Philosophy Made (Almost) Easy
By EZ
I used this text in an Intro to Philosophy class and have referred back to it many times. It's laid out well, sprinkled with useful quotes, broken down into manageable sections and each chapter has a useful summary.

Unusual perspective - not a first introduction
By Jen Badham
This is an interesting book. It is superficial but thought provoking, easy to read and broad in scope, as befits an introduction. There is also a strong focus on the meaning of life questions, so spiritual and ethical issues are more likely to be included than social, political, scientific and other philosophical topics, which may make it more or less engaging for certain readers.

However, it would be much better as a third or fourth philosophy book, rather than a first introduction to philosophy. The reason is that it is structured by philosopher rather than issue or topic. This makes it difficult to compare arguments and deeply engage with the issues. While there are questions for further consideration, there is little information available to deeply engage with them. The advantage of the 'by philosopher' organisation is that the book provides an excellent sense of the way in which each philosopher thought and how they understood their world. A reader already familiar with the arguments would get more out of this approach as the book would provide context and coherence rather than merely repeating arguments to which he or she has already been exposed.

Interesting approach to an introduction to philosophy text
By Doug Erlandson
"Archetypes of Wisdom" by Douglas J. Soccio is neither a single-author text or an anthology. It's somewhat of a hybrid, which makes it different from most introductory philosophy texts (which generally fall into one of the two aforementioned categories).
Much of the writing is Soccio's own, but he also includes snippets of primary-source material.

Soccio focuses primarily on just a couple philosophers from each era. Because of this, other philosophers of significance, although their views are described briefly, tend to get short shrift. For example, in discussing British Empiricism, Locke and Berkeley get fairly brief mention, while Hume's views on a variety of issues are discussed in detail. (Other philosophers of the period, such as Thomas Reid, are not mentioned at all.) Similarly, the twentieth century is represented by Wittgenstein and Heidegger. While it is true that they were both influential thinkers, so were a number of other philosophers (such as Bertrand Russell), who would have been equally good representatives of the era. While this is a drawback it does not significantly detract from the overall value of this book.

short, sweet adn to the point.
By MRS M D ATTENBOROUGH
Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian I Dig Good Books. I received this copy from Goddess Fish Promotions in exchange for my review.

Branwyn hires Eirik to secure her safety when her brother wants to arrest her and try her for witchcraft. Eirik needs said witchcraft skills to left a curse: any woman who touches him is instantly smitten, but its not true love, and thats what Eirik craves. Branwyn's attraction to Eirik is instant, and powerful, but that is BEFORE she touches him. After, she is out of her mind with need. Once Branwyn knows of the curse, she makes sure to stay away from Eirik. An incident with mermaids causes Branwyn to use her power, and in doing so lifts the curse. But the sorceress who hit Eirik with the curse in the first place is nothing if not determined to get what she wants, and what she wants is Eirik, and New Dorset, gateway to Valhalla.

SHORT: only 89 pages, 40 minutes reading time for me, but an enjoyable 40 mins all the same.

SWEET: its almost totally clean, like squeaky clean. Just some kissing. Some minor tussles with mermaids and wolves but nothing graphic.

TO THE POINT: It says what it needs to say and not much else. I liked that! some short stories feel rushed, and have gaps in the story line, and is over before you know it. While I did think this might well have worked as a longer book, I didn't feel it was rushed or had gaps.

If you like Vikings, magic, short stories, clean and violent free, this is for you. I'd let my 13 year old daughter read it, if only she would listen to me when I tell her about good books!

4 stars

This is a story I would not hesitate to read again!
By Linda Townsend
“I am not a witch! I am a healer,” she cried. “There is a world of difference between the two."

“Call yourself whatever you will, Branwyn. Your powers do not scare me. In truth, I sought you out a-purpose in the hopes you would heal me from the effects of a spell. ‘Twas cast on me by a wretched sorceress when I refused her…ah…advances.”

Fearing another trap, Branwyn stared at the ground. “Methinks you mistake me for another. I am naught but a lowly healer, cast off by an overzealous brother in a fit of religious fervor. Wh-why do you ask me such things, m’lord?”

