Another Magical Animal Adoption Agency Story

This is the second book in the Magical Animal Adoption Series. It was a cute story which deals with the importance of caring for animals, believing in yourself and others as well as looking beyond what is right in front of your face.

Clover works at the Magical Animal Adoption Agency. They have brought in a mysterious egg and do not know what will hatch. Mr. Jams goes off to bring back an egg expert and leaves Clover in charge. While he is gone, lots of things happen. The egg hatches, but Clover can not find the animal. She sets all kinds of traps but has no success. What she does find are things being chewed up, food eaten and items destroyed. She must catch the magical animal before Mr. Jams returns. Meanwhile a box of kittens is left on the doorstep. One floats, one tumbles, one send sparks from its tail and the last freezes things with looks from its eyes. She is becoming very worried that she is not able to do the job Mr. Jams has given her. Luckily her pet kitten, Dipity, is able to calm the kittens. She handles a couple of adoptions (a unicorn and a fairy horse) quite successfully. She meats a giant couple who want a pet, but she has nothing for them at the time. The Vetranarian, the giants, the ghost and the Leprechauns all let her know what a great job she is doing. In the end, everything turns out just right. A great story with simple black and white illustrations that give just enough visuals to appeal to children.

Fun read - good sequel.

10yo daughter was so excited to finally get this book and find out what was in the egg! She loved the first book and loved this sequel. She has read it a few times already. Overall and fun read for younger kids. .

A Book for both Boys and Girls

I'm looking forward to more books in this series. It will appeal to the children I babysit- a 7 year-old princess and magic-loving girl and a 5 year-old animal-loving boy! Looking forward to reading both books to them.

Darker and deeper as the series gets to a close

As expected from Joseph Delaney, this latest installment in the Wardstone Chronicles is just as thrilling as all the others. And as the series comes closer to its end, it is darker. Slither, a haizda mage who farms humans for his needs, is introduced and comes to question whether a fierce warrior such as he is beginning to grow soft as he attempts to fulfill a dying farmer's wish (actually, a trade) while at the same time facing ruthless adversaries, the circumstances being a direct result of the actions he took while on a journey with the farmer's three daughters. He meets and works with the witch assassin Grimalkin to prove his innocence in a trial by combat, and what follows seem to lead that we will be seeing him again. Delaney also hints that there might be a connection with one aspect of this story with the final battle that is coming.

I liked how the author dealt with a serious issue such as slavery in this book. Although I liked this story just as much as the others, I miss the Spook, Tom, and Alice. This isn't their story, after all. But, Delaney still gave us a character that we would love to read and know more about.

This book was a different turn from the series, like I Am Grimalkin it is not all focusing on Thomas Ward, Alice and John Gregory.

I found I Am Grimalkin a good move for the series but right now I don't see this book doing the series justice.

Overall it was a good book but i just wont be able to fully understand this book until I read upcoming books in the series.

What the authors term the 12 point Velocity Model they outline in single words that beg exploration of their method: Mindset, Intuitive, Sticky, Missioning, Intoning, Enchart, Become, Fun, People, Mapping, Confidence' and Every Day. Sound strange or far too tangential? Then read this book and take the steps and see how naturally it works.

For example, under `Mindset' - Love Making Mistakes: This is a key idea in Velocity. It is an easy concept to grasp. However, in practice, it can be a challenge to sustain. Most people actually don't like making mistakes. The thought of attempting to speak your new language to a stranger and making a whole bunch of mistakes is quite intimidating. So how do we get around this? We need one more super-powered tool: `The Silly Hat'.. Around the world, you will see people attending Velocity- events wearing silly hats and crazy wigs. Why all the silly hats? Is this some silly gimmick to embarrass people and get attention? The answer is YES. The point is that wearing a really silly hat is so ridiculous and embarrassing that no one will take you seriously. Once you have dealt with the Velocity peer pressure and put on your silly hat, you will be so far past the point of caring about making a few grammar errors in your new language that you really won't care. You might even notice that you are having a lot of fun making mistakes! Around the world, at the beginning of every Velocity event and exercise, we say "Everyone, put on your silly hat." This is the easy way to love making mistakes. There is a deep connection to the brain science of how the silly hats work. Recent fMRI neuro-imaging studies have demonstrated that people learn best when they are relaxed and able to access many parts of the brain and many learning systems. In contrast, noticing an error or making a mistake can only take place using the Reactive System of the brain. This is the part of the brain that `reacts' to danger.'

