Comprehensive overview of Islamic Philosophy

Unfortunately in the West, even with a lot of first-class scholarship now going on to recover the thought of various periods in the history of both Western and Eastern Philosophy, the course of Philosophy in the Muslim world is relatively unknown. This book, edited by Seyyed Hussein Nasr, gives an excellent and comprehensive history of Philosophy as it has meandered through 14 centuries of Islamic intellectual thought and religious belief.

Anyone who reads this book will quickly realise much of the garbage being said about Islam today as always being a deeply backward part of world civilisation whose essential basis is wars of conquest and terrorism is utter nonsense. Jihadi terrorism itself has its roots in the thoughts of the Egyptian radical thinker and writer Seyyd Qutb, who was disgusted at the excesses of 1950's America, and also to an extent also in the thought of Ayotallah Homeni, the Iranian philosopher and theologian who was deeply influenced by thinkers such as Ibn-Arabi. Yet while these thinkers are important, they only form a small part of the overall very rich tapestry of Islamic philosophical thought, which ranges from schools which followed Aristotle and Plato to mystical schools like those of Ibn-Arabi and Shawradi, and schools which closely examined what would now be called the philosophy of law and politics. Islamic thought also contains a rich tradition in the Philosophy of Religion, which asked questions about what Holy Scripture means and how it is to be interpreted, what can and cannot be said about God, how humans can know God, and so on. Also interesting are Islamic examinations of epistemology, science, and metaphysics, which often contains a range and depth of sophistication equalling that of that found in other world civilisations.

This book is worth reading by any serious student of Philosophy interested to see how humans in another mode of civilisation have attempted to answer the basic questions which seem to puzzle human beings anywhere in the world.

About the Author

Stephen R. Schneider, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. His main areas of expertise and interest include crime prevention, organized crime, and policing and law enforcement. He has worked in the field of crime prevention for more than 20 years as a scholar, researcher, community-based practitioner, consultant, and government policy analyst. Dr. Schneider has assisted numerous community groups in developing and implementing crime prevention plans. He most recently completed a report on how to prevent and control serious and chronic criminal offending by youth and young adults for the Halifax Mayor’s Roundtable on Violence.

About the Author
Jeffrey A. Kottler, PhD, is one of the most prolific authors in the fields of psychology and education, having written over 80 books about a wide range of subjects, many of them featuring his lifelong interest in therapists' inner experience and path to excellence. Jeffrey has authored more than a dozen texts for counselors and therapists that are used in universities around the world and a dozen books each for practicing therapists and educators, many of which represent stories of seminal change. His books have been translated into more than two dozen languages. Some of Jeffrey's most popular books include On Being a Therapist, Learning Group Leadership, Change: What Leads to Personal Transformation, Divine Madness, The Therapist's Workbook, and On Being a Master Therapist: Practicing What We Preach. Those who prefer getting inside characters' heads to figuring out whodunit will enjoy this mystery in Montalbán's series featuring food-loving PI Pepe Carvalho (Buenos Aires Quintet, etc.), first published in Spain in 1976. When the corpse of an unknown man with the words Born to Raise Hell in Hell tattooed on his shoulder surfaces off the Barcelona coast, Ramón Freixas, a hair salon owner, asks Carvalho to investigate. For reasons he doesn't share with the gumshoe, Freixas wants the victim identified. The tattoo's trail takes the detective to Amsterdam, where he figures out the murder was related to the drug trade. Carvalho's cynicism (he divides the world into those who go to jail and those who might go to jail) will make him a familiar figure to hard-boiled devotees. The final twist will appeal to readers comfortable with some ambiguity. (Feb.)