“Very well,” Eirik snapped and pocketed her wand. “If you wish to indulge in games, at least choose one that gives me equal pleasure. By Thor, I’ve been long without a woman.” He closed the distance between them and hauled her into his lap.”

VIKING FOR HIRE by Jo Grafford was an excellent, quick, wonderfully witchy historical romance! I've been going thru witch withdrawal since reading PROTECTING HIS WITCH and this little treasure was exactly what the doctor ordered to remedy what ailed me! I am so thrilled to have come upon it. It is the first book I've ever read by Jo but it certainly won't be the last as I am resolved to check out more of her works soon.

VIKING FOR HIRE was both romantic and action-riddled, replete with Viking pirates, mermaids, evil sorceresses, wolves and witches! I love fairy tales and this was a fast-paced magical treat without a single dull moment. I can honestly say that my attention never wavered from the first scene to the last. As to the heat level, there was some kissing but no hanky panky - so this book is appropriate for young adults on up.

My full review is posted at Reading Between The Wines Book Club. Check it out there.

Generally, such a short story wouldn't rate 5 Wine Glasses... but this one deserves it!

Take a Viking with a curse, mix with witches and vicious mermaids, mix well. Results? An amusing, entertaining quick-paced read
By BOOKTALK WITH EILEEN
My Thoughts: I’ve read two other books from this author which I absolutely loved. Breaking Ties and Trail of Crosses, both from the Lost Colony Series based on a historical event. So I was expecting much the same on this one, but it surprised me.

Her story setting has Eirik, a Viking, offering to aid Branwyn, in protection against her religious brother ready to accuse her of witchery. As it happened Eirik was looking for this particular witch, for his crew had heard about this woman and he was in great need of her services. He had a curse to reverse. Eirik carried her off from the tavern when he saved from her brother. Follows an amusing scene with her brother and his men chasing her through the town to the ship dock.

Branwyn finally admitted she had powers and could help Eirik. They must seek some mistletoe for her potion to cure Eirik from a curse a sorceress, from spite, bestowed on him. Even though Branwyn was saved from her brother’s over zealous views, she almost lost her life on the sea when attacked by mermaids on their way to New Dorset.

This light and quick-paced read amused with good and evil witches, mermaids, a powerful attraction between Branwyn and her Viking and an exciting, dangerous trip on the seas in a Viking ship.

Earth Unaware (The First Formic War), by Orson Scott Card, Aaron Johnston

A hundred years before Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, humans thought they were alone in the galaxy. Humanity was slowly making their way out from Earth to the planets and asteroids of the Solar System, exploring and mining and founding colonies.

The mining ship El Cavador is far out from Earth, in the deeps of the Kuiper Belt, beyond Pluto. Other mining ships, and the families that live on them, are few and far between this far out. So when El Cavador's telescopes pick up a fast-moving object coming in-system, it's hard to know what to make of it. It's massive and moving at a significant fraction of the speed of light.

But the ship has other problems. Their systems are old and failing. The family is getting too big. There are claim-jumping corporates bringing Asteroid Belt tactics to the Kuiper Belt. Worrying about a distant object that might or might not be an alien ship seems…not important.

They're wrong. It's the most important thing that has happened to the human race in a million years. This is humanity's first contact with an alien race. The First Formic War is about to begin.
Earth Unaware is the first novel in The First Formic War series by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston.

About the Author

ORSON SCOTT CARD is best known for his science fiction novel Ender's Game and it's many sequels that expand the Ender Universe into the far future and the near past. Those books are organized into the Ender Quintet, the five books that chronicle the life of Ender Wiggin; the Shadow Series, that follows on the novel Ender's Shadow and are set on Earth; and the Formic Wars series, written with co-author Aaron Johnston, that tells of the terrible first contact between humans and the alien "Buggers". Card has been a working writer since the 1970s. Beginning with dozens of plays and musical comedies produced in the 1960s and 70s, Card's first published fiction appeared in 1977 -- the short story "Gert Fram" in the July issue of The Ensign, and the novelet version of "Ender's Game" in the August issue of Analog.

