About the Author
John S. Dempsey is Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice at State University of New York (SUNY), Suffolk County Community College. He also teaches criminal justice and public administration courses at SUNY, Empire State College, where he serves as a mentor for ranking members of law enforcement and criminal justice agencies. Mr. Dempsey was a member of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) from 1964 until 1988, serving as a police officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant and captain. He focused on both patrol and investigations. Mr. Dempsey received seven citations for meritorious and excellent police duty. After retiring from the NYPD, he served as Professor of Criminal Justice at Suffolk County Community College on Eastern Long Island, where he received the college's prestigious "Who Made a Difference Award" for his teaching and work with students. Mr. Dempsey lectures throughout the country on policing and criminal justice issues and is a member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS), the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), ASIS International, the Northeastern Association of Criminal Justice Sciences (NEACJS), and the Criminal Justice Educators Association of New York State (CJEANYS). He has received the Outstanding Contributor Award from the ACJS Community College Section and the Fellows Award from the NEAJS. Mr. Dempsey has written several books on policing and security. He received his Associate of Arts Degree and his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Behavioral Science from the City University of New York, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, his Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from Long Island University and his Master's Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University, the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Linda S. Forst is a professor of criminal justice at Shoreline Community College in Seattle, Washington, where she also serves on the Board of Law Enforcement Training Standards and Education for the State of Washington. Ms. Forst is a retired police captain from the Boca Raton (Florida) Police Services Department, where she served as a patrol officer, investigator, sergeant, lieutenant, and captain. She spent most of her career in patrol, but also worked in investigations, professional standards, training, hiring, and support services. Ms. Forst was the department's first female field training officer, sergeant, lieutenant, and captain. Ms. Forst has extensive training in accident investigation, domestic violence, sexual violence, community policing, and police management. She received numerous commendations during her career and earned numerous gold medals from the state and International Police Olympics. She also served on the board of directors for a local battered women's shelter for many years. An author of numerous magazine, journal, and newspaper publications, Ms. Forst regularly presents at conferences and to community groups. She has written several popular books on policing. Ms. Forst earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice, her Master's Degree in Community College Education, and her Doctorate Degree in Adult Education from Florida Atlantic University. She is a graduate of University of Louisville's Sex Crime Investigation School and Northwestern University's School of Police Staff and Command. Ms. Forst is a member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS), the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC), and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and has instructed for Northwestern's School of Police Staff and Command as well as Palm Beach Community College and Florida Atlantic University.

Perfect textbook for college students.

One of my favorite introductory textbooks. I particularly like the fact that it is easy to read, and the amount of information you learn from this textbook is immense. It is a good textbook that gives basic knowledge about the criminal justice system. It is not about criminology, but rather how crimes occur and what methods are being used to mitigate crimes.

About the Author
Steven J. Heine is Professor of Social and Cultural Psychology and Distinguished University Scholar at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on meaning, genetic essentialism, and cultural influences on motivations. He has published over seventy articles in such periodicals as Science, Nature, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, and Psychological Review. He received the Distinguished Scientist Early Career Award for Social Psychology from the American Psychological Association in 2003 and the Career Trajectory Award from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology in 2011. He lives with his family in Vancouver.

Good overview of some important content in cultural psychology

Good overview of some important content in cultural psychology. New edition took out lots of stuff on attachment and rightly so as there isn't a lot of evidence to support most of it. What I don't like is the narcissistic use of personal experience. Also, can you say SELF-CITATIONS? Heine presents the research as if he invented the field.

To make matters worse, Russia has not ratified the START II Treaty and the U.S. Senate has failed to approve the CTBT. Perhaps even more ominously, the effort to prevent the acquisition of nuclear weapons by nonweapon states is threatened by nuclear tests conducted by India and Pakistan. The nuclear club is growing and its most recent members are increasingly hostile. Indeed, it is becoming ever more difficult to keep track of the expertise and material needed to build nuclear weapons, which almost certainly will find their way into terrorist hands.

Based on U.S. documents, newspapers, and memoirs of key figures, the book dissects the negotiations as they occurred, emphasizing the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, the Strategic Arms Reduction treaties, and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Powaski also considers other events that affected arms control, including domestic politics on both sides and the horizontal spread of nuclear weapons to other states. About the Author

Don Casey credits the around-the-world voyage of Robin Lee Graham, featured in National Geographic in the late sixties, with opening his eyes to the world beyond the shoreline. After graduating from the University of Texas he moved to south Florida, where he began to spend virtually all his leisure time messing about in boats.

In 1983 he abandoned a career in banking to devote more time to cruising and writing. His work combining these two passions soon began to appear in many popular sailing and boating magazines. In 1986 he co-authored Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau Approach, an immediate best-seller, and the book responsible for pushing many would-be cruisers over the horizon.

