Inspiring dedication to comics

[[VIDEOID:mo2Q5B9OXK7KGRM]]2010 has seen some great comic artists with their art books getting published. There's Alex Ross, Joe Quesada, Adam Hughes and now Jim Lee. What a fantastic year!

Jim Lee's Icons is a bargain for the price. It's hardcover with 296 pages of amazing artwork printed on good paper. Just one look at the cover and you can tell that it's really good. Publisher Titan Books has done a very good job with the printing and construction.

The amount of work featured is stunning.

Right from page 1, it's a non-stop flow of beautiful artwork featuring the superheroes of DC Comics and WildStorm -- Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc. There are sketches, inks, layouts and full coloured illustrations. Many are printed at full page size, some across two pages, showing off all the intricate line work, grain left by the pencil hatches, details in the characters and background. You won't see any work from his days at Marvel though.

I spent a while on each page marveling at the quality of work, thinking about his dedication to comics. It's really inspiring.

You probably won't get as many page-pausing moments with other art books in 2010.

Highly recommended.

You just can't ask more from a book

Jim Lee is finally honored with a long time deserved perfect quality art book showcasing all of his work (at least at DC and WS).

The reproductions are excellent, same as the paper stock and binding. The design is really well done: you can compare Jim Lee Icons to Alex Ross Mythology and Desperado's The Art Of Brian Bolland and it stands on his own. A beautifull detail is that when you remove the dustjacket you get the same image of cover printed in raw pencils in your hardcover.

Nonetheless I have to say there's a catch with the design of the book: a lot of the images are cropped. I guess it was done to let us appreciate the artwork in an even deeper detail, but I think it would have been much better to reproduce said artwork in its entirety.

But don't let this disencourage you from getting this book, because all in all it's an excellent product and a real must have for any Jim Lee fan and comic art aficionado in general.

A gorgeous first venture into comic art!

I am brand new to the comic scene, but not to comic heroes and characters. After picking up Batman: Hush, I fell in love with the artwork. I mean literally head-over-heels in love! Googling the artist responsible, Jim Lee, I came across this book. I am so very happy I bought it! I wasn't expecting much more than a few pretty pictures and maybe an introduction. I got that and a lot more! A full introduction, notes and/or thoughts on every image, comparison shots of Jim's sketches for staues and figures along with photos of the final product, and even brainstorming sketches compared to the final pieces. My absolute favorite part of this book is the page with two panels of Superman and Batman...along with some snarky comments from Jim ("This image is so wrong on oh so many levels..."). I do wish it included other art of Jim's, especially from his time on the X-Men series, but I do understand why it wasn't included. Maybe that could be something for another artbook like this one (my own wishful thinking).

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to oggle and drool over this book again...

About the Author

Chris Fry has been a member of the Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) at Cisco Systems, Inc for 5 years, focusing on deployment of intrusion detection, network monitoring tools, and incident investigation. He began his career at Cisco in 1997 as an IT analyst, supporting Cisco's production services. His four years as a Network Engineer in Cisco IT's internal network support organization give him valuable knowledge about and unique insight into monitoring production enterprise networks. Chris holds a BA in Corporate Financial Analysis and an MS in Information and Communication Sciences from Ball State University.

Martin Nystrom is an InfoSec Investigations Manager for the Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) at Cisco Systems. He leads the global security monitoring team and provides guidance for incident response and security initiatives. Prior to joining Cisco's CSIRT, he was responsible for designing and consulting on secure architectures for IT projects. Martin worked as an IT architect and a Java programmer for 12 years prior, where he built his experience in the pharmaceutical and computer industries. He received a bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in 1990, a master's degree from NC State University in 2003, and his CISSP certification in 2004.

Useful for the more advanced reader

This book is not an introduction to network, server, or database administration. Neither is it an introduction to security tools or techniques. You need to have a foundational understanding of these areas and seek to build on them through specialization of your base skills. If you need a more introductory book I highly recommend The Tao of Network Security Monitoring: Beyond Intrusion Detection. This book attempts to take you deeper into your network, guiding you to identify the more sensitive, important parts of the network for focused monitoring. The first chapter is just an overview chapter and introduces the fictitious company used throughout the book, Blanco Wireless. Like most tech books, the good stuff starts in chapter two.

The second chapter discusses the wide variety of approaches for selecting the policies to monitor. It then discusses the the environment in which these policies are to be applied. Chapter three explores two primary methods of learning about a network: network taxonomy and network telemetry. Chapter four provides a third and final foundation, guiding you to select broad targets on which to focus your monitoring. Deep, proactive security monitoring is overwhelming and unproductive if it isn't targeted to specific systems. By selecting monitoring targets, you can narrow your focus to the most critical systems, making the most of your security monitoring equipment and staff.

Once you've worked through the steps of defining security policies, you know your network, and you've selected your targets, you can build on that foundation by choosing your event sources. Chapter 5 provides an overview of the various device types and their event sources, how you can collect them, and how you can inspect them for security policy violations. The various choices available are collected into a subset of the best event sources to help you choose the appropriate sources quickly, without becoming overwhelmed in the sea of possibilities. Chapter 6 provides guidance on how you can carefully configure systems that fit your infrastructure, and then tune them so you can detect the real security events.Chapter 7 aims to professionalize your monitoring, preventing gaps that could allow an intrusion to succeed without notice. With these finishing touches in place, you should be able to monitor your systems with confidence.

