Be prepared for one maximum ride!

Welcome Back James Patterson! Granted in this book we still put out our views about the world today, (this book he focuses on stem cell research) but at least this time it isn't like his past few books where that is all we focus about is global warming etc instead of the story. And what a story! We have finally started to go back to the first Maximum Ride books that the fans have loved so much. Action packed, and this one...well...I can't even start to spoil it. But I will say, it's one heck of a roller coaster ride that had me going oh no he didn't, to OMG YES!, to NOOOOOO!!!!!!. So you're in for a treat loyal fans, because it's finally coming back to the style we all knew and loved.

Flock Drama is Main focus

This book of the series made me angry, sad, frustrated and a bevy of other emotions as the flock starts to split apart. The fact that they would seemingly so easily split after everything they've been through was upsetting... yet the very fact that this book brought out strong emotions, even if not all positive, shows how invested readers become in all the characters.
This book introduces yet another villainous scientist with a twist of adding a new kid to the flock to causing a love triangle and has more inner flock drama than any of the previous books. Personally I enjoy more action, less soap opera type drama but still I found myself sucked into every minute of it all.

The plot is still a bit crazy and confusing thus the 4 star rating rather than the 5. I almost dropped to a 3 just out of anger for the split but you have to give credit to any book that evokes strong emotions.

Still waiting for things to start clearing up so we can see the bigger picture and how all these crazy twists and turns tie into it but I'm willing to keep reading to find out.

This book should be updated since its last printing.
With that said, it is a good introduction into the area
of EDP Auditing-particularly for college students. It covers
the management framework in the data center, systems development,
the program life cycle, database administration, operations
management, data capture, audit trail controls, evidence
collection and evaluation. The work is written from the EDP
professional's point of view. This text would complement a traditional auditing course by covering the EDP Audit component. It is a bit weak in the telecommunications area; however, the thrust of the work provides a solid foundation in the theory and practice of EDP Auditing for students studying the area for the first time. This book should be taught with a supplemental class project to help students understand how this theory is applied. I would suggest that the author consider an update of the current version to cover more theory of network administration.

A good primer

This book may be outdated, but gives a very good overview of the edp audit discipline. I notice a very critical review of this book but I can submit as a IT Risk Management professional that audit is all about controls and hence there would be mechanisms for checks on data entry or any other IT personnel. Traditional auditors look for controls on business processes and EDP auditors look for controls in IT environment. So, I hope the reader looks at it from that perspective and there is no insult in this case. Its like saying that Police should trust every body and feel that there are no criminals at all. Then why police in the first place?
In conclusion, this is a good book for those who are not very much into IT but are planning to move into this new profession. However for advanced IT professionals, there are other books on IT Audit that they can refer.

Out of date, useless book

This book is so out of date, it commonly refers to the advent of the minicomputer and its potential effects on the business world. Its filled with ot of date theories, and it takes a down right insulting view of computer professionals. It goes as far as saying that data entry personel are unreliable and should not be trusted!

A great subject, ruined by a poor book

It's unfortunate that a subject so deserving of careful attention and exposition as Capital Group, with its second-to-none long term investment record, was recorded by a writer like Ellis. Few people know the investment management business as well as Charles Ellis, and evidently that fact exempted Ellis from any editing whatsoever at John Wiley and Sons. The book is replete with foot notes, asides, and other minutiae that add nothing whatsoever to the story. In fact, many of the footnotes, which often come 3 to 4 to a page and fill up 2/3 of the white space on the page, do not even deal with matters being discussed in the text at the time. Consider this footnote from page 119, in a section describing the introduction of 12b-1 fees:
"37.) While studying for a joint MBA/JD degree at the University of Pennsylvania, Paul Haaga worked part time at Wellington for Jack Bogle--for $6.00 an hour--writing prospectuses and shareholder reports. After graduation, he went to the SEC in Washington from 1974 to 1977, and then joined Dechert, Price & Rhoades, where he became a partner. In 1985, when Jim Ratzlaff heard that Haaga might leave, he called and said, 'If you ever decide to leave private practice, come talk with us at Capital.' With two brothers already living in Los Angeles, the idea of living on the West Coast was 'not out of the question,' and Haaga joined Capital in 1985."
Again, this footnote, reproduced in its entirety, is from a section describing the introduction of 12b-1 fees. Prior to this point in the book, we have not even been introduced to Paul Haaga yet, so we don't know why his career path is relevant to the discussion of 12b-1 fees (it isn't). We are left to wonder, why did the estimable Mr. Ellis choose to include this fact at this point in the book? Does he think that we are so interested in the career path of this particular individual at Capital that we could not wait to read about it 50 pages later?
I could cite another dozen examples of unnecessary footnotes, egregious spelling and factual mistakes, and long asides that distract from the narrative and key points that Mr. Ellis is trying to expose us to, but then I would be subjecting readers to the same level of tedious minutiae as Mr. Ellis. This book is excrutiatingly difficult to read, a real shame given its subject. Ignore the glowing dust jacket reviews from John Neff, Peter Bernstein, Jack Meyer, Abby Joseph Cohen (!), and George J. W. Goodman--these folks are surely old friends of Mr. Ellis, and they clearly could not have finished such a tedious book. They have better things to do.