And on it goes with each of the 12 points of the Velocity Model. Strange openers: sound thoughts and teaching tools. The authors end up with the Four Quadrants of learning - Passive, Active, Group and Social - and by this time (we are in the `Every Day' point of the model) we are having more fun than stress and finding that we are indeed learning the Velocity method.

For more than this cursory introduction to a very learned yet practical book the readers must read for themselves. It is one of the strongest courses in learning a new language (and more entertaining) than is available elsewhere. I am a successful business woman over many years now. I am also a "Cultural Entrepreneurial Explorer" - with a passion for international travel and in finding ways to connect our global family as one. I love language and real communication!

When I was first introduced to "Velocity - Instant Fluency" in 2013 - I had always dreamed of being able to communicate in different languages in other cultures. I wanted a way to develop a true connection - to try to begin to better understand other cultures - with a possibility of better tolerance, understanding and peace. I had tried several times to learn different languages in various ways. Finally - after 2 days of on-site training with "Velocity - Instant Fluency" - I was beginning to do this! I had experienced a process that enabled my brain to relax and to begin to intuitively learn. I was also taught a system that I could begin to use wherever I travelled in the world - to be able to really connect and communicate with people!

I would highly recommend this book - "Velocity - Instant Fluency" - for anyone who wants to be able to really and clearly communicate with other's, to be effective and efficient in their communication, to feel relaxed and confident in communicating and to feel genuine and authentic in their communication. This "Velocity - Instant Fluency" method can be applied personally, within families and communities wanting to learn a new language and/or to revitalize their native language, while travelling nationally and internationally and within global businesses and corporations who want to enhance their business communications worldwide.

I am using "Velocity - Instant Fluency" in some of these area's now – and I look forward to applying this method in other ways too!

You won't get language fluency from reading this book.

I was emailed a digital copy of this curious book, unsolicited, with a request that I review it. It's a collection of principles that are to be applied to learning languages, presented in an attractive manner, and indeed all are good principles, not just for learning language, but for learning in general: Don't obsess. Relax. Try to use multiple modalities and multiple associations to reinforce learning. These aren't new ideas, of course.What you won't find here is a specific program or methodology for learning any particularly language. For that, you have to go to the author's web site, where you'll be directed to a selection of four-day English language fluency courses you can enroll in at a cost of $500. In short, then, this is not a guide to learning languages, but a 160 page sales brochure for a training program.

Amusing, but really only a coffee table book

As is the usual preamble, I received this book as part of a GoodReads giveaway.

For most purposes this rather brief tome is serviceable as a coffee table book. Each entry is given one page devoted to the diagram with a half page of text to describe it. In general the author does a good job of choosing his topics and while most are already familiar to any individual of average erudition there are some new tidbits to be gleaned. As a book to be read from cover to cover it does become somewhat daunting because the author's text is often very brief and very high level and one can never quite settle into any particular topic before being shuffled off rather quickly to the next. The chronological ordering of the book is exactly what one would wish for in such a work and the full breadth of history has considered.

On the constructive side of my observations it seems evident that the author had some difficulty coming around to 100 'diagrams' for inclusion. Many of the entries can only marginally be called diagrams at all (or the diagrams are really only secondary to the significance of the achievement being documented) while others are of dubious significance to begin with. The idea that a sketch for the iPod should appear in a book alongside Copernicus and da Vinci is, in this reviewer's opinion, an affront to any reasonable view on how we could what is significant and what is not in the grand scale of history. Lastly in this vein the text at times seems rushed and perhaps suffers from over-editing. The chosen textual format is so short that no real background can be properly conveyed and the reader suffers a bit from whiplash.

In summary, this book would make a reasonable addition to the coffee table but cannot be considered for any serious reading. It would have been better served as a book containing half as many diagrams but with much expanded text.

Pretty Pictures but...

I agreee with a previous reviewer about this being a (relatively small) coffee table book - nice pictures. However, I only got as far as 1900 BC - Pythagoras' Theorem - before I hit this egregious error: "the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the other two sides". If this is the extent of the author's (and his scientific fact-checkers') skills, I don't think I want it lying on my coffee table.