Chapter 8 is a concluding chapter. It gives examples where monitoring ideals haven't always aligned with practical experience, including the consequences of those deviations from standard rules. It gives the results of two case studies, including how the organizations deployed targeted monitoring. It concludes by stripping down the advice of the book to bare-minimum tasks for each step, leaving you with a checklist to start your own targeted monitoring.

Appendix A gives detailed information on setting up and running a NetFlow collector based on OSU flow-tools, followed by some simple commands to enable NetFlow generation from a Cisco IOS router. OSU flow-tools is a set of open source NetFlow collection utilities.

This book is a good combination of tools, calculations, and advice on organizing your thoughts and strategy for the more advanced user who is familiar with networks and network security. I highly recommend it for that type of reader.

Solid Practical Advice

There is a lot of very practical information packed into this little book, no fluff or filler anywhere to be found. It will defiantly add value to any Network Security Monitoring implementation. This is a perfect book for a Network or System Engineer crossing over into Security. The only complaint is that it is way to pricey for such a small book printed on what feels like cheap newsprint.

Real world view...

This book is a quick read "how-to" book to take your company to the next level. This is a real reality check written with an assumption that the reader is already familiar with networks and security. This book attempts to drive the value home with case studies, maintenance recommendations (yes, you do have to maintain the beast) and scripts to get started, and collected best practices. This is one of the books that get dog-eared and notes in the margin quickly.

A Hot World

If you are looking for a hot sex filled story, than this is it. Surina was kept sheltered from the hedonistic activities of the city around her but that didn't mean her lust could not be awakened by the handsome slave of her father. As they fight for freedom their passion and love grows. I don't usually read Sci-Fi based books so this was a stretch for me but it was fast paced, full of explicit action and kept me reading.

King Kritan of Katarius travels to unfriendly, rival kingdom, Tamonius, in search of his brother, Jaelyn. He is promptly ambushed and sold into slavery. He is purchased by Argyros and taken to Argyros' country estate by the evil, sadistic guard, Dasin.

Surina is the over protected daughter of wealthy senator, Argyros. The 23 year old virgin longs for sexual release. Under guard 24 hours a day for her protection, Surina can't find releif even at her own hand. Surina is unable to contain herself when Kritan shows up as slave to her father. There is an immediate and strong connection and attraction between the two. But has Surina's father promised her to another?

This story is raw and gritty and very dark at times. I love this world that Reagan Hawk has created here. These characters are beautifully written in a twisted and ugly world. In a world where people are sold and bought every minute of the day, a romantic love story can blossom and grow as fate and the gods have decided it should. Thank you Reagan Hawk aka Mandy Roth. I eagerly await Masters of Pleasure book two. BDSM and M/F/M content. (my favorites)

A King's Ransom is a short, highly sexual paranormal fantasy story that is sure to keep your attention till the very end.
This was my first book on the genre and I now I think I'm hooked!
I really loved the idea of cities where public sex without inhibitions is acceptable and the norm...hell, I wish I could live in one! I also really liked the idea that sexual energy is required to perform higher magik and I especially loved the way the double penetration was presented...like there was no other option. I only wish there was more of it!
The plot was just right in this story and the characters, although not really relatable due to their strange powers, were super hot! The pacing was quick which made it a perfect read for a hot afternoon. I couldn't put it down till it was done...and then I wanted more!
I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be looking for more of Reagan Hawk's work.

About the Author
Thomas G. Robertazzi is an associate professor of electrical engineering at Suny at Stony Brook. In recent years, he has taught telecommunications and data networking courses at Suny at Stony Brook, The Cooper Union, and in industry. Since 1993 Professor Robertazzi has also been faculty director of the Stony Brook Interdisciplinary Program in Science and Engineering. Professor Robertazzi's research interests lie in the performance evaluation of computer and communication systems. He has published extensively in the areas of parallel processor scheduling, ATM switching, Queueing networks, Petri networks, and multihop radio networks. In the area of performance evaluation, he has written one book, coauthored a second, and edited a third. Professor Robertazzi has served as an editor of books for the IEEE Communications Society and as an associate editor of the journal, Wireless Networks.

Surprisingly Brief and Lacking in Substance...

This book is more like a short pamphlet. It typically gives nothing more than 1 (!?!) short sentence in answer to each question, without explaining the J2EE technologies in any detail whatsoever. I skimmed through it in just a few minutes. It is so lacking, I wonder if I am missing something. In my opinion, it is not worth the $9.99 I paid for it... $0.99 is probably more appropriate. I want to be fair and give the author the benefit-of-the-doubt, but I feel the author just wrote this to make a quick buck. I don't much like writing negative reviews, so sorry ... please forgive. Don't say I didn't warn you, though.

I love step-by-step craft books - I'm a visual/experiential learner - and books such as Dick Armstrong's pyrography manual are perfect for me to learn a new skill.

