Machine Learning: The New AI (The MIT Press Essential Knowledge series), by Ethem Alpaydin

Today, machine learning underlies a range of applications we use every day, from product recommendations to voice recognition -- as well as some we don't yet use everyday, including driverless cars. It is the basis of the new approach in computing where we do not write programs but collect data; the idea is to learn the algorithms for the tasks automatically from data. As computing devices grow more ubiquitous, a larger part of our lives and work is recorded digitally, and as "Big Data" has gotten bigger, the theory of machine learning -- the foundation of efforts to process that data into knowledge -- has also advanced. In this book, machine learning expert Ethem Alpaydin offers a concise overview of the subject for the general reader, describing its evolution, explaining important learning algorithms, and presenting example applications.Alpaydin offers an account of how digital technology advanced from number-crunching mainframes to mobile devices, putting today's machine learning boom in context. He describes the basics of machine learning and some applications; the use of machine learning algorithms for pattern recognition; artificial neural networks inspired by the human brain; algorithms that learn associations between instances, with such applications as customer segmentation and learning recommendations; and reinforcement learning, when an autonomous agent learns act so as to maximize reward and minimize penalty. Alpaydin then considers some future directions for machine learning and the new field of "data science," and discusses the ethical and legal implications for data privacy and security.

Very basic but good price point for a non technical overview and very up to date with big data
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
This book is an introductory overview of Ethem's detailed text on ML. The text itself has gotten mostly mixed or bad reviews due to a lot of math and algorithms notated without a lot of detailed explanations, however, this is a general reader intro and doesn't go into math, algos in detail, trees, Bayesian logic or even pseudocode, it is more an up to date overview of the field as it exists at this writing. Alpaydin's expensive text, btw, is also available in a very inexpensive Asian edition here on Amazon if you want to brave that difficult book without a lot of investment (Introduction To Machine Learning 3Rd Edition).

The present volume is sortof a "ML for Dummies" only updated for the current craze with big data management. There is a lot of history and background that an experienced ML person will find too basic, but as a High School intro or general interested reader intro it is excellent. The chapters (only 7) begin with a history of computing in general, go into model fitting and stats explaining how big data has changed ML, pattern recognition specifically related to speech and facial recognition, neural nets and the brain as a model (without going into specific XOR or other examples that show, for example, how simple Python code can execute the basic steps of NN. There are Kindle volumes that do that very well: two of the best are: Introduction to the Math of Neural Networks and Code Your Own Neural Network: A step-by-step explanation. Along those lines, one of the best albeit expensive "try it yourself" volumes in NN is the wonderful: Make Your Own Neural Network, truly a hands on volume that even beginners can master.

The fifth chapter goes into clusters and argues that the old "AI" of expert systems which disappointed so many has now been salvaged by ML, Data Science and Big Data. The book concludes with some speculations on the future.

There are literally hundreds of books and texts on ML, but many of them are too complex and expensive (like Ethem's actual text albeit the Asian economy edition helps), or out of date. This great little intro fills a gap between the too detailed and the out of date if you want a good intro without any math or programming to the general field, put in context, with more up to date overviews of the interaction between learning algos and big data, which is the direction AI has taken now. Highly recommended for the right audience, not for techies, swings the pendulum to the far other side of Alpaydin's actual text (although partially based on it) which has been criticized as too technical. This is far from that.

TIP: Since this doesn't have math or code, ie no Latex or symbolic notation, it is ideal for a Kindle read, which is not true for a lot of the more technical texts-- just to save you a bit of investment.

No technical usefulness and odd style
By Mark on Amazon
The writing wanders around, the analogies don't quite fit, and it has no technical usefulness. I found it annoying to wade through what seemed like jumbles of ideas lumped together in paragraphs. Simple ideas are drawn out over long stretches of text and the style of writing is just strange in places.

By Amazon Customer
I am quite confused about what to feel about this book, if you are looking for a completely non-technical text giving a brief overview this book certainly does fit but if you are searching for a light introduction (like me) to machine learning field including the methodologies and the theory as well this book is a no go.