Great Subject...Lousy Book!

What a great story! Capital Group has one of the most amazing long-term performances and is one of the most unique organizations in the industry! But this book just stinks. I can barely believe the Charlie Ellis wrote this. It's completely disjointed. There's no structure at all. It's like they just published his notes. He skips across generations within a single paragraph. He contradicts himself. About 150 of the 300 pages is fluff and adds nothing to the story. About 1/3 of EVERY page is footnotes that add nothing. He references chapters within the same chapter. It's just terrible. It's obvious the publisher was just in a hurry to get the book out to make a buck off the mutual fund scandal before the hype died off. How ironic that Capital Group takes a long term approach, launching new funds against the tide, while the people at Wiley (by launching this book before it was ready) have shown themselves to be a bunch of short-sighted money grubbers.

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book - it would be the first time that anything comprehensive has been written on the organization. I tried to navigate my way through all of the footnotes and irrelevancies but without much success. There seems to be no real structure to the book. Sure; the overriding message is that the organization is vastly successful, and the author praises Capital throughout. Frankly I'm surprised that the editors didn't intervene and reformat the entire thing from start to finish. A disappointing read - I can only liken it to a textbook without a curriculum, and oh-so disjointed. Oh and BTW - I work here too!

Sunrise - A Song of Two Humans (1927) is a historically pivotal film. A love triangle which dissolves into attempted murder, it was the first film made in America by the celebrated German director F.W. Murnau, who also directed "Nosferatu" (1922). "Sunrise" mediates between German expressionism and American melodrama, the avant-garde and popular fiction, silent cinema and "talkies." A lavish and sumptuous production famous for its vast, specially constructed sets, it was one of Hollywood's most ambitious undertakings. It overwhelmed critics by its sheer beauty, yet cost far more than it earned. Lucy Fisher's book locates "Sunrise" in a range of historical, aesthetic and philosophical contexts.

At sunrise on July 24th, 1715, a convoy consisting of twelve ships set sail from Havana Harbor for the long voyage back to Spain. The convoy was composed of the five ships of the New Spain Flota, six ships of the Squadron of Tierra Firme, and a French ship named Grifon. After the convoy left Havana it made its way up the Bahama Channel. During the night of July 30 it was struck by a fierce hurricane that wrecked all the ships upon the coast of Florida, with the exception of the Grifon, which miraculously escaped. Over a thousand persons lost their lives. The Spaniards commenced salvage operations immediately along the beach of what is commonly known today as Florida's Treasure Coast, so named for the fabulous trove left behind on the wrecks, which continues to lure treasure hunters today. The Spanish salvage effort was quite effective, however, much remains to be found, including the dowry of the consort queen, Isabella Farnese, wife of King Philip V. Robert Marx relates this story to us with an incisive historic background, completed with contemporary details known to him through almost forty years of his own efforts to salvage the wrecks of the 1715 Plate Fleet. This edition also includes a complete reprint of the shipwreck listings found in his original Shipwrecks in Florida Waters, published in 1968 when Robert Marx took over operations for Real 8.

South Omaha turnaround story.

This book is a brief biography of Servando Perales, founder of the Victory Boxing Club in Omaha, Nebraska.