Just sort of seems like OSC phoned this one in, here and there you get some good writing but mostly it struck me as cheap. Some of the sections mention network security were just stupid, "...they have the best firewalls, but we hacked them in seconds while in free fall during a parachute jump using a eye blinking interface." wtf? The depictions of scientists and engineers were so far off the mark as to make me put the book down and shake my head (I am an engineer). We are not two dimensional and can deal with more than black&white problems also many of us can interact with people professionally and even effectively manage them. In many places OSC tries to insert some Newtonian physics but this universally fails and reveals that he really does not have a clue, speed and acceleration are different things. I could go on but you get the point.

I know this review does not really matter and anyone who has read the other books will read this one too as you should, just keep your expectations low. Or maybe read this one in graphic novel form.

Really?
By Paul M. Calkins
I am so very disappointed... I can't believe Card even read this book, let alone wrote it.

The story is moderately interesting, and the characters are enough to keep you going. However the book displays complete ignorance of the most basic points about physics, gravity, and space flight. (spoilers ahead)

What the heck does it mean to come to a "full stop" in space?
How does it matter how fast you're going when you dock, as long as you're matching velocity?
How can you travel from the Kuiper belt to the Moon in 8 months? At the stated velocity (100,000 mph) it's a 5 year trip. Don't you have Google?
So many many others..

By the way, if you're the mindless appendage of a multi-body organism, why do you snarl in hatred? Do our fingers have expressions? And oh yes, how does a human know that expression is hate?

I am a huge fan of Card's work, but come on, this time nobody even tried. It's OK to stretch the boundaries of science when you write science fiction, but you need to at least consider the actual facts too.

Lastly, Card's work is lyrical and a beautiful read, full of social commentary. This is just a rather poorly written space opera, not much different than the "Bug Eyed Monster" genre of the 1940's. I can't believe Card wrote this; I suspect Mr. Johnson spent most of the time at the keyboard. But Card should have exerted a little editorial control. His name's on the book, and that should be a promise to the reader. Promise not kept!

Written for a comic book series
By Smoky Blue
Ender's Game is still one of my top 5 books of all time. While I didn't like the followup novels as much, I could still appreciate how well they were written, even if they didn't appeal as much to my reading tastes. Earth Unaware, however, is complete drivel. I have no idea what Card was thinking when he released this, but I should have recognized the warning sign when I saw that it was co-authored. It's not even really a novel, but rather a series of short stories that loosely tie together with a couple of utterly pointless cameo appearances by characters which will play a role later in the Formic wars.

Sadly, it all starts to make sense when you read the Afterward in the book -- this was never originally intended to be a novel. It was backstory that Card created for Ender's Game. Back in 2009 Marvel Comics made several successful runs of comics based on Ender's Game and the Ender universe. This travesty of a novel is the result of Marvel wanting to do a new series with new characters, but still set in the Ender universe. It was created specifically to flesh out the story so Marvel can create a comic book series.

The book is great, the description in the ad isn't! It states" Series " but it really only 1 book. It needs to be more clear. I was expecting 5 books and received only 1. Now I have to go back and look for the rest of the series.

If you're looking for a scholarly translation, look elsewhere...
By Sonbu
I know this translation is not very popular or spoken about much anymore, but just in case there are still a few inquiring people, I thought it would be important to give fair warning. Keep in mind that I read and teach Hebrew and have spent a considerable amount of time discussing Aramaic primacy with several scholars, so this is not new or foreign territory for me.

First, this is a patchwork of a translation based on so many sources that you are reading something that has never before existed prior to this publication, nor are the consulted sources even translated correctly at times. There is no single manuscript that will read like the books of Trimm's New Testament (or Tanakh), therefore you are reading the New testament according to James Trimm and not according to the manuscript record. While critical editions have their value, you are trusting only one man who in the majority of cases goes against most (if not all) other scholars.

We have several issues here to discuss.
1) Use of the DuTillet Hebrew Matthew (edited as he sees fit).

2) Use of the "Old Syriac" Gospels (molded into a Pesh'tta base because we only have fragments of it).

3) Plagiarized Peshitta base from the Way's Aramaic English Interlinear NT.