Former cop and current Barcelona PI Pepe Carvalho is content with his life, eating the best foods and dating a high-class prostitute. He only takes on cases that intrigue him, such as that of the tattooed man found washed up on a public beach with no leads to his identity except the tattoo (“Born to raise Hell in Hell”) inscribed across his back. When a local shopkeeper asks Pepe to find out who the man is, Pepe agrees, and soon the trail takes him to Amsterdam, one of his favorite cities. Just as when Carvalho is home in Barcelona, good eating often take precedence over the investigation at hand, and sightseeing only addss to the burden. The slow pace of the investigation is enlivened by Montalban’s descriptions of both Barcelona and Amsterdam, as well as by the fully fleshed secondary characters, from Pepe’s hooker girlfriend to the hairdresser who initially hires him. Recommend this one to fans of Roderic Jeffries’ Enrique Alvarez, the Mallorcan inspector with a taste for good food and slowly paced investigations that easily matches Carvalho. --Jessica Moyer

Pepe Carvalho is a phlegmatic investigator. His greatest concern is with his stomach, but when not pursuing delicacies, he can unravel the most tangled of mysteries. Misleading Assignment

An entry in a popular series about Pepe Carvalho, an unusual character who is a private investigator and a gourmet based in Barcelona, this novel was published many years ago in Europe and more recently translated with grace a couple of years ago. The publisher is to be congratulated in reprinting and releasing "Tattoo" and another, "The Man of My Life" (review to follow shortly), in February, among others in this series. Pepe is a charming rascal, with an intriguing background, having had an apparently successful career before he walked away from the CIA to undertake his more or less relaxed profession in his native Spain.

Pepe is retained for a hefty sum by the husband of a local hairdresser to identify a body pulled out of the sea with a face so badly destroyed that the only identification is a tattoo on the back reading "Born to Raise Hell in Hell." Barcelona police attribute the death to local prostitutes and drug dealers and sweep up these elements off the street. Pepe's investigation leads him to Amsterdam, where the victim worked briefly and apparently was involved with a drug gang. But the mystery is not so simple.

The descriptions of Amsterdam, Pepe's appetite for good food, and observations about Barcelona are all interesting, as is Pepe's sex life and relations with Charo, his long-time love [who happens to be a full-time prostitute with a high-class clientele], among others.

Sadly, Montalban died in October of 2003, but we are fortunate that he left such worthy works behind.

Really good mystery story

"Tattoo" is one of earliest installments in the Pepe Carvalho mysteries by Manuel Vazquez Montalban. Carvalho is a private detective in Barcelona, Spain. In Carvalho, Montalban has created a rather unique character in the mystery genre, as Pepe is a former resolute communist, a former CIA agent, a former political prisoner, a gourmet (particularly as relates to the food in Catalonia where Barcelona is located), and a sort of anti-intellectual who uses the theoretical and political books from his library to start fires in his fireplace. He also has a girlfriend, Charo, who is a prostitute.

In "Tattoo" Carvalho is hired by the owner of a beauty salon to identify a dead man who has been found on a local beach with his face eaten off by the fishes. He has a very unusual tattoo, which is the only real means of identification. This plot involves Carvalho in the seamy side of life in Barcelona and in Amsterdam.

Montalban does a great job with this plot. I was involved in the story at all times. The level of complexity is excellent. The resolution is perfect. The characters are varied and portrayed seemingly with authenticity (what do I know about life in Barcelona, after all?). This is a very good mystery with some great descriptions of gourmet food thrown in. Just a real thumbs up for this book.

entertaining Spanish private investigative Noir

Former Barcelona cop, Pepe Carvalho earns a living as a private investigator. However sleuthing is not on the short list of what he loves. Instead his first, second, third and nth love is women especially gourmet dining with beautiful females. He also enjoys on a summer night to use his fireplace burning a book a night especially if a woman joins him.

Two people swimming off a public beach find a badly devoured corpse as the fish dined on the victim's face. On his back is a tattoo "Born to Raise Hell in Hell". After having a tryst interrupted, Senor Ramon Freixas, husband of Senora Queter the hairdresser salon owner, hires Carvalho to find out who the deceased is though he refuses to explain his interest in the corpse. The sleuth starts with neighborhood tattoo shops that lead Carvalho to Amsterdam where he is persona non grata by law enforcement officials and drug gangs.