This book will be of particular interest to those who have met Servando and have heard bits and pieces of his story, but haven't heard how it all fits together. It will also be of interest to anyone who is curious about how a good kid can get sucked into the world of drugs and gangs, then be pulled out of that life by God's grace to become a community leader.

His story brings hope to those who are trying to leave the streets behind and follow Jesus. On November 14, 2002, the 100th anniversary of the world famous Teddy Bear will be celebrated. The origin of the Teddy Bear stems from an occasion when President Theodore Roosevelt visited the wilderness of Mississippi in hopes of killing a black bear. He was guided on this hunt by Holt Collier, a former slave, Confederate veteran (yes–amazing though it sounds), Texas cowboy, Mississippi lawman, and noted pioneer. He is known to have killed over 3,000 bear in his lifetime, more than Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett combined. Roosevelt, who also hunted with Collier in Louisiana in 1907, called him "the greatest hunter and guide I have ever known."

Collier killed many white men, several in Mississippi. One exciting incident in his biography is a detailed description of the gunfight at Washburn's Ferry where Collier out-drew the notorious Louisiana outlaw Travis Elmore Sage. He was prosecuted only once–for the murder of a Union captain after the Civil War–but he was acquitted. Collier was famous nationally during his lifetime, but the racial atmosphere in Mississippi for the last eighty years kept his remarkable story from being told. There is no detailed and authoritative work on Holt Collier or the origin of the Teddy Bear other than this book.

Holt Collier was one of Mississippi's most interesting minor historical figures. His life, his presence as a man transcended the times in which he lived. Mr. Buchanan's well written book tells Collier's fascinating story, bringing to life a man little known outside of Mississippi.

I noticed that one reviewer insists that there were no black confederate soldiers. There is considerable history to the contrary. Not only did some blacks fight for the South, but so did Native Americans, Hispanics, and various orientals, particularly men of Filipino origin from Louisiana. I have read that two of the sons of the original Siamese twins, actually part Thai, Chinese and Malay, fought for the Confederacy. In addition to Jewish soldiers, one of the most important members of the Confederate government, Judah Benjamin, was Jewish.

A Great Biography of a Little Known Historical Figure

Although this book would probably be considered politically incorrect by the black community because it relate Collier's devotion to the South and the Confederate cause, it fills a void that's long existed in telling the true history of Mississippi's past. This book takes us through Collier's entire life from slavery through his final years in retirement when he became invisible and forgotten in the annals of history. It also does a good job in telling the story of Teddy Roosevelt bear hunt that led to the creation of the "Teddy Bear" as a result of the Nast cartoon. And it tells us that the legend that grew out of that hunt was in many ways incorrect or an oversimplification of the event.

Minor Buchanan does not approach this as a quick book project to make a few bucks by assembling a collection of anecdotes he collected around the state. He poured all his free time into research for quite a long time before even getting to the point of putting together a cogent retelling of Holt Collier's life. I've had the pleasure of knowing Minor for some years and can say that I have seen how devoted he has been to this project and how much he likes to talk about the history of this unique individual, especially things that he learned that simply couldn't be fit into the book's written word.

Product is different from description, terrible quality

I paid $170 for this book. Every description of it said it was an actual book. I wait, and lo in behold, i get a loose-leaf binder ready edition.

As if to mock me more after having fooled me, the cover says "Your professor has selected this loose-leaf alternative to save you money". My professor didn't select anything. I didn't save any money. I could've just as easily printed a loose-leaf copy off of the pirate bay. And not only did I not get my money's worth, but the pages are thinner than the toilet paper at the new york bus terminal. By the time you finish reading the thing, your bound to have torn out half of it, so it's impossible to resell.

The irony to all of this is that this is your first lesson in economics. Enjoy.

tl;dr: The manufacturer screws you over, then makes sure you can't resell their product.

Clear theories, vague homework questions

I took macroeconomic theory a second time now that I am done with undergrad, and I thought the examples and theories presented in the book were interesting and relevant to current events and debates. However, the book clearly takes a more conservative viewpoint and glosses over many of the challenges facing our society. Overall though it was clear and concise. I did well in the class, but the CONNECT homework questions were a nightmare I had to struggle through. I found multiple mistakes and the questions were worded very unclearly. It makes the assignments take much longer than they need to. I probably wouldn't have succeeded in the class without reading every chapter page by page.