4) The actual background and credentials of who you're trusting to deliver to you the Word of our Elohim and Good News of our Mashiach
The DuTillet Hebrew Matthew, as well as the Munster and Shem Tob are easily proven to be revisions from a Greek manuscript and not in anyway original. There are no other manuscripts that line up with their unique and blatantly dubious readings, and all of these manuscripts are AT LEAST 1000 years older than our oldest Aramaic and Greek manuscripts. Further, we have no single recording or quote from any church founder for readings supported in the Hebrew Matthews. Origin, Jerome, and Eusebius had access to the Nazarene writings, including the "Gospel according to the Hebrews" and, in listing variations from their texts, not once do they mention any reading of which you find in Shem Tob, DuTillet or Munster. If you're wondering about word plays, the only reason you have Hebrew word plays is because in the Greek NT you have either a recording or translation of Aramaic speech which would have had these same word plays in them already. But if you are an Aramaic primacist, you know that there were mistranslations from Aramaic into Greek and it is these mistranslations which also exist in these Hebrew Matthew's. So any translator (or in this case, editor) who is trusting these manuscripts as a valid source of textual readings should be a huge red flag from the perspective of honest scholarship.

Second, the Old Syriac; sometimes called the "Old Scratch" because some of it's copies were scratched off and written over; in other words, it was not treated as Sacred Writings. The Old Syriac does not old any weight over the Peshitta and this has been proven many times from every scholar in the Aramaic community. to see this for yourself, please read the links that I will leave in the comments section.

Out of those who hold to Aramaic primacy, only one scholar (Joe Veil) takes the Old Syriac into account for a textual critical approach to the Scriptures. This does not mean however that he thinks it is original, he only views it as another ancient witness to use in creating a critical text rather than relying solely on the Peshitta (whether that be the eastern or western Peshitta).

Third, Trimm plagiarized the Way's Aramaic interlinear because he has little knowledge of the languages himself and so needed to use someone else's work. This plagiarism has been proven without a shadow of a doubt many times, and the best compilation can be found on Leb Tahor's website if you are interested (you can do a google search or I will put the link in the comments section). The matter was actually taken to court, and although The Way didn't want to take it to trial (think of all the time and money) the defense presented by Trimm is basically a rehash of his introduction which in many cases is simply a copy of the common arguments you see Paul Younan, George Lamsa, Andrew Roth and several others put forward. Therefore, his defense in many ways is also not original and simply a re-hash of what other scholars teach. This dishonesty is so disheartening and does not bode well for the Nazarene movement at all. I feel uncomfortable saying such on a public forum, but the proper manner for addressing it according to Torah has been done many times in the past and there is no choice but to speak openly. So, after copying, Trimm then edited the text as he saw fit for his own ideas. Both the Way's interlinear and Trimm's edit contain a doctrinal bias that would take too long to dissect and correct though. So even if you are a student of the original languages you would be better off investing in something else altogether unless Trimm had included the actual original texts on the opposing page so you could practice your language skills and translate for yourself.

Finally, it may be wise to investigate the background, credentials, and behaviour of who you are trusting to deliver the Word of Elohim to you. This is not relevant to the product however so I will leave that to you.

As far as the Tanakh goes, it is a lightly edited version of the JPS 1917 from the public domain. Some of the archaic language has been updated, but not all of it. Some awkward sentence structuring and such remains. All names have been transliterated into their Hebrew equivalents, but the shewa-holem (e-o) in some names has been altered to a qamats-shureq (a-u) without any valid reasoning. There is some dubious theory circulating about the vowels in names that has never been proven nor taught by any scholar who actually knows the languages with sufficient proficiency. Vocal shewa's are also transliterated with an ' instead of an e. Tanakh is also spelt Tanak, even though the final letter is a soft pronunciation of the word (in other words, it should be Tanakh / Tanach). Other poor scholarship is the claim that Y-H-W-H in the Masoretic text had the vowels for Eloah inserted into it. Although this may seem so in English, if you can actually read Hebrew, you would clearly notice that they are not. Eloah carries the vowels composite segol-holem-patach, where as the Divine Name (as writtein in Trimm's introduction) carries the vowels shewa-holam-qamats. I hate to say it, but if Trimm were not a pseudo-scholar he would know this. Trimm also promises extensive textual criticism in the Tanakh when there is actually very little provided. You have a little over 200 notes in the Tanakh with over 134 of them being references to the possibility of the Masorites having changed Y-H-W-H to Adonai. So you are left with very little additional insight into the manuscript record. You would be better off getting the DSS Bible which has tons, or learning the languages yourselves and picking up a BHS.