A lovely summer read
By Roso
After finding her boyfriend in a compromising position with another woman, Laurie decides to leave London behind and head home to Cornwall, to Sunset Bay and her sister. Mia Chapman has made a success of both she and her grandmother’s dreams in running Dolly’s Diner, a spot where the locals, and the visitors love to hang out. She’s not that thrilled to see her sister Laurie return. As far as Mia’s concerned, Laurie bailed at a time when Mia and her family needed Laurie most. Coming home now won’t change anything. Or will it? Once as close as only sisters can be, Laurie tries to find a way back into her sister’s heart. This is a lovely story, with Cornwall as a backdrop, and two sisters who finally find their way home

Review: 'A Home in Sunset Bay' by Rebecca Pugh
By Jody - "A Spoonful of Happy Endings"
Ever since the death of her beloved grandmother, Mia Chapman has run Dolly's Diner, the 50s style diner her grandmother started and loved with all her heart, in the lovely Cornish town of Sunset Bay. Mia has developed the same kind of passion for the diner and couldn't imagine living or working anywhere else. But Mia's life is suddenly disturbed when her older sister Laurie, whom she has hardly spoken to in years, arrives in town, looking for her. Laurie has been through quite a rough patch; no longer enjoying her London life, including her job and a cheating boyfriend. So, she decides to flee to Sunset Bay, hoping Mia will be able to help her out, even if it's just for a few weeks. However, Mia is still angry with her sister and not quite yet ready to forgive for something that happened in the past... Will they be able to work it out or will Laurie be forced to return back to where she came from?

It's always great to discover new authors whose stories leave me with a smile on my face and that's definitely what Rebecca Pugh's recently released 'A Home in Sunset Bay' did! This was the first book of Rebecca's that I've read, but it definitely won't be the last. If you're looking for a warm, lovely, captivating chick lit/romance read; look no further! 'A Home in Sunset Bay' focuses on the lives of sisters Mia and Laurie and is set in the small Cornish town of Sunset Bay. The setting is wonderful; it's cosy and just the typical type of small town where the people know and watch out for one another; I loved it and wish I could visit Dolly's Diner myself for a delicious piece of pie! It was easy to warm to both main characters Mia and Laurie and their stories were interesting, especially with the addition of secondary characters such as cooks Cal and Marco and waitress Polyanna.

The novel is quite fast-paced, which I really enjoyed. It doesn't focus on a few days but several months, giving the reader the chance to really see the characters develop and experience different things. I do think just a few extra twists could have been added to the storyline here and there, but I still really enjoyed it and was sad to leave the characters behind at the ending of the book. I already really look forward to checking out more of Rebecca's work and think she's a promising new voice within the genre! Overall, 'A Home in Sunset Bay' is a cosy, warm and uplifting story about family and friendship; a simply lovely read!

Ever since my friends read and loved her debut novel Return to Bluebell Hill
By Irena
I had Rebecca Pugh on my radar for quite some time. Ever since my friends read and loved her debut novel Return to Bluebell Hill, I just knew I had to check her out.
I'm not gonna lie to you: I went into this story with pretty high expectations.
Reading this book was like watching the life go by trough the mist. I could see things happening, but I never got involved enough to gasp, swoon, wonder what's going to happen or even feel, to be perfectly honest with you.
The writing style is pretty good and it do keeps you interested, but at the same time it does not sort itself out with it's beauty or uniqueness. Unfortunately, in my copy of this book, I didn't underline any sentences from this novel. Not because I was lazy to take notes, but because I didn't find any that appealed to me.
I would say that Pugh's style is detailed, but not too detailed. I think she managed to handle some situations in this book really good (like the cheating scene, where her character doesn't know how to react, and the writer makes us sympathise with the character but at the same time there is still that chick-lit feeling to it).
I also need to emphasize how perfectly the writer described the surrounding of the story. I think the scenes were captured pretty well and it almost felt like I was there at some moments (my favorite was how Dolly's Diner was described. Trust me, I am not lying when saying I wanted to be there).
Characters were likeable but not one of them made me care enough.
Still, there was one character that I didn't like, who was also a love interes tin the story. I think he was a s***ty boyfriend to his girlfriend and emotional cheater, so of course I wasn't satisfied that he was the only candidate for one of our main characters.
The story plot was predictable and, although I don't mind it in some cases, it felt like there wasn't enough drama or action trough the story to keep me satisfied. Some things that supposed to be issues between characters weren't that big of the deal in my eyes. Plus, I questioned the law aspect of this story, but since I am not from the same country as characters of the book, I don't think I am in the position to judge.
All in all, since this is only the second novel written by Rebecca Pugh, I think she has a lot of time to grow as a writer and I do believe she will only get better with time. I am looking forward to see where her writing career will take her and read more stories by her.