A perfect gift

This was a beautiful book, readable and inspiring, that can appeal to readers of many levels, with varied interests. If is full of fascinating stories. It not only introduced me and my 12 year old son to some amazing discoveries from history, but it also gave the back story on the diagrams we were already familiar with. The original ipod diagram was one of his favorites. The combination of text and images is very powerful. 100 Diagrams is scholarly, yet accessible. I previously read another book by this author about a runaway slave and can say that this author is a very skilled story teller. While the topic of 100 Diagrams was quite different, it has the same combination of solid historical foundation and entertainment.

The size of this book appeals to me, because, unlike other books with beautiful illustrations, it fits on a normal size bookshelf.

In 1966 Jean Rhys reemerged after a long silence with a novel called Wide Sargasso Sea. Rhys had enjoyed minor literary success in the 1920s and '30s with a series of evocative novels featuring women protagonists adrift in Europe, verging on poverty, hoping to be saved by men. By the '40s, however, her work was out of fashion, too sad for a world at war. And Rhys herself was often too sad for the world--she was suicidal, alcoholic, troubled by a vast loneliness. She was also a great writer, despite her powerful self-destructive impulses.

Wide Sargasso Sea is the story of Antoinette Cosway, a Creole heiress who grew up in the West Indies on a decaying plantation. When she comes of age she is married off to an Englishman, and he takes her away from the only place she has known--a house with a garden where "the paths were overgrown and a smell of dead flowers mixed with the fresh living smell. Underneath the tree ferns, tall as forest tree ferns, the light was green. Orchids flourished out of reach or for some reason not to be touched."

The novel is Rhys's answer to Jane Eyre. Charlotte Brontë's book had long haunted her, mostly for the story it did not tell--that of the madwoman in the attic, Rochester's terrible secret. Antoinette is Rhys's imagining of that locked-up woman, who in the end burns up the house and herself. Wide Sargasso Sea follows her voyage into the dark, both from her point of view and Rochester's. It is a voyage charged with soul-destroying lust. "I watched her die many times," observes the new husband. "In my way, not in hers. In sunlight, in shadow, by moonlight, by candlelight. In the long afternoons when the house was empty."

Rhys struggled over the book, enduring rejections and revisions, wrestling to bring this ruined woman out of the ashes. The slim volume was finally published when she was 70 years old. The critical adulation that followed, she said, "has come too late." Jean Rhys died a few years later, but with Wide Sargasso Sea she left behind a great legacy, a work of strange, scary loveliness. Incredible. I first read Good Morning Midnight after hearing how Rhys could write her way into the reader and lodge there like a ghost, but that book left me disappointed.

I've read Jane Eyre (not required reading for Wide Sargasso Sea) and liked it, so decided to try Rhys again and was bowled over by this book!

If you want to be haunted by what you read to the point where the characters, imagery and overall feeling of the work follow you around for days afterward, Wide Sargasso Sea is the book for you. This is the Jean Rhys I was looking for. Hats off to her. Short, but tremendous.

Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late May while on vacation in Telluride, Colorado.

Once I was aware that this book was a prequel to Jane Eyre about the mad, passionate first wife of Mr Rochester, nothing would keep me from it - outside of a penny-priced copy of it being available on Amazon and it spending months & months stowed away in my bookshelf. So, after much ado, I dove in. It's a little disorienting to read between its dual narration and Antoinette's aggressive, spiteful prose, but it also reminds me of Alice Hoffman's A Marriage of Opposites headstrong heroine and her plight to know herself and who to trust in an almost anti-paradise.

I have written this book in a somewhat unique style. The book's even numbered chapters are a story that takes place in 2011 and it follows the book's principle character (Paul Waring) as he tries to uncover the locations where the lost Confederate treasury has been buried. He does so after finding the remains of a long dead Confederate soldier, and some clues that have been uncovered with these remains, in Murrells Inlet, SC. Helping him decipher these clues are two South Carolina educators (Chick Mann and Jayne Ewald), a friend of one of the two educators (Pete Cater), and a Georgetown County (SC) deputy sheriff (Bobby Ray Jenkins).

The book's even numbered chapters occur during the Civil War, in 1863, and they follow the book's other principle character, Captain Judiah Francis, and his men as they move the Confederate treasury south from Richmond. They are doing so on orders from President Jefferson Davis, and General Robert E. Lee, so it does not fall into the hands of the advancing Union army. As the Confederate treasury is being moved south, Captain Francis and his men are confronted with a series of attacks and tragedies that gradually begin to take it's toll on Francis' men.