The book itself is big, bulky, and awkward. The print is not always good and it is single column verse format which is not enjoyable to read nor aesthetically pleasing.

So, in conclusion, if you are looking for a scholarly translation of the Aramaic with textual notes, I would recommend anything but this volume. Janet Magiera has a translation available that has almost no bias and is something I am confident telling you that you can trust (this is based on my own translation work). Her regular volume contains many textual variants which will make up for what you would miss in this volume. She has also even released a Messianic Version so you can read the Semitic forms of people and places. But if you are looking for a Nazarene/Netzari/Natsari bible, then Andrew Gabriel Roth's has produced a much better version which should suit your purposes far better than this volume. Not only did he do a much better job, he has a much higher working knowledge of the languages, is a lot more honest, and has included A LOT of Nazarene commentary that one seeking this kind of a bible would appreciate (it is a theological gold mine for Netzarim).

I hope that anyone investigating these different bibles has found this review helpful and edifying.

James Trimm's version of the Bible
By Mari Silver
Having read this version of the Bible from cover to cover, I find a few remarkable observations.
1. Most of it is word for word KJV except where he has substituted the Name appropriately.
2. It contains many typos and archaic words which do not facilitate either flow or comprehension.
3. Alternate sources are cited as long as they do not seriously disagree with Mr Trimm's personal interpretation of the passage.

The seventh edition of Basic Biomechanics has been significantly updated from the previous edition. The approach taken remains an integrated balance of qualitative and quantitative examples, applications, and problems designed to illustrate the principles discussed. The seventh edition also retains the important sensitivity to the fact that some beginning students of biomechanics possess weak backgrounds in mathematics. For this reason, it includes numerous sample problems and applications, along with practical advice on approaching quantitative problems.

With balanced, integrated coverage of applied anatomy, mechanical principles, and relevant sport and daily living applications, this text introduces you to the basics of biomechanics. The quantitative aspects of biomechanics are presented in a manageable, progressive fashion, with practical advice on approaching both qualitative and quantitative problems in biomechanics.

The Teenage Brain: A Neuroscientist's Survival Guide to Raising Adolescents and Young Adults, by Frances E. Jensen, Amy Ellis Nutt

An internationally respected neurologist offers a revolutionary look at the brains of adolescents, providing surprising insights - including why smart kids often do stupid things - and practical advice for adults and teens.

In this groundbreaking, accessible book, Dr. Frances E. Jensen - a mother, teacher, researcher, and internationally known expert in neurology - introduces us to the mystery and magic of the teen brain. One of the first books to focus exclusively on the neurological development of adolescents, The Teenage Brain presents new findings, dispels widespread myths, and provides practical suggestions for negotiating this difficult and dynamic life stage for both adults and adolescents.

Interweaving easy-to-follow scientific data with anecdotes drawn from her experiences as a parent, clinician, and public speaker, Dr. Jensen explores adolescent brain functioning and development, including learning and memory, and investigates the impact of influences such as drugs, multitasking, sleep, and stress. The Teenage Brain reveals how:

-Adolescents may not be as resilient to the effects of drugs as we previously thought. Occasional use of marijuana has been shown to cause lingering memory problems, and long-term use can affect later adulthood IQ.

-Multitasking causes divided attention and can reduce learning ability.

-Emotionally stressful situations in adolescence can have permanent effects on mental health and may lead to higher risk for certain neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression.

Rigorous yet accessible, warm yet direct, The Teenage Brain sheds new light on young adults and provides practical suggestions for how parents, schools, and even the legal system can better help them during this crucial period.

''Marvelous . . . Dr. Jensen uses her considerable expertise as a neuroscientist and a mother to explain the recent explosion of adolescent brain research and how this research can help us better understand and help young people.'' --Carol A. Ford, MD, president, Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine; professor of pediatrics, University of Pennsylvania; and chief, Division of Adolescent Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

''Frances Jensen has brilliantly translated academic science and clinical studies . . . A 'must read' for parents, teachers, school nurses, and many others who live with or interact with teens.'' --S. Jean Emans, MD, chief, Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine, Boston Children's Hospital; professor of pediatrics, Harvard Medical School

From the Back Cover

For many years, scientists believed that the adolescent brain was essentially an adult one. Over the last decade, however, neurology and neuroscience have revealed that the teen years encompass vitally important stages of brain development.