Valley of Shadows, by Phoenix Emrys

Ellery James, a celebrated author of historical romances, shuns the spotlight, preferring the solitude of his small town sanctuary to risking media scrutiny. He harbors a closely guarded secret that is not only the bane of his existence, but the source and inspiration of his bestsellers. His strictly proscribed existence goes south and sideways when the grimly dangerous Boone Dantrell blazes into Ellery's life. Ellery is alarmed to experience a tentative but undeniable connection to the haunted, mysterious stranger with secrets of his own, and the burgeoning attraction between them grows almost as swiftly as the danger dogging Boone. They've barely met before their secrets and worlds collide, thrusting them both into unimaginable peril. The battle they must wage together spans this world-and the next-and losing it could cost them not only their lives, but their very souls.

A damn good read
By A. Speed
This is a warm paranormal romance, between a reluctant "ghost whisperer" (and fighter), and a man overcome with grief and personal demons. The set up for the ghosts and other supernatural elements is intriguing, and the narrative voice has a nice bit of snark to it, which is always a plus in my book.

Can a man who sees dead people find love among the living?
By Julie L. Hayes
Ellery Joyce James is a literary success--copies of his latest bestseller are flying off the shelves. His exuberant agent Max--short for Maxima--is dying to know what Ellery is working on now, but he isn't talking. Largely because he hasn't started it yet, something he's not about to share with Max.

Max nags at Ellery to get a bodyguard, but he is adamantly against the idea. He's moved from New York to the small town of Birchwood, having been left a huge house there in someone's will. He prefers his solitude, even if Max does think the former bed & breakfast is a monstrosity. But it suits Ellery just fine, for many reasons.

Ellery has a rather unique talent that no one suspects--he can see and communicate with the dead. Which makes it difficult for him to go out in the world--there are so many of them, it's rather overwhelming. In Birchwood, he's far less likely to find them. Plus he has his own little old lady ghost, Mrs. Sheridan, who screens access to Ellery. Still, he tries to help the ones he sees. Usually what they want is to send a last message to a loved one, often giving important information that was never passed on in life.

On his way to the diner, Ellery is almost run over by a handsome maniac in a pick-up truck, whose passenger is a pretty little child--who happens to be dead. When he runs into the pair at the diner, the little girl beseeches Ellery to please help her father. Normally, these are the types of situations Ellery works hard to avoid. But something about this one makes him reconsider. He just might be sorry he did.

The story is told in Ellery's POV, in his voice, and I came to really get to know and like him. There is much more to Ellery than meets the eye, likewise with this story. Just when you think you've figured it out, another layer is revealed.

This is not your typical boy meets boy and falls in love tale. No, this is more like boy meets potentially homicidal maniac and fears for his life--so why is he so strongly attracted to him?

Besides Ellery and Boone, there is a supporting cast of supernatural characters you will come to love. I didn't feel, by the end of the book, that I knew Boone as well as I wanted to, but I feel like I know Ellery. He's funny and bright, at times self-deprecating, and he has a huge heart.

This multi-layered story was over too soon for my taste. I can only hope and pray there is a sequel in the works. This is my second read by this author, and certainly not my last. Well done, Ms. Emrys, well done!

After review, I found it's really comprehensive and concise to understand how health professionals make clinical decisions and solve problem in daily lives. However, someone needs to have basic philosophy of education.

Hit and Run, by Nancy Griffin, Kim Masters

Hit and Run tells the improbable and often hilarious story of how two Hollywood film packagers went on a campaign to reinvent themselves as studio executives -- at Sony's expense. Veteran reporters Nancy Griffin and Kim Masters chronicle the rise of Jon Peters, a former hairdresser, seventh-grade dropout, and juvenile delinquent, and his soulless soul mate, Peter Guber -- and all the sex, drugs, and fistfights along the way. It is the story of the ultimate Hollywood con job and the standard by which every subsequent business blunder has been measured. Hit and Run delivers rock-solid business reporting liberally laced with inside gossip and outrageous scandal -- plus a new afterword bringing us up to date on the latest fallout from the Guber-Peters legacy.