The author is a pyrography legend in the Pacific NW, and it's priceless to see his technique so thoroughly detailed.

Good investment for beginning and experienced woodburners.

Calvinism: A Southern Baptist Dialogue

I bought this book to better understand the whole Calvinism debate, and was richly rewarded. One of the best aspects of the book is the "Glossary of Some Important Theological Terms" in the back of the book.

The book is a collection of articles from various theologians on a variety of subjects related to Calvinism. For each subject, two articles are offered, from opposite viewpoints. Not all the articles may interest everyone, and you can pick and choose which ones you read, as I did.

The only drawback to the book might be that it is written primarily to Southern Baptists, although I think Christians from other evangelical denominations would benefit from this great resource that explains the issues in the Calvinism debate.

Balanced Discussion on Critical Topic

This book is very detailed, but this dialogue is desperately needed. This book is balanced and fair to both sides. Whichever viewpoint one holds, it is important to understand that many Evangelicals don't know either side of this argument and in fact don't hold either of these traditional views. Our lack of Scriptural knowledge is a serious matter for Evangelicals. This book will inform you about both traditional views and ground you in Scripture and give you an historical perspective. To quote Cicero - "To not know what happended before you were born, is to forever be a child."

DO NOT BUY KINDLE VERSION

I was greatly disappointed by the quality of this book. I bought the kindle version, hoping my daughter could play it from iPad or Kindle - either platform - but we were sadly disappointed. The music is tiny and of horrible resolution, and the lines are spaced so you may have two lines to a page and the duet part interrupts the main piece. Resizing it doesn't work - it becomes a picture, versus a flow you can play from. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK ON KINDLE. We have the 1a book in physical form, and really enjoy it - but DO NOT BUY THE DIGITAL VERSION. You will be disappointed.

She provides a straightforward explanation of Kabbalah and then offers a brief history, beginning in the 12th and 13th centuries, when the canonical text of Kabbalah, the Book of Zohar, appeared. Next, she sets forth key principles of Kabbalah and examines the text of Genesis to demonstrate the techniques Kabbalists use to unearth deeper meanings in received traditions. This latest entry in the "Simple Wisdom" series has the courageous goal of attempting to make the notoriously forbidding practices and ideas of Jewish mysticism of the Kabbalah "simple." Zetter, a longtime journalist on Jewish and Israeli topics, has done an admirable job making Kabbalah accessible, with clear descriptions of the history of Kabbalah, its theology, and of the mystical Tree of Life at its center. Highly recommended, especially for collections where Jewish topics are in demand.

A better title might be Jewish Mysticism for Dummies. Zetter, sometime contributor to the Los Angeles Times and Jerusalem Post, summarizes Jewish mystical teachings for an audience of nonspecialists and seekers. Her first five chapters provide an adequate introduction: she walks readers through some of the key kabbalistic texts, and we also meet figures from the history of Kabbalah. Readers will become acquainted with a few central kabbalistic conceptsthat God created and destroyed seven worlds before ours, that creation is ongoing, that God created the universe through ten ``emanations'' or ``forces'' (sefirot). The volume culminates in a final chapter about ``practical Kabbalah.'' Here, Zetter falls down. Ostensibly addressing the relevance Kabbalah has to postmoderns, the book degenerates into holistic pap: ``When we exhibit lovingkindness, we heal the world because acts of lovingkindness bring unification''; ``To experience a Gevurah [strength] consciousness, Kabbalists advise us to examine areas of our life that are out of balance . . . eating too much or watching too much TV . . . . Instead of eating a bag of potato chips for an evening snack, we might want to opt for something healthier.'' Instead of exploring, say, the ways Jews in the Jewish Renewal movement are integrating kabbalistic teachings into their worship services, Zetter ends on a weak note: Random Acts of Kindness with a faintly Jewish flavor. cabalists do it better

Kim Zetter details the estoreric teachings of the Cabala in simple, yet detailed writings. This book is great for the beginner or for anyone looking for some info on the teachings of Cabala because it is very thought-out and informative. I first became interested in Cabala a few years ago. I was riding on a train and started talking to a lady sitting next to me who told me about these wonderful teachings. Unfortunately for me, and for people like me, there weren't many resources besides this book. I have seen and read other books but they were rather complicated and difficult to understand. This book taught me many things. One of the main messages I learned is that no book holds the key to happiness. I do not believe Cabala is a secret answer or cure for anything. Rather it will enhance your life if you invite it in.

A Delightful Read

A delightful read with clarity that belies its size and page count, Simple Kabbalah is just that. An easy to understand, insightful and educational book on a very intricate and complicated subject. Detailed yet comprehensible, most every aspect of this mystical art is touch upon and illuminated. Though reading this book will not make anyone an expert on Jewish Mysticism, it conclusively dispels many of the misconceptions about Kabbalah and give an excellent historical account of its inceptions and beginnings as well as its current place and posture in today�s world. All objectively and readily. Very well written in concise chapters with excellent illustrations, this is a great place to begin a journey into Kabbalah or to refresh your knowledge of this mystical art. You don�t have to be Jewish and you don�t have to be a scholar to enjoy and learn from this charming little book.