Interweaving clear summary and analysis of research data with anecdotes drawn from her years as a clinician, researcher, and public speaker, renowned neurologist Frances E. Jensen, MD, explores adolescent brain functioning and development in the context of learning and multitasking, stress and memory, sleep, addiction, and decision making.

The Teenage Brain explains how these eye-opening findings not only dispel commonly held myths about teens but also yield practical suggestions for adults and teenagers negotiating the mysterious and magical world of adolescent biology.

“It’s charming to see good science translate directly into good parenting.”—New York Times Book Review

“This well-written, accessible work...offers support and a way for parents to understand and relate to their own soon-to-be-adult offspring.”—Publishers Weekly

Good but could be better
By Dienne
I was a little leery of this book from the opening pages. Dr. Jensen opens with a horror story - her teenage son came home with his hair dyed black. She just couldn't imagine how such a level-headed kid could do such a thing. And, worse, he wanted to get red streaks as well. So her solution was to spend a fortune taking him to her "color guy" to get it done right. I guess Dr. Jensen and I have different ideas on parenting. I made a vow early on never to sweat the small stuff, and I consider hair color well within that category - if that's the worst my kids do in their teenage years, I will count my blessings. Furthermore, if they're going to experiment with hair color, they can take responsibility and accept the consequences themselves. Green hair is not fatal.

But maybe the information on the teenage brain is better, and we can just agree to disagree about parenting. Dr. Jensen clearly knows her stuff as far as brain development, anatomy, physiology and chemistry go, but I found her information a bit weak, disorganized and failing to thoroughly connect the dots, and I found many of her illustrative stories distracting and a bit alarmist.

Dr. Jensen starts with an overview of brain structures relevant for cognitive and emotional functioning, including, among others, the brain stem, the amygdala, the hippocampus and the cerebral cortex, especially the frontal lobes. She shows how brain development is a process of both "pruning", in which excess neurons are selectively cut back based on environmental stimulation or lack thereof and "myelination" in which the neurons are coated with a fatty sheath with helps to send signals faster along neuronal pathways. The pruning allows for specialization of function within brain regions and allows neurons with to "fire" and "wire" together creating associations to learn new information and hone new skills. Myelination allows different brain regions to be more connected and integrated.

These developmental processes start from the back, more primitive parts of the brain and work forward toward the more advanced "executive" parts of the brain. The amygdala, for instance, is one of the most primitive parts of the brain which allows for recognition of and response to threats and stress. It is highly reactive to emotion, but until the frontal lobes are better developed and integrated, the child/teenager has little ability to process and manage that emotion and control impulses.

The processes of pruning and myelination are part of brain "plasticity", meaning that the brain has great potential to change. For a long time it has been thought that this period of great plasticity was limited to early childhood (up to about age five), which is why early childhood enrichment and learning have been considered so important. But science is now showing us that adolescence (beginning in the early teen years and continuing through young adulthood, approximately the early twenties) is another period of great plasticity. Which means that teens are capable of learning and changing nearly as much as young children. This means that adolescence is an exciting time of opportunity, growth and development. But it also means that the perils of the teen years are even more intense because negative experiences during these years are more likely to be encoded in the brain and lead to life-long emotional, relational, legal and general health problems.

Dr. Jensen spends a chapter discussing what this means for teens' ability to learn and the importance of sleep (along with a discussion about teens' diurnal cycles, indicating that teens' tend to be sleep deprived because they are biologically programmed to go to sleep and wake up later than adults, but are nonetheless required to function on adults' schedules and how this is potentially harmful for teen brain development). She then spends a chapter discussing risk-taking behavior in teens and how the reward centers in teens' brains are wired to respond much more excitedly to potential rewards (including and especially peer approval) than adults' brains - to the point that teens have difficulty evaluating risks if the pull of the reward is too strong.