This is an entertaining Spanish private investigative Noir starring a wonderful cynic who classifies people as: those in jail; those who should be in jail, beautiful women who cherish his mind and body; and gourmet chefs. Joel Murach has been writing and editing books about computer programming for over 10 years. During that time, he has written extensively on a wide range of Java, .NET, web, and database technologies. When he's not programming or writing books about programming, he can be found surfing or writing music.

The usual Murach's simplicity and quality

I've now read 3 of the Murach's titles - Java 6, Servlets and JSP, and now PHP and MySQL, and I've loved each one.

I have to say I love the Murach's style and organization, along with the clear, easy to understand writing. The organization of having descriptive text on the left side of the seam, and code samples and bullet points on the right side is perfect for both the newbie and the experienced alike, both as a step by step tutorial, and as a very convenient reference for professionals.

As for this particular title, we have a programming language that is pretty easy (PHP), and we also have an overall web platform and database. So the book has to explain general web programming and the difference between client side programming and server side programming, and the http messages that go between the two. And it has to explain database programming and in particular, MySQL, and then how PHP interacts with it. Finally, the book has to explain Apache and what it does as a web server. Then, the book has to tie it all together as a comprehensive whole, presenting it as an overall platform, and explain how to set up a development environment (nice choice in using XAMPP combined with NetBeans with the PHP plugin). It does all of this with the greatest of ease and logical flow, making it exceedingly easy for the newbie and the experienced alike to get up and running quickly, and have a thorough understanding of the the overall technologies.

Then, as an added bonus, and sadly missing in a lot of PHP/MySql books, is thorough coverage of the MVC design pattern, which any web application of any decent size and functionality should implement in one form or another. The book also gives good coverage of object oriented programming, something also missing in many PHP books (OOP is something that has really taken greater hold in PHP over the last 5 years or so). So, not only does the book get one up and running with PHP, Apache, and MySQL easily, quickly, and thoroughly, it also teaches and encourages solid design principles (MVC) and programming paradigms (OOP).

Finally, along with all of the great organization, ease of learning, and thorough coverage of the technologies and programming practice, this book is simply a pleasure to read. Any developer/techie/geek should enjoy it.

This book gets a solid 5 star rating all the way.

But then again, I've come to expect this with Murach's books. I can't recommend "Murach's PHP and MySQL", as well as other Murach's titles, highly enough.

Doesn't keep its promise, but still good for beginners

The book follows the Murach style - on the left pages there is text, on the right pages there are screen shots, code snippets, and short summaries of the text on the left. For experienced programmers it's tempting to skip the entire left pages and focus on the right pages only.

The book seems to be aimed at absolute beginners, as evidenced by the quite basic 6 chapter introduction. After that you'll learn the essentials of PHP and SQL. For experienced programmers there won't be much new information, but beginners will have a field day with these chapters. The book ends with some more advanced topics: security and authentication, sending emails, file handling and image processing.

The book promises that you will "master" both PHP and MySQL. To be honest, it doesn't live up to that promise. It's good for beginners but it doesn't go far enough to call yourself a "master" afterwards. Several topics are handled too briefly, especially regular expressions and database normal forms. These are quite advanced topics yet they take up only 16 and 10 pages respectively. That's simply not enough. Another major flaw is the handling of SQL injection. It's mentioned briefly only once with the suggestion to search the Internet for more information. Given the lack of parameter validation in some examples I fear for security on web sites based on this book alone. One single page pair on the subject would probably have been enough.

Excellent Book

This is an excellent language tutorial and reference on PHP. I'm a big fan of all of Murach's books and this one is no exception. As a C# developer, I needed a book that would clear up the sometimes confusing syntax of PHP without requiring me to wade through a lot of concepts I already understood. This book does exactly that. Murach's unique style of putting explanations on each left page and corresponding examples on each right page is ingeniously simple yet amazingly effective. I frequently scan the sample page first and only read the explanation page when I need further clarification. However the explanation page is always there if you need it. The result is a very fast read. Also, the editing is superb. So far, I haven't encountered any errors in the sample source. Excellent book.