Amazon.com Review
If there is a more archetypical tale of Hollywood in the '80s than the buccaneers' adventures of Jon Peters, Barbra Streisand's former hairdresser, and his business partner Peter Guber, it hasn't been written yet. This thorough, stylish book recounts the rise of Peters and Guber, who together earned fortunes by schmoozing their way to the top, seducing gullible investors, and shoving aside the filmmakers who actually turned out successful films like "Rain Man" and "Batman." The Japanese executives at Sony, in this delightful insider account, were just the most recent and most hoodwinked in a long line of Peters' and Gubers' dupes.

From Publishers Weekly
This is basically the story of two boys who never grew up, but ended up running Sony-owned Columbia Pictures into the ground. Peters, whom the Los Angeles Times described as a "seventh-grade dropout and reform school graduate who began his show-business career as Barbra Steisand's hairdresser-boyfriend-manager," was a master at self-promotion; only semi-literate but able to count well enough to make it big in Hollywood. Bostonian Guber earned several academic degrees before "going Hollywood," somehow managing to indifferently run several studios and make high profits and only a few good films. This book will leave film fans drooling at charges that Peters hired Heidi Fleiss's prostitutes as gifts and that he either bedded or assaulted his numerous conquests (Jacqueline Bisset and Lesley Ann Warren, among others). Guber, the quintessential New Age yuppie, is seen heading off his divorce because it would cost him too much, and participating in hand-holding group-therapy sessions with business-partner Peters. The business side of this book is also intriguing, recounting internecine financial twists and turns that finally have a top Sony executive exclaiming: "Huh! You bankrupt Sony!" Griffin, the West Coast editor of Premiere magazine, and Masters, a reporter for the Washington Post, present a shocking read that will have readers gasping at the obscene overindulgence of Hollywood. From Library Journal
This unauthorized account of Tinseltown madness features the disastrous duo of corporate executives from Columbia Pictures and their alleged bilking of Sony. With the skill of a slick salesman, narrator Ron McLarty partially succeeds in palming off the hearsay testimony about Sony's ill-advised Hollywood venture. McLarty's off-the-cuff manner enhances the tantalizing, juicy gossip served up by authors Griffin and Masters. The convincing descriptions of the grotesque displays of wealth by the chairmen pitted against the staggering $3 million loss that Sony swallows will undoubtedly titillate some. However, the shock value this program packs can't make up for the lack of good journalism. Most libraries can pass on this one.?Mark P. Tierney, The World Bank, Washington,

The funniest non-fiction book you will ever read
By 718 Session
I read this book three years ago and I'm still laughing.
Griffin & Masters have created THE required reading book on everything that is wrong with Hollywood. They were able to tell the inside stories of multi-million dollar deals and make them understandable. Jon Peters, a barely literate hairdresser who happened to be friends with Barbara Streisand, and his business partner Peter Guber schmoozed their way through the 80s and were picked by Sony to run their newly acquired Columbia/Tri-Star pictures. Billions of dollars in losses later (Last Action Hero, I'll Do Anything) they got kicked out.
It is really an incredible story. If it was fiction, you'd think it completly impossible to believe, but it is all true.

A compelling tale of a great Hollywood tragedy
By A Customer
The authors have done an amazing job of compiling an incredible amount of information and assimilating it in a well-thought out and informative manner. The story of how Jon Peters and Peter Guber were able to so completely screw Sony is unbelievable. Yet, Kim Masters and Nancy Griffin boil all the subplots down into a manageable and compelling story that is completely accessible. It isn't often that a non-fiction book reads like a novel. An absolute must-read for anyone interested in the film industry.

As frightening as The Exorcist.
By William E. Hunter
This is one of those must-read Hollywood exposes, along the lines of "The Battle for Brazil" and "Indecent Exposure". It recounts the truly amazing story of how two small-timers in the business, Peter Gruber and Jon Peters, somehow rose to the top of the industry and headed Columbia Pictures for Sony...taking them on an incredible ride of excess and mismanagement. The real villan here though is Sony's seemingly endless series of bonehead moves during their purchase of Columbia, overpaying billions and putting their trust in two of the greatest flim-flam artists in Hollywood. Not only do they grossly overpay during the purchase, but they continue to pay and pay and pay...it really does boggle the mind. It's a ringing examination of the dangers of multi-culture dealings, and an entertaining, and truly frightening, trip through the Hollywood movie machine.