Next Dr. Jensen spends a chapter each discussing potential harmful influences and obstacles frequently encountered in the teen years, including tobacco, alcohol, pot, stress, mental illness, digital overload and concussions, along with how those factors can affect teens' brains and why teens are so much more susceptible to their influence. I do have an issue with her chapter on stress because she seems to be saying that teens are under a lot more stress than adults. I think it's more that teens have fewer and less developed coping mechanisms than adults, so the stress they have seems greater ("drama"). But I'd say it's absurd to suggest that someone who has a home and food to eat is under more stress than the parents who are working to provide that home and food.

Finally Dr. Jensen wraps up with a look beyond adolescence into young adulthood and how continuing brain plasticity offers unique opportunities, yet continuing perils, for young people. She provides some advice on how to help the burgeoning adult in your life make a successful transition, which is pretty much just a developmental continuation of her advice for structuring your teens' life for maximal likelihood of success. Basically it boils down to don't be afraid to be involved in your child's life. Although the quality and intensity differ as children age, children continue to need supervision and guidance well into adulthood.

There is certainly a lot of good information in this book, but it's just not presented as effectively as it could be. Dr. Jensen is trying hard to present precise scientific information in generally understandable layman's terms, but she doesn't get either quite right. She is trying hard to be both scientific and folksy, but some of her jargon is not adequately explained (especially when a previously discussed brain structure or function comes up again in later chapters) and sometimes her folksy tone makes it difficult to accept her scientific viewpoint.

In addition, a lot of her presentation of studies relies on correlational studies without addressing the issue of causation. For instance, she'll talk about brain abnormalities found in teens who smoke, drink or use illegal drugs with the implication that the drugs caused the abnormality. But there also needs to be a discussion of the possibility that brain abnormalities may be likely to lead teens to such behavior - perhaps they are more prone to risk-taking or more responsive to rewards, or perhaps they are "self-medicating" to deal with the effects of their abnormalities.

Finally, Dr. Jensen seems to believe that teens need to be beaten over the head with alarmist messages about the dangers of the world. I agree that repetition is helpful for learning, but generally speaking, lack of information is not why kids get into the problems they do. Every kid by now knows that smoking causes lung cancer and that driving under the influence greatly increases the chance of serious collision. The problem, however, is that teens think that they are invincible. It can help to show them situations involving kids their own age, but such situations can also be traumatizing and paradoxically increase the likelihood of the behavior. Seeing a mangled car that was involved in a DUI accident, for instance, can lead to a variety of emotional responses including excitation. There are no easy answers, of course, but keeping the lines of communication open is vital. Beating kids over the head too much can lead them to tune out and shut down.

There have been a spate of books lately on brain development and what it means for raising children and adolescents. In my view, this is one of the weaker of those books. For a better view of the brain science side of the equation I recommend Laurence Steinberg's AGE OF OPPORTUNITY (although I part company with him too on a lot of his applications of what we've learned about teenage brain development). And although it's aimed more at parents of younger kids rather than teenagers, for the child-rearing angle I recommend Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson's NO DRAMA DISCIPLINE. The important take-away of that book is how children's and teen's brains are wired to respond to perceived stress and threats, including that posed by how we as parents interact with our kids when we get angry and punitive. And for a very thorough look at how stress affects all human systems, including the brain, I recommend Robert Zapolsky's WHY ZEBRAS DON'T GET ULCERS. The more we learn about brain development and functioning over the life course, the more we seem to realize that stress is one of the prime determinants in whether people thrive or fail. As parents, including parents of teens, the best gifts we can give our children are a safe and secure environment and the tools to manage and rebound from stress and trauma when they do occur.

A Neuronal Guide to Understanding your Teen
By Alicia B. Taylor
Excellent book that offers impactful information on both the psychology and physiology of the teen brain. It's easy enough to read for those without a medical background and offers plenty of science to engage those with a neuroscience background. Quick read. A soon as I'm finished reading, I'm passing it on to my almost 15 year old daughter in hopes that she'll recognize herself in the examples and maybe think twice as she encounters tricky teen situations over the next several years.

This is an illuminating and easy to follow read for both the scholar and layperson.
By Kristi Myers
This is an illuminating and easy to follow read for both the scholar and layperson. I used it in my Lifespan Development graduate psychology course because it makes brain development and anatomy easy to understand. As a mom to a 14 year-old, this book makes a lot of practical sense, too. Well written and pleasant to read, I really can't put it down.