Today Mr. Casey and his wife, Olga, often cruise aboard their own Old Boat--a 22-year-old, much-modified Allied Seawind. They've done all the work themselves, with no adult supervision.

I don't know where to begin thanking Casey and recommending him at the same time. A feeble attempt follows:
This is the MOST valuable of my 80 or 90 boatbuilding books, hands-down. It doesn't matter what construction material you are using, or what your level of expertise. At the very least, it is a fun, witty, and motivating book. Even if you come out of it with no more knowledge than when you started (I guarantee that will not happen), it will give you the necessary wisdom and motivation to stay the course. It was the first 'boat building' book I ever purchased, and it alone motivated me to stop dreaming about a boat, and to start building/rebuilding one. And it was to this book I turned whenever a project was frustrating (this is almost daily, for the uninitiated--and he explains this, too). It was also the book I used as a primary reference, and it served me very well in the rebuilding of two medium-sized boats. It has since served me equally well in the building of boats from plans, though you will need more than he offers for this (that does not mean instead of this, but in addition to his book, another will be necessary).
Whether you are going to build a boat from scratch, or you are going to refurbish an older boat (he makes a hard sell), this book MUST be read. If you have only one book on your shelf pertaining to the construction/reconstruction/maintenance, this should be it. You will never forget it, and you will recommend it to others as strongly as I am to you. Your boat will feel naked without it.

ESSENTIAL READING FOR BOATOWNERS--Index & Back Cover listed

I think I have over a hundred books on sailing and boating.
"This Old Boat" is my most recent addition, which I bought
simultaneously with another of Casey's books "Sailboat Hull and
Deck Repair". I consider them to be two of the most important
books for sailors that are boat owners.

One can take two routes with
boats, buying new and paying a fortune, or going the inexpensive route
and doing the work yourself. There is something to be said for each.
I'm a sailor, I don't like working on boats. I had my fill as a child
working on my Dad's boat. Nevertheless, I'm presently engaged in
refitting an awesome older boat to modern standards. I love every bit
of it.

Casey's books are essential references for me. I've managed
to pick things up from magazines and working on other boats over the
years, but I still found these books not only insightful and powerful
motivators for me. One job that I have been reluctant to do, a deck
modification project has suddenly become do-able for me. Reading his
book made it clear to me that these jobs are not as hard as they first
seem to be. It is difficult to cut up a nice looking deck, but if you
plan the project right, you can transform your deck layout for
single-handed sailing, fix a de-lamination problem and a multitude of
deck leaks all at one time.

I strongly recommend this book and his
Sailboat Hull and Deck Repair.

Buy these books. Map out a strategy
and then focus on one project at a time. Good luck and smooth
sailing.

Nice read

Rob Higgins HFI book, is probably the best fantasy sport book read. It puts you in the mind of Rob on how he approaches fantasy hockey. This is a book you will page back through the season. It kind of reminds me of the movie the Transporter, Rob gives you rules to follow throughout the season. So I do recommend this book to have. With that said here are the cons and things he needs to add to next years book.

The HFI isn't a value for all fantasy hockey leagues. Example his HFI of Joe Thornton is quite low last season compared to our value system that had him at number 8 best forward at the end of the year. Second is just like fantasy football predraft materials, Rob should add a expert mock draft. People like to see how to apply your rating scale to a draft. Third point is he takes a back seat to giving you an idea on goalies. It is the most important position in Fantasy Hockey. Would like a better breakdown of your top 15 goalies and why. When is it a good time to take a goalie in a draft. Final point is go out on a limb. Tell us who are Core players in your mind, and who are some sleepers.

From the time you receive the book it's alot of search for answers going into the draft. So for a draft book its nice, but falls short. As a good read and a book you can use for this season and many more its awesome. I recommend the book, but don't count on it as the only predraft material going into your draft.

Not meant for Kindle

I want to be clear that my review for this book is for the Kindle version only. I was worried that a book with tables and lists of players and stats wouldn't work well on the Kindle. Unfortunately, the sample you get doesn't show any tables or lists - just text from the first chapter(s).

Well, I was right to be worried.

On the Kindle you can't zoom enough to make the lists of players and stats readable. They remain microscopic in size. I could make out player names, but not any of the stats or projections. I give it 2 stars instead of 1 because the preceding chapters are excellent.

Customer Service allowed me to return the "book" with absolutely no hassle.

I think Rob Higgins is great writer and a great hockey guy so I will be buying the DTB version. Don't bother on the Kindle. Perhaps if you have a Kindle DX or are using the Kindle App for the iPad...

Best Hockey Resource

Each year before the season starts, I diligently prepare for my draft(s). We only play for bragging rights, but we are a competitive bunch. This is the best book that I have found in the last 3 years to cut down the prep time. It's well written and to the point. It's not just a yearly review or projection, it's a sound strategy... advice that you can apply throughout the year to win your pool.