While the majority of this book takes places in various locations in North Carolina and South Carolina (Murrells Inlet, Georgetown and Charleston), part of the story also takes place in Virginia, at Gettysburg, and in CT.

Why has it not been found since it was hidden over 150 years ago? Why is the mayor of Charleston and a federal judge now involved with Paul Waring?"

Confederate Gold and Silver

What an enjoyable read, the manner the book was written is compelling especially for a first time author. The book goes from today to the next chapter the civil war explaining how evidence located got to be there. The characters are easy to associate with, and the reader is able to visualize the events. I couldn't put the book down, I wanted to find out what happened next. A great read for anyone civil war enthusiast or not!

Confederate G&S: An Excellent First Read!

Peter Warren's first novel is a triumph! The hunt was on from the beginning. As the main character builds new friendships and personal connections after relocating from the "north to the south" (culture shock!) one can imagine the emotional roller coaster he is on. In the 2011 portions of the story it all ties together.

As well, the 1863 jump-backs-in-time, you can sense Confederate soldiers of Captain Francis' struggling to complete their mission and their fight for survival.

Clues and the ultimate completion of the quest in 2011 is exciting...like a race to the finish!

I can't say much more because I do not want to give away the story. Loved it! Keep writing! Give us more!

Confederate Gold and Silver will hold your interest as the modern day treasure hunters develop the clues to the location of the missing Confederate Treasury. In alternating chapters, the author tells the story of Captain Judiah Francis of the Army of Virginia and his mission to transport the treasury to safety. By the end of the chapters we experience the anguish of Francis as he realizes that his mission will fail. Although there is historical fact supporting many of the events depicted, the reader need not be a Civil War enthusiast to enjoy this book. This book would be a good choice for middle school or high school readers for its themes of duty and honor.

Abnett is Gifted

I didn't like this book nearly as much as First & Only (or Eye of Terror), but it was still a fun read. I really got sucked in to the characters from the first book and wanted to follow their further exploits. While First & Only had a strong plot that held it together, this book is more of a collection of war stories. They read like they may have already appeared in Inferno! (the Warhammer fiction zine). I'm not a big fan of straight combat/action fiction, so this was somewhat disappointing. What saves it is the fact that Abnett is a truly great writer who really rises above this genre of game fiction. The war stories are interrupted by these almost poetic tableaus of the Tanith troops between battles: A soldier obsessively cleaning his gun, the MASH unit quiet and waiting for the coming onslaught of carnage, a General sharing coffee and small talk with the company cook. These bits are very effective counterpoint to the ferocious battles of the surrounding chapters.
I'm hooked. I can't wait for the next "Gaunt's Ghosts" book, I just hope that Abnett spends more time developing a compelling story arc and less time on the battlefield reportage.

A good sequel to Tanith First and Only

Dan Abnett follows up his first Gaunt's Ghosts novel --- Tanith First and Only --- with Ghostmaker and he does a good job to keep fans of the original hooked with the story. It doesn't rise above the original, but the characterization of major and secondary characters are explored abit further.

Ghostmaker also further explains the current Crusade campaign the regiment is on. Politics become an issue as well. Jealousy from other regiments with a more storied history helps add abit of a subplot to the main story. Gaunt and his men are put through the wringer as they accept missions or put into dangerous situations that slowly dwindle their numbers. This is sad and poignant for the fact that without a homeworld to call home anymore, they have no way of replenishing their regiment like other Imperial Guard units. This also means that for every Tanith who falls in battle, more of their homeworld and people's culture disappear. It really adds meaning to the title of Ghostmaker.

I would recommend this book to those who have read the first and still contemplating as to whether to pick up this sequel.

I don't know why people don't like this book, it's awesome!

This is the second book in the Gaunts Ghost series, and while it's not the best Ghost's book, it's still a five star book. With a huge number of different characters in the books, I think this was a great idea for the series. Dan abnett was able to give more dimension to the characters and there past, which he brought to life in First and only.
Yes, this book is pretty much a collection of short stories and each story focus's on a different character. I personally don't like short stories, but the way Ghostmarker was written was awesome. The thing I don't like short stories is there short! they don't leave any time for character development and in less then an hour they are done. In ghostmaker, the short stories were there to show the character, and show their past, and why they are so attached to it.
Gaunt's Ghost is one of my favorite series of novels, and Ghostmaker is a must read for any fan of warhammer 40k or military sci-fi.
