative by the largely sidelined author of "Splinterlands" after the fall of the current order, both a political account and an account of his own broken life and family.

There are elements of Whitley Strieber and James Kunetka's "Warday" here, in that "Splinterlands" is a tour of a post-catastrophe realm, spending sections on the fates of various cities and nations and how they got there. (Unlike "Warday", the Armageddon here wasn't wrought by bombs but rather by climate change and neo-nationalism in the form of Trump, Farage, Le Pen, and company.) Those seeking a traditional novel may be disappointed, as these aspects of "Splinterlands" are essentially a journalistic-style account of recent history from the perspective of about forty years hence. (In that respect, "Splinterlands" follows in the tradition of "A Short History of the Future" by W. Warren Wagar, another progressive writer.)

One of the most compelling aspects of "Splinterlands" is the set of endnotes, intended to have been appended later by a skeptical scholar. These reminded me of the notes in Nabokov's "Pale Fire" -- they tell an entire story on their own, greatly enriching the whole.

"Splinterlands" is a pessimistic work, but one that rings true. Feffer leaves it to the reader to decide whether it presents a world that is inevitable, or one that can yet be avoided.
